im not addicted. I just want one of every interesting lens, that  i can lay my hands on 😇

google is no longer my friend. Accidently found a nikon lens that flares with lots of little circles. i will say that i am somewhat enamored with lens flares.  Its price is quite realistic, cheaper that the last couple of lenses i have bought anyway. So it will most likely get added to the collection. In the meantime i'm sposed to be saving for  btm's miraculous p4k lens controller thingy but lenses keep getting in the way. 🙄

Well, I'd be careful is they're using that image as the selling point. It looked familiar to me and that's because it has been around a while. Vintage lenses for Video uses it for one of their early (and very good) posts. You can find it here. https://www.vintagelensesforvideo.com/4-lenses-with-amazing-lens-flare/

  2. Is it just me? But I can't seem to find my copy. I bought Andrew's guide to vintage lenses quite a few years back. In my opinion it was the best guide in this space that I'd seen. Is it not for sale anymore? Or am I just not looking in the right place? In any case, it should be on sale, and an updated version would be well received! Or are we all over vintage lenses?

  3. See, I knew this would happen. About a month ago I bought an Osmo Pocket, which I'm really happy with, but now this comes along. I obviously wasn't paying attention to the rumour sites. Sigh ... I'll just stick with my first generation purchase.

Yeah that's what I'm seeing too. Personally, I'd go with the GH3 over the G6. But I never found Panasonic's focus peaking to be all that great anyway, so it doesn't really matter if the GH3 has it or not.

    On a side note...

    Begin rant...

There was something special about these cameras and what people were using them for. Today, everything is about corporate videos, or content creation for YouTube or IG, back then it was about guys or gals with a camera and what they could shoot with them. People were pushing the boundaries with what the cameras had. Today, it's complaining about what the cameras don't have.

Don't get me wrong, I'm just as guilty of it. But I miss the days when I was so excited to go and shoot with my eos-m or couldn't wait to see the release videos from the GH3.

I've been wanting a second camera for casual shooting for a while. I bought a BMMCC in the summer because I always regretted selling the first one I had. I paid $400 for it and $100 for the Ikan VL35 monitor. The problem with it is it isn't really good for casual shooting but for the price, it has the technical qualities and IQ to make a superb indie film with. Yet I still bitch that it isn't handheld enough, or the crop factor is annoying. I remember having a camcorder and I didn't care what the lens' focal length was... I just moved back or stepped closer if I needed to get the shot.

And I think that's what's cool about these older cameras, whether it's the BMPCC or the BMMCC, the GH2 or the GH3, the G6 or the G7... even if it's the t2i, they all have a unique look. They're not trying to be an Alexa... even if the Pocket has been called the Baby Alexa... they were just tools for filmmakers to tell their stories.

So with all that said, I think I'm going to revisit my BMMCC and if it is too much of a hassle, then maybe I'll look for a GH3 or maybe even a G85 and shoot in B&W so I don't have to mess around with WB. The point of these cameras are to have fun with them and push the boundaries of what you can do with them... for me... sometimes that's enough.

    End rant.

Yep, I've said it elsewhere in these forums, but I love my battered GH3. I shoot with a GH5 mostly now (and a GX85), but always keep the GH3 close. And yeah, there is something really appealing about its black and white.

  5. Panasonic GH3.

More than good enough. I use a GH5 now for work, but I still can't bring myself to sell the GH3 (not that anyone would buy it). Great HD, battery life still solid, built like a tank. Paired with my Voigtlander 25mm (itself battered and scratched to shit) it has a special voodoo.

  6. corporate / education / some narrative

My dream is to keep it all in one backpack. (It never works out that way, but I see no reason why it shouldn't)

    So ...

    (gear I have)

    GH5, Voigtlander 25mm, Lumix 15mm, Lumix Nocticron 42.5.

Zoom F4, rode NTG 3 (and cable and pole stuff)

    Any small, semi-decent tripod.

It is interesting just how little this has changed since 2017 over two years ago. (could the same be said if I was giving an overview of cameras? Well the GH5 / a7Smk2 / FS7 / & others would still be there and going strong, but we'd see many more changes all in all!)

I'd mention the Tascam DR-05X alongside the Zoom H1 (which is now a Zoom H1n), nothing radical here though in their updates.

A quick mention for the Marantz PMD-706 (an alternative to the Tascam DR70D?? Dunno, too few reviews out on the Marantz PMD-706).

F8n/F6 of course get a mention. (The F8n and F8 having become even better than they were two years ago! Keeping their crown as the best sub $1K recorder. The F4/F8n still is a better choice for the aspiring PSM than the F6 is. However the F6 could be tempting for the solo shooter who does everything in house)

The MixPre10T would get a mention. (it is in a tough spot when it comes to pricing, is a lot more expensive than a Zoom F8n, get high enough up in price a person might just ask themselves why not go the whole hog and get a 633??)

The big BIG announcements in the last couple of years are the Sound Devices Scorpio and Zaxcom Nova, these are groundbreaking / game changing / buzzwording recorders! (Zaxcom Deva 24 is perhaps worth a mention too, which had already been pre-announced back when I first posted this thread, but didn't start shipping until a while later. Maybe also mention the Aaton Cantar Mini as well while we're about it? Was also announced around about this time, but I think wasn't shipping quite yet back then) However all four of these recorders are well outside the scope of 99% of the readers in this forum. (although I dream to own one of them one day! I have however got a Zaxcom Maxx / Zoom F8n / Zoom F4 / Tascam DR680 / Sound Devices 552, purchased in that order. Plus a couple of handheld recorders too)

Yes, my new F4 arrived today. I know it's been out a while but it still feels like a good option. For years now I've been using a Tascam DR60D. The damn thing has been worked to death and it has never let me down. I do feel a bit guilty upgrading. But still the F4 is like a Porshe coming out of the box compared to the Tascam.  In any case, I always feel happier investing in sound gear for some reason.

  8. Yep, like Mattias said, dog lovers and dogs rescuers. Research them. Send all the CEO's of those organisations a press release/free screener. Get them involved. You're in a niche area, so use that to your advantage.

    I don't mind your trailer.

These guys did a great job in a (not so now) niche area.

    That MUST be satire

    Or about two decades old!

(edit: wellllllllll... this was uploaded over a decade ago, I guess just perhaps this makes it "a little" better)

No matter how old ... genius.

I know the dynamic range is bad, and the green screen awful. Hell, the framing is all over the shop. But for me, the most disturbing thing is that witch in the background. That's seriously freaky shit.

  10. Just came across this post from Hal Hartley on Instagram. He's updating a bunch of his old films, including Surviving Desire. He included a screen shot of updating the colour of Surviving Desire on DaVinci Resolve. Of course, we know filmmakers all over the world use this stuff. Still, it's cool. And if you haven't seen any of Hartley's films, do yourself a favour.

BTW I got the gx85 in the end, the ibis is really amazing, with an adapted 50mm (so 100mm equiv) I can achieve some amazing steady shots, the body itself seems to be built much better than the g7 and with a pancake lens the camera is almost pocketable. The only downloadside is the missing jack input but I can charge the battery using my phone power bank, that's really useful!

Good choice. It's a great camera (as are all the cameras discussed in this thread). Just don't drop the bloody thing! That screen on the back is so exposed. Mine has a big crack across it. Totally my fault, but it still works. So all good.

  12. That’s a tough question. IBIS and 4K on the GX85 are nice, but really when it comes to image quality there’s not a lot in it. For me the GH3 feels good in the hand. The buttons makes sense where they are. Battery lasts forever. I take both on every shoot, but if I had to take only one, it would be the GH3. I just know it won’t let me down. If you can pick up a GH3 for a couple of hundred bucks, you’ll really have nothing to regret.

  13. I keep going to upgrade my GH3, but never do. It has been dropped, dragged along the footpath, rained on. Rubbery bits have fallen off and I’ve gaffer taped them back on, and still the damn thing keeps working for me. In terms of income vs camera cost ratio, I can’t complain. The thing is bullet proof. I’ve  been looking at all the new releases, but 2nd hand GH3s are so cheap... 1080p is all I need, and that thing paired with my voigtlander 25mm is just heaven.

I also have a GX85. Yeah, it’s okay, but I just know it won’t be around as long as the GH3.

It's 2nd hand. And according the rating, not a very good one at that:

So, you snagged a superfair price still, considering you're paying only a small premium over the 2nd hand one but getting a brand spanking new one free of issues.

It’s a bizarre little lens. Cheap any way you look at it. I’ve been using it on the GX85, makes the whole combo tiny. And I like the image I get. Not fast, but at f4 it’s not for low light stuff anyway. There seems to be no decent review out there that I can find, not from the usual suspects anyway. Which is a shame, because for a low budget kit this lens seems a no brainer.

Yeah crazy cheap for it. Sigh. If I had a use for it I would have bought it, but I have other needs as they say.

Bugger. I just grabbed it for $129. What the hell is wrong with this lens? I like it so far. Maybe they’re running them out. But at that price ... come on Voightlander I want a 42.5 for $200.

Yup, the only time I've had a sizeable order just disappear ? 2nd time lucky this time I hope! At the very least it should be a great lens to vlog with my BMPCC

Mine arrived. Hope yours did too. Only shot a few seconds with it so far (on a gx85) but I like the couple of clips I got. For the price I reckon it’s a bargain.
