Stab got a reaction from jonpais in Panasonic GH5 - all is revealed!
My first couple of tests with the GH5 show that Natural is the best picture profile, as it was on the GH3 also. When everything turned down -3 or -4 (contrast / saturation), there isn't much difference with it's close contender Cinelike D. Mind you, Cinelike D is flatter but also some color tonalities are lost. Especially in the greens.
Cinelike D might show a small improvement in DR, but never more than a (0.5) stop. With Filmconvert applied with it's standard curve, the difference in dynamic range is lost and Natural wins with better colors. Some grass for instance has a yellow tinge to it in real life and on Natural, which just becomes a single colored green on Cinelike D.

So for me it will be Natural as the way to go. Like709 has the best colors out of the box, but not the best DR without tweaking every shot which I'm not going to do when shooting weddings. I didn't get the V-LOG update though so I can't comment on that.
Forget about Portrait, Standard, Vivid, etc. I see no reason to shoot in those profiles as they don't offer any more 'natural' color over Natural and no improvement in DR or gradeabillity whatsoever.
Then the stabilizer. I'm using a Sigma 18-35 with a SpeedBooster XL, so not supported by the camera. I have to manually input the focal length and naturally I can not make us of Dual IS. My findings are that it works fine for handheld shots which are pretty steady or make a small movement or pan. However, I tried to walk with it on and it mostly gave pretty poor results. Similar to warp stabilizer, it was warping all over the place on the side of my screen. Don't expect miracles if you don't have native lenses is my take on it. Oh yea, and it DRAINS your battery. With the GH3 I could go for hours on a single battery. Today I almost went through a full charge in like 90 minutes.
What else? The 4K at 50p is astounding. The image is chrystal clear without being oversharpened. It's not lacking DR unless you start pushing it with very contrasty situations. The VFR is very fun to play with. 120-180 fps is astounding. It's as sharp as a GH3 / GH4 at 1080p, but more prone to moire and aliassing. You have to make sure you have the background (bricks, buildings, trees) out of focus and then you're good to go. Instant production-value.
The camera feels sturdy and professional. The full-sized HDMI is the finishing touch. Recording simultaneously to dual SD cards is a blessing, especially when shooting important events like weddings. No more nervously taking the SD-card out of the camera and put in my computer with shaking hands praying to God that the footage is okay and the card is undamaged.
    Cons I've seen so far:
    - Incorrect exposure when having VFR selected in combination with shutter-angle. You aren't shown the correct exposure of the shot until you press the record button. This needs to be adressed.
    - Not as impressed with IBIS as I had hoped for.
    - Battery life decreased. Probably due to Stabilizer and or dual card recording
    - Image needs heavy grading to be 'filmic'. But this is the same for all Panasonic camera's and I've learned to deal with it
Great step-up from the GH3 which I've used for 4 years with great pleasure. If the GH5 proves to be as reliable as the GH3, I'm a very happy customer.
Here's the one of the first films I've shot with the GH3. I'm still surprised with what that little camera can do. If you don't have the money, you don't need a GH5 or an upgrade. But if you do, it's great fun and you feel like the future is here.

Stab, yes, you're largely correct. When you see the hand (sounds scary ;)), that is the IBIS, sensor-based system. If you couple that with a Panasonic OIS lens that is equipped to work with IBIS, then you get the IBIS2 and "DUAL 2" shows up in your VF/LCD. DUAL 2 is simply IBIS2...not sure why they don't call it that.
Now adding e-stabilization is an additional electronic (not sensor-based stabilization) that lays over the IBIS. That's where the sensor cropping occurs. You'll have to see if the cropping vs the additional stabilization is worth it. At least as it's implemented in the G85, I don't see much of a difference with E-stabilization. The good thing is there's no IQ deterioration with it engaged.

At several differnt location I have been told by people who had the prototype cameras that Like709 was the way to go unless I was recording to an external recorder, then V Log L.
Question, Slashcam.de has shown that VLog on the GH5 is truncated so has only half the expeted bits depth . Like709 is not supposed to be truncated. Is the external VLog feed truncated?

The colours are different and possibly more pleasing than the other profiles. The "knee" is adjustable (highlight rolloff) so there's the potential for retaining more dynamic range than the standard profiles. Plus you get to use all of the 1024 bits, whereas V-Log is truncated.
But, to date, nobody has shown comparisons extensive enough to draw any solid conclusions on colour and dynamic range. There is a handful of tantalising vids on YouTube that merely hint at its potential.

I don't have the camera so I am not sure what the Anti-shake stabilization actually reflects, but my guess would be the IBIS in which case the answer would be yes.
Any stabilization (lens based, sensor based or electronic) should require the focal length information whether that is manually or automatically registered.
The crop with electronic stabilization should not depend on the focal length. It usually is a standard % of the image that corresponds to the range of corrections that are possible.
Electronic stabilization can indeed give you warping artifacts. It is generally avoided unless you really (really) need it. It can work great though if the shot is relatively static and in turn when the necessary motion correction range very small. But with that said, some NLEs offer similar stabilization that could perform just as well even though they don't have information about the focal length or the acceleration of the camera, but just extract the motion information from the video itself.
Yes you should enter the corrected focal length (11.5mm). Thats all the information that the camera needs in order to translate the acceleration information into sensor shifts. Relevant points: 1.Sensor size has no role in this so the correction would be the same whether the sensor is 4/3s or 35mm 2.Smart adaptors with electronic lenses should automatically transmit the focal length in which case you either wouldn't be able to enter it or it would n't be taken into account.

Ok, I bit the bullet and went for this one:
    https://nl.aliexpress.com/item/Seetec-F7-7-Inch-Utra-Slim-IPS-Full-HD-1920x1200-4K-HDMI-On-camera-Video-Field/32776738097.html
After checking out the Feelworld FW-760, I discovered that there is a 'new' monitor from Feelworld, the F7. It has the exact same specs and I expect the exact same panel, just a more modern housing. Then I realised that Feelworld is a sub-brand of Seetec, which is the brand my current monitor is from.
Googeling further, I found out that the F7 monitor is availble with both Feelworld and Seetec branding. Same difference.
Went with the Seetec because it was a tad cheaper to send to my country.

It should arrive in like 2 weeks so I will let you know once I've messed around with it. I expect it to be similar to the FW-760, just with a more modern look. Someone also said on YouTube that this F7 is the same monitor as the Cinemartin Loyal LT and just a rebrand. Probably true but that's not confirmed.
Thanks for the help everyone. Happy shooting.

At that price point it is almost guaranteed that it is a rebranded Chinese monitor. I've read people commenting it is a rebranded Feelworld / Seetec F7. Not sure though.
From the other hand, almost all companies have their production in China, Taiwan or Korea. So what is the actual difference between 'well known' companies and Chinese ones? It's everything, but the product itself.

The G7 does not carry a signal through HDMI when recording. In other words, you can't use an external monitor with a G7.
Now, shooting a Feature Film on a 3 inch LCD screen does not really seem to be a great idea in my opinion. Image quality is great though.

    Hey everyone,
I'm very stoked about the GH5 and will shoot a lot in 4k 50 fps!
The question is, which external monitor will accept this signal as input? I'm using a cheap Seetec monitor at the moment with the GH3, but I don't think it is able to handle a 4k 50 fps feed.
I've seen some affordable newer monitors which accept a 4K signal, but only 30 fps at most.
Anyone knows anyhing about this? Or could recommend some fairly priced monitors?

    I have both camera's. I shoot mainly weddings and I own a GH3, a G6 and a G7. My collegue uses the GH4.
Which camera is 'better'? Well, in terms of IQ the G7 has the edge simply because of the 4k mode. In 1080p mode, they are (all) pretty similar though. Maybe a slight edge to the G7 in low light being a bit less noisy at ISO 1600 and above. Nothing striking. Just make sure you never have to go higher than that.
But there are many more factors which make a camera good or bad. The GH3 is still my main cam. Why?

    - Much longer battery life then G6 / G7
    - The abillity to use an EXTERNAL MONITOR (G6 / G7 cannot)
    - Body handling
    - Headphone jack (G6 / G7 do not have it)
For me, these are of the upmost important. As well as reliability. The GH3 has not let me down once since I've got it over 3 years ago. Never overheats and never fucks up. *knocks on wood
And the image actually still strikes me every time I use it. Yes, it is time for something new and maybe the GH5 will be it. But until then, this is my A-cam.
Here is an example of what it can do

    Alright, did some tests today.
    My observations so far:

    - G7 in 1080p 50fps in MP4 or AVCHD mode is 99% the same. So don't have to worry about that. Will just use AVCHD for 1080p then.
    - G7 1080p vs GH3 1080p with low ISO's is 99% the same. The GH3 has a bit more magenta in the colors and the G7 more green. Which one is 'better' I don't know. Probably the G7 is a bit more natural looking.
    - G7 vs GH3 in 1080p mode in low light and high ISO's: Starting from ISO 1600 the G7 starts to be really a lot cleaner. ISO 3200 and 6400 is unusable on the GH3 due to too much noise but the G7 is a lot cleaner. Might even be usable at 3200 and 6400!
    - G7 at 4k mode, downsampled vs GH3 at high ISO's. G7 is EVEN CLEANER at 4K mode.
    - G7 at 4k mode vs GH3 at 25p -> GH3 is smoked.
I don't see any gain in DR however. The colors are slightly different but no big deal. Slight color correction fixes either. So the big improvements are cleaner high ISO's and of course better detail and no more moiré (!) at 4K mode. Too bad I can't use an external monitor with g7 but luckily it has focus peaking. So at least I can see the focus good enough on the small screen.
I'm thinking now of shooting the wedding on the G7 as the main cam. Use 4K for 90% of the shots and downsample in post. Then use 1080p 50fps for the slowmotion shots. They look about 95% the same as the shots I'm currently making with the GH3 so I don't need to 'get used' or anything to what I'm seeing.
Computer had no problems with 4 different types of footage on the timeline so that's great as well.
I only need to find out how to make the Warp Stabilizer work on 4k clips on a 1080p timeline. It simply doesn't work. When I 'nest' the clip and apply WS it actually works, but it crops the image very weirdly and like 200%.
Anyone knows how to do that?

We all agree on the flaws of this system and how it can harm us video producers, but you know what's even a better argument? They are actually already experimenting on our business for the last 3 months. Without any notice or offering any alternative, they just implemented this shitty system.
Still the first 10 seconds of all my video's start in 360p. Still, sometimes DURING playback, the resolution changes to 360p.
Why didn't they test this system on their own shitty video's first and implemented it when it was 100% functional? Nope, they just wanted to test it in the field I guess. On my films.

If you want to make a point, stop your membership right now. It has more effect than just complaining. Believe me, I tried.

5D Mk II or III with a 50mm lens. Or a 7D / 60d / one of the rebels, they all have similar IQ anyway.

Smallish sensor look (of wide-angle lens stopped down a lot) and a lot of greens (if not colorgraded too much like this on purpose)
    Verdict: GH2 / G6
