andrgl reacted to Andrew Reid in Canon EOS R5 overheated in my fridge! After just 60 JPEGs! (4 °C ambient)
Canon really threw the kitchen sink at the EOS R5 specs sheet. What about the kitchen fridge?
Canon have stated overheating time limits for HQ video recording in a warm 23 °C room.
How does the camera perform in much colder conditions?
Does the EOS R5 still overheat in the Wifi menu in a fridge?
Or do the cold temperature help cool the camera body, which Canon claims act as mitigation for hot components inside?

AFX is the long overdue focus control expansion option for our PBC system for BM Pocket4K/6K cameras.

With AFX and its included handheld remote you can control manual focus of MFT/EF lenses but also operate our newly created Single and Continuous AF modes for the camera.
These new AF-S/C modes are made possible by the AFX’s integral ToF sensor which constantly measures object distance from the camera.
As well as allowing you to control focus using the thumbstick and AF-S/C switching, the handheld remote also enables you to map any of the camera controls such as ISO/Aperture/WB etc to five of its hardware switches as well as being able to toggle Record Start/Stop from one of its two finger trigger buttons.
All communication between the AFX, the handheld controller, the PBC and the camera are performed wirelessly and, as with the PBC, the AFX runs from its own internal battery or USB.
The AFX will be priced at €199 (plus the cost of the PBC for new adopters) and pre-orders begin next month.
Here are some basic examples of the AFX in manual focus, Single and Continuous AF modes.
In AF-S mode, current focus is held until you press the trigger button so is equivalent to half shutter press/Back Focus Button on a regular (D)SLR or mirrorless.
More to follow as the pre-order date approaches.

That is great look and skintones. Super impressive. Would love to see a komodo vs e2-f6 vs mavo lf vs mavo edge vs red monstro vs etc shoot out ( when the edge comes out).
mavo edge just interests me more personally because it has more professional features like dual sdi out.

    I tried to download it.
It lets you download 8K of it but then you have to wait an hour.
Or you can continue to download 4K at a time every 10 minutes for two hours.
If you are downloading to an external drive though you can carry on downloading as much of it as you want.

I for one am really starting to feel like I have been supporting the wrong company for all of these years. This overheating issue has really opened my eyes to just how far Canon will go to maintain their product segmentation.  I was always frustrated by the little things Canon did, like put MJPEG only for 4K in my 5DIV, no dual slot recording for video, 1 card slot in the EOS R, no XLR module for any mirrorless or DSLR camera, not a single DSLR or mirrorless with unlimited recording time, clunky way to set a manual white balance, 1/200s flash sync speed, etc. But then I would see that color science and menu system and ergonomics and I would be reassured that I was still using the best system available.

But the more I look at how Panasonic stuffs every feature I keep waiting on Canon to provide into every body they build (even the "entry level" S5) and even Sony of all companies with their A7SIII (never thought I'd ever have anything good to say about a Sony camera), it is making me really rethink the ecosystem I have bought into. I don't make major changes to my gear lightly, and everything I have now just works within well known limitations; but if Canon keeps doing what its doing now I may make a decision to go all in on a new system and it would probably be Panasonic if they ever get their AF act together.

When I say that I do not care, I mean that I do not care if they put a limitation in the camera if then they remove it.
A company is here to make profit. When they "listen" like Fuji and bring you a good feature update, that's not to make you happy or because they are nice guys. Fuji CEO couldn't care less about you, as much as Canon CEO. They do bring that update because they think you are more likely to buy their camera and stay with them if they do it. They do it for your money.

Stop being blind, camera manufacturers are not charity. They want to make money, and they happen to have different strategies for doing so. Canon strategy is to cripple lower priced camera to have you buy a more expensive one. Fuji strategy is to bring you software update and pretend they listened to you. I agree that Fuji strategy is much better. Yet for my need, the R5 could be a much better tool than any Fuji or Panasonic on the market. At the end of the day is what TOOL do you need, and which company is making that tool. The tool I need today, a hybrid 50/50 photo/video FF camera with 4K60/120 and IBIS and great AF only exists with Canon appart from their soft limitation. They remove the limitation I buy it. they don't remove it I don't buy it. Nobody is walking over me, I am making a choice based on my need. If you don't buy the R5 in case they fix it despite the fact it was the tool you needed just to punish them, you actually roll over yourself.

I did something similar. I recorded 4k 24p HQ externally via the Atomos with no cards in for 35 mins or so. Then shut the camera and inserted the CfExpress card and tried to record in 4k120fps and see how much time I get. I only got 5 mins left in 4k 120!! So this tells me, using the ninja V is only good for recording 4k HQ 24 fps and after that the camera becomes useless for any high frame rate recording in 4k, let alone 8k. Got hit hard with the cripple hammer lol.

I suspected Canon to cripple this camera somehow, someway but this artificial heat limit and recovery time is really out of line. Such arrogance!
But you know what? Canon may think they control the market but we have the power to control them by boycotting Canon. Especially nowadays with the camera industry bleeding as it is. Force Canon to stop this BS. How?
If you already purchased the camera, return it. If you have it on order, cancel it. Cancel all orders with Canon. Write letters to Canon showing your disgust. Call Canon and voice your disapproval. Fight Canon with your pocketbook. Stop the BS.

@rawshooter  from your link here is co-founder Elle explaining it all. And also earlier you said db16 was really not a homebrew product but the work of some large Canadian company. Which implies that they lied and were deceptive with their kickstarter backers.
“6  cameras have shipped so far. We have more built, but they each need to be hand tested and calibrated before they ship. After the holiday it should be faster and probably 3 cameras a day. There are many factors that go into shipping that have nothing to do with whether the camera is ready, like customs forms, verifying addresses, printing up invoices, physical packing, that kind of boring stuff.
This pretty much says what the roles of everyone at the company are: http://www.digitalbolex.com/about/
Joe partnered with the executives at Ienso, a preexisting camera company, to create a new company called Cinemeridian. Cinemeridian has existed since 2011, which is when hardware development of the camera began. Joe, Mike (our CTO), and I essentially do the concept development of features both hardware and software, and Mike executes those. Joe is the CEO of the company. He is the actual boss. He works with Kish and Pomfort to design our lenses and software and to seek out new relationships with other companies who might want to make products for the camera, works with Mike and the engineering team to problem solve issues, does the hands-on thorough camera testing on the LA end, writes blog posts, answers questions on the forum, and does a lot of banal business stuff. Mike is a rockstar. What's funny about the suppositions in this thread is that Stelio is actually the least involved in day to day stuff on our project, as he manages the business side of Ienso and all the other projects they've done, and chimes in when we need more heads on an engineering problem. They are all awesome guys up in Canada and everyone in the company has put in a ridiculous amount of work.
Source of development funds is that Ienso is financially invested in the project, and Joe has put in the funds he received from selling his half of the successful business he founded years ago. He sold his half because his previous business partner did not want to branch out into developing new imaging technology, and he believed in the future of raw. He would not have put his own money, his financial future, into this thing if he didn't believe in it 100%, and that's a very brave thing to do.
Warranty is 1 year standard warranty like most consumer electronics, and will be serviced in Toronto. A few rental houses have asked if we would be interested in local US based warranty and servicing, and we'll definitely be looking into that once the first batch of cameras is out.
I think it's a great accomplishment that we've done what other big camera companies have done in a shorter time with far fewer resources. That's not to say that we're perfect, we've had many problems and delays, but that's all part of starting a business. But I hope that someone who has watched our journey and decides to try something they wouldn't have previously thought possible might learn something from where we've gone right and wrong.”
In summation, the company practices of digital bolex is pretty much an inverse of red. They aren’t a company that exists as a patent troll. They don’t bully or harass or threaten to sue their customers. They don’t threaten bloggers or filmmakers with legal action. And they most likely probably label their products country of origin honestly.

Please also ask them why they decided it was necessary in the 1DX II to put a heatpipe/heatsink in but they are doing less than the bare minimum in the R5 where the camera is marketed with professional video features, in a market segment with competition delivering reliable professional video features (S1H and A7sIII). This quote from canon themselves is damning - why did they not feel the same need they did then, instead opting to release two pages of overheating documentation and ship a crippled product with clear-as-day poorly designed hardware?

That’s because there are smart people, however mankind in general is pretty dumb, panic prone, and has a herd mentality.
i should note that I don’t claim to be one of the smart ones. I do dumb things all the time despite my best effort not to. Most of the people on this planet aren’t that different from me, whether they’re willing to publicly admit it or not.  It must be maddening for smart people, though there’s not a whole lot I can do about it.

Nope. I do however have an R5. My intended usage is shooting stills, and for that it’s one of the greatest cameras Canon has ever made. The fact that it can record any video at is a bonus.

    I differ in opinion.
If I where using it as designed, yes. The fact of the matter is that canon disclosed up front that there are recording limits. They can not anticipate every single usage scenario, so provided generic guidelines.. it’s not realistic to expect them to know how every single user is going to use their camera.
I’ll answer with a question: do you find yourself implicitly trusting every advertisement you see? I don’t and I seriously doubt that you do.

    These people you mean ?

They can get to fuck over this to be honest after dismissing this issue out of hand and instigating that Twitter pile on when @Andrew Reid raised it.
After that, any "article" they write about this should always open with  "As pointed out by EOSHD but completely ridiculed by us because it was ruining our launch bliss and for which we now unreservedly apologise..."
Maybe you just need to throw those ice cubes away and be more positive and it will go away @Andrew Reid
