It reminded me of a spot I did recently. This is the Micro w/SB, Sig 18-35mm, Hoya ProND. I think your actor may have been calling mine

Wow all three of these shots look like they came from a large sensor in Raw output! Just crazy good work with them, and BM is just amazing for what they produce output wise for the cost of these cameras.
Damn it I Need to buy another one! They are that good.

I like the 60p, but it just has a different look that I prefer and I also find the screen on the Pocket to be a real pain, especially as my eyesight gets worse in my old age. ;-) I feel like if I'm going to hook an external monitor up then I would much prefer the Micro.

Yeah, it is a pretty great compliment to it especially if you're down resing the UM to 1080 which is the case with most delivery in my world.
The 60p is a big plus but it's also the new processing that get's that much more our of the sensor - and the sensor tweaking done for the BMMCC.
With skin tones it skews a bit green compared with the Pocket - an easy tweak in post  and there's a great LUT that we use with the Micro that gives it a great starting point.
Amazing little camera that is still way beyond any DSLR/mirrorless from Sony /Panny etc. for solid HD look, DR, color and grading.
Great looking shot. What sets the BM look apart IMO. What was your lens for this?

Its not exactly easy to just look at an image and determine the stops needed (and Im not the guy qualified to answer). But yes, to my eye 13 looks more than enough. In many of the shots its even less. Its simply a very bright room.

Without a doubt. I was guilty of it. I chased the 4K image down many a rabbit holes. In the end, good 1080p Raw was all I needed. And probably all I’ll NEED for the foreseeable future.

You can't sell a smartphone these days without 4k, let alone a product with the word cinema in it costing many dollars more. As soon as smartphones starting gaining 4k capabilities 1080 became old news as far as consumer perception.
The new buzzword will be 8k soon. This is not a good trend, as most cinemas are still running 2k projectors and 4k televisions are still not widespread yet.
We don't need more resolution, we need more dynamic range, cleaner sensors, and smaller acquisition and distribution footprints. Resolution is already at the tip between quality and diminishing return, there are other factors to innovate upon.
As smartphones narrow the gap between portability, capability and quality, the markert is going to get real murky, and I question what affect this will have within the film industry. No one in their right mind is going to spend 40k when they can get what they need in a $2,000 or less package.

Well if that something you need then it is.
I almost never do post zooms. Hate them. And I can do it with HD. No one can tell.
I have yet to ever "need" 4k. Webb, TV-commercials, you name it. I could honesly use 720p and it would be fine.
Have a look at the d500 if you like Nikon and need 4K. And no, the crop isn't a big deal imo (I would almost go as far as calling it a bonus).

Man it was difficult finding some examples and these are the closest I could come across. It's crazy the amount of looks that they used this season.

Honestly, you're a better colorist than me, so you'd probably know better if it is obtainable with a GH5. I think @AaronChicago made a LUT for the GH5 emulating one of the various looks from this season of Fargo, so he'd probably know better than me. Are you thinking of taking the GH5 plunge?
Now I just like this shot and color...

I think you need to reread my post without a pair of defensive glasses on. I have not pigeon-holed anybody nor anything else that makes me look silly.

I just added a couple of thoughts to what could be a meaningful discussion about the problem all people that hang out here, including nerds like myself, face.
We risk the chance to be "home blind" and forget about the real people out there, you know the audience, the non nerds... They are at the end of the day our bosses. What they like goes.
But to answer your questions, yes they do, its starting to drift a little. But that's normal with any trend.
If we look at the last 20 years so what you call "heavy-handed grading, blurry images, harsh lighting and distracting out of focus backgrounds" have been considered "professional" looking.

That's merely because the real non nerd people haven't been able to get those looks with their own equipment. Its been unobtainable and different = professional an likable.
When they hire someone to shoot video they want something different than what they can get them self.
Before it was easy. Just use a tripod and good audio and you kicked their ass.

Today the world is different. Everyone and their cat has a tripod or stabilized lens. A large sensor and a decent mic.
So today we must once again look at what we can offer to our clients and audience.
But there are of course a few things that never go out of style. Story, good music, great acting, good exposure and to some degree contrast.
    People seem to enjoy contrast.
But please note that I haven't even commented on the video at hand nor the response to it.
I just commented that contrast isn't always a bad thing and shadows can be both crushed or not and still look good.

Why do you think every new camera that's ever been mentioned on this forum gets a dedicated thread with people bashing the crushed shadows.
Just to a make a new thread a few weeks later celebrating the shadow detail?
Its not because Panasony doesn't know that "nerds" like raised shadows. Its because they know that the big chunk of non nerds out their like it their way.
    And they are more important.

I've always been a little unsure about this never-ending desire to see detail in shadows. I mean - sometimes, if there's something in those shadows that you particularly want or need to see then - yeah - I get it. On those occasions you need to expose (or light if you're able) to reveal it. But most of the time I just can't se the point. Film, video, photography - even used journalistically they're not reality, where you can see into shadows with your human eyes; they're a stylised representation of reality where you, as the artist, get to use light and dark to convey a 3d scene into 2d, to model and sculpt, to draw attention and imply emotion. Seeing into a shadow is important for a sensor demo but for art - especially narrative art - it seems a particularly silly aspect of the whole to get uptight about.
FWIW I think the OP's teaser is a compelling and beautiful piece of art. His placement of black tones on the response curve is immaterial to that.

I might pick up a GH5, but definitely waiting for NAB to see what camera bodies are announced. A new A7s or something killer from Fuji would be intriguing. And I'd love to see more compact designs from Blackmagic. A Pocket-Micro revision or an Ursa Micro with a 2.3K slice of the 4.6K sensor would be kinda dope. I'd scoop that up in a heartbeat.

It's a different sensor, you just need to look at the megapixel count (16 vs 20)
There is a difference between 8bit and 10bit of course.
Cinema5D's 'precise testing' wasn't so precise and they took it offline.

I see what you mean regarding a GH5-type camera and that would be awesome. Maybe this is still in the cards for them in the near future, but I can also see why they are doing what they are. Problems as a new camera company aside, the image out of the Ursa Mini is amazing for that price. I can see why anyone would be excited by this cam and the possibilities with their tech that only they know at this point. I'm hoping they have the predicted success with their pro model and maybe we'll see these other cams like a new pocket sooner.
