graphicnatured reacted to Andrew Reid in Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
How the hell did this thread get 33,000+ views since Saturday. That is approaching half the X-H1 monster thread which has been around since February.
Just shows how much long-time demand in-waiting there was for 4K raw & prores at $1299
Doubt a mechanical HDD has the write speeds for 4K raw or ProRes. May as well stick to SD cards.
USB C is a great feature for external SSDs though and replacing a bulky HDMI recorder.
Like an Atomos Star but smaller and camera-USB-powered.

Jon, why don’t you bake in the LUT? It looks terrible!

I've heard from one experienced dealer that he expects to see them before Sept. That date is intentionally conservative.
I never pre-order cameras. I pre-ordered this one.

Exactly. But I think that it is out of discussion price shaking moment - and marvelous including of Resolve 15 studio for free. Blackmagic with huge step does democratizing cine art community - others simply have to follow.

My experience in the past with BM products is to not preorder, and wait till they start shipping. You'll be able to find a small retailer on ebay selling them that no-one preordered from and have it before most people.

To my eyes it looks like the camera is the same shape as before but has been placed in front of some other unit? Perhaps like the Panasonic YAGH or another camera?

The 5 things that would make the update WELL worth it.
4K
Slow Mo
Canon Batteries
Full sized HDMI
Flip out screen

Let's put all this on rest, OK? Let's focus strictly on the topics please. This is Andrew's house.
His good efforts simply don't deserve it. Nor your past contributions and fellowship, Jon! I'd still appreciate to follow your posts and juicy insights over these boards (your readers need you! : ) so refrain yourself to write any personal attacks addressed to others, I guess we all beg you.
We are all human beings. Opposite POVs can be written without offending the other side. No one likes to be publicly attacked, isn't it? As much as it is really unpleasant to see you or anyone else to be attacked here too.
Only goodwill may able to be considered welcome.
Regards to everyone,
E :-)

It's interesting that we've got a city getting run over by camera geeks... and then we get images served up like that.

graphicnatured got a reaction from mercer in BMPC 4k vs. GH5
Couldn't agree more. I love what I see from the GH5(s) but they still don't have the image those little BMs do. I still want a GH5s for ease and portability and will surely buy one because it is a huge step up from their older GH series. Back to the point though. Every time I'm on a shoot and see the image my Micro produces on my monitor I'm reminded of just how incredible these cheap little boxes are.

I’d take a BMPCC/BMMCC over a GH5 any day of the week, especially for narrative work.
Sure the GH5/s may be an easier solution but at a certain point, getting a great image isn’t necessarily supposed to be easy.
But if you want an all in one easy solution, the GH5 will beat the BM cameras every day of the week.
But if you want a more cinematic look at half the cost, the Pocket or Micro wins.

What I remember from days of using BM, is that raw file provide, at least for my eyes, an (important?) bit or two of more clarity in image reproduction. Very likely it is simply sum of all mentioned (indeed minuscule especially in a case of Prores HQ) differences in detail-ness. But - unwilling to be just impressionistic commentator, maybe something similar could be seen in this comparison:
Edit:
This little distinction imo actually may be crucial for achieving fantastic results of BM cameras as quite close to top cinema cameras... Because it is not matter of artificial sharpening, but of amount of details that BMPCC or BMMCC really can achieve. For examples, in one of the my most favorite clips from BMPCC there's - for me - missing of just that little bit of crispeness that would make experience as naturally stunning-real as from modern theater production

Found this on vimeo. It's probably been posted before but this is really nice from the BMMCC.

And it’s ProRes. The Pocket and Micro are amazing cameras. And still 4-5 years later, there is not as cinematic of an image from any camera at this price point. Who cares about 10bit, when you can have 12?

They really are amazing. Not as convenient or as loaded as some of the other cameras available, but for the price you cannot buy a nicer image. I think we all know that in this forum though.
THAT'S who she was calling. I thought she was calling B&H.

Pretty crazy. When I was young we busted our ass to try and get rid of Grain, and now every wants to add it!

graphicnatured reacted to Sage in GH5 to Alexa Conversion
Its probably the cheapest working Alexa ever sold, at $7800 for the body only (best offer). With shipping and minimal accessories, there was another 1.5k added on.
The seller neglected to mention (or didn't know?) that it had a history of salt water damage (I called Arri about the serial number). What this amounted to is that the SD card slot wasn't working when I received it. I got creative and cleaned the contacts in there, and it worked (the electronics in the cam are water-sealed after all). The upside of this is that it is a very recent model, with only 536 hours on the body.
I intend to make a reference quality color conversion for a variety of cameras, with side by sides to document the conversion. And then, I'll probably use it for close ups and 120fps slow motion for a narrative thereafter

A frame shot run and gun in natural light with the pocket, it says a lot to me, you guys are impressing me with the Micro, I just sorely need a 4K cam
