I saw the 2 hours long live video he made to present the Canon eos R5 (french only) and he told people who were asking him about the DR that he graded the footage extremely contrasty, because he likes it this way with big crushed blacks and the waveform scope completely extended so a lot of the information is gone. I personally don't like this grading and it may be worse after the youtube compression but he told that the DR is there and that there is info in the highlights as well as the shadows before he did his extreme grading.

He also told in the 2 hours long video posted yesterday besides this one that the new firmware with clog 3 and other improvements should be out ib September.
He was a Sony ambassador and left them to be a Canon ambassador a few weeks ago.

I'm too disappointed to buy either one. Until Canon removes that ridiculous 30min recording limit and offers backup video recording neither of these cameras can replace my GH5.  If they do add backup recording and remove the time limit from the R6 and the thermal issues prove to be not as bad as it sounds then I'll probably at a minimum get two R6's to replace the GH5 and maybe an R5 to replace the 5DIV.

I had a look at the images of the toy ferrari posted by @Lars Steenhoff . If I bring the 4K DNG and the "none" Mpeg4 mov into Resolve, it actually seems that the mov needs to be treated as Rec709 gamut - not Rec2020 - to fall in line with the way the DNG is being interpreted by the Resolve ACES IDT (unless the DNG metadata is wrong). I would need to check with the exact same frame though, but I'm basing that off the way the red was interpreted.
I'm also seeing the following tags in the mov metadata, but that doesn't mean the actual image doesn't have different primaries.
    Color primaries                          : BT.709
    Transfer characteristics           : BT.709
    Matrix coefficients                    : BT.709

Nice to see that some of the footage are available to download to play with. I thought people testing out the R5 weren't allowed to post footage... Anyway I'm gonna test it out right now !

Well my first ever camera was a 450D, and then a 5DII and 5DIII. I did not like what direction Canon took from the 5DIII and I liked what other brands brought on the table the past few years. I have also owned the EM1, the GH3,4,5, multiple Fujis and Sonys. I think Sony deserves props for how they launched the FF mirrorless movement to what it is today. Canon is getting back in the race with a great set of cameras and deserve props for that.

Cameras are just 2 things for me: a tool so I like to have the best tool for the task so I don't mind changing system if I feel a brand is proposing a tool better suiting my use. Secondly, I love tech and appreciate testing and trying new things thus why I explore many different camera options over the years.
True, I speak out loud and sometimes my point of views are extreme...

Anyway I do agree if 12mp only and not quad bayer, they are in trouble. Not nearly enough to counter R5. Sure for specialize work (video only, interview filming,...) it might be a better buy than the R5. But I believe for a majority of people the R5 will be a much better overall hybrid. Let's not forget all the historic Canon advantages I and Sony users had to close our eyes on for years (ergonomics, colors...) rightfully so because other specs were much better. Will we close our eyes on those now that Canon matches/exceed the good stuff (frame rates, no crop FF, 10 bit, flippy screen...)? Absolutely not.

I hope for Sony the 12mp rumor is a quad bayer 12/48mpx, that they integrated Venice color science, that they upgraded the touch screen and menus and they upgraded the IBIS. If not, I wish them good luck for the next 2 years.
Even for the low end battle, who will buy a A7IV for $2000 when they can get a R6 for $2500 should they both do 4K60p 10 bit, 20-24mpx with the Canon having better IBIS / colors body / ergonomics and being a Canon? The 3 dudes who need 5 hours recording time yet don't use the right Cinema camera tool for the job certainly will. For the rest of us though....

Having pre-ordered both the R5 and R6 as a tiny deposit, while i decided to get them or not, I have to say as someone who make a living with video, so far I'm concerned.
This post includes some negativity, so I just want to make it clear that having pre-ordered them for very specific reasons I want these cameras to work well.

    What it looks like.
We can only speculate, but it looks like these cameras will be either transformational or a disaster depending on their use.
I think both @Neumann Films and @Andrew Reid have good perspectives - this is how I see it.
The R5 (and the R6) look like a marvel on paper - finally the hybrid that supposedly does everything and potentially makes creating professional video very, very liberating. Very well done Canon for waking up.
But is it a kick in the balls?
A couple of years back, I was using the A7SII and A6500 in my camera bag. They overheated twice (amongst many many shoots), and it was annoying as it stopped the shoot and made us go behind schedule.
With 4k60p and 4k120 being a staple feature on many brand and music video shoots, the question is how many bursts can it handle on a fast paced shoot? I do think it will be mostly fine, as shots come in short bursts and there's gaps between setting up a new shot, the potential issue is still there. Although my EVA1 doesn't have DPAF, IBIS or a full frame - it doesn't even flinch on a shoot and I have no worries. Same with the GH5. The potential of overheating in the back of my mine is certainly not a worry i want to have. Especially with client money on the table.
I think the issue is that when people are spending a few grand on a camera, with very expensive lenses and accessories, they expect it to work for most scenarios and not have to worry about the camera having a tantrum. It's one less camera to buy and carry if you wish to do longer form content like interviews. I see people saying "buy a C300". For many, it's just not realistic.
For most things that are not very short bursts, the R6 looks like a complete write off. On paper, there's no chance that camera could keep up with multiple, consistent takes.
Also for those expecting to shoot continuous 8k RAW, go and see your Doctor. 😉

    Questions?
As some of you may know, having an external monitor at least on the hot shoe during a professional shoot is pretty much essential. Also, recording to an edit friendly codec like ProRes is sometimes a great necessity. External recording would be a fine "workaround", if you could still get the benefits of the EOS R bodies (as long as you have a HDMI lock) This will be the pressing questions for most professional shooters intending to use this system.
How long can it go in continuous bursts shooting 4k60? Someone with a body needs to test this.

    Usage
The R5 will be fine for a lot of things, but I think it will be very popular on big movies as a crash cam with that 8K RAW in such a small body.  It's very much a speciality mode that I'm sure will be used on many movie sets.
The R6, I'm not so sure.
There's other cameras out there (Zcam E2-M4 - £1300 camera with 4k160fps 10 bit), although nothing will match the R5 if overheating can be managed.
Let's hope the climax to this story is a good one.
    Tets, tests, tests.

    R6 will overheat in 4K60p after 30-40mn & in 4K30p after 40-50mn (depending on FF/S35 modes).
Shouldn't be any overheating issues in 4K24p/25p.
Let's just remember we're talking FF no crop oversampled 4K60p with DPAF in 10-bit 4:2:2 internal.
In comparison, the only hybrid camera on the market that can get close to that is the almost twice more expensive S1H which can only do 4K60p with a S35 crop in 10-bit 4:2:0 longGOP and poor contrast AF... and that camera has active cooling on board!

Not so much a joke... After I left canon for Sony a few years back, and getting tired of waiting for the 10bit 422 at least from an external recorder, i switched back to an EOS R, so I experienced Sony and Canon autofocus. Now I own an S1H and it feels like going back to the good old 5d MkII days where you had no choise of getting the focus manually. I was a bit scared to going back to ONLY manual focus, and frankly it's not that bad. it comes back naturally if you've been used to do it manually in the dslr days, and now I don't complain about it so much.
Sometimes on a few occasions on a shoot with clients I may miss the focus a bit, and I need to do another take, but it is way less problematic than I thought.
What strikes me with the S1h is the quality of the footage, the ergonomics, the unlimited recording with no overheating (I even never heard the fan start !), all the options etc. The drawbacks are lack of affordable native lens selection (but except for my 24-70 S Pro sometimes, I only shoot video with a 5 lenses Samyang cinema kit), and the continuous AF where it would have been of practical use sometimes).
Not to say I'm not waiting for the Sony a7SIII announcement to make a definitive choice (because you have a very good choice of lenses AND a very good autofocus), but for now the Canon EOS R5 leaves me a bit cold. Happy with what my S1H produces.

Same I'm a hybrid shooter and I'm still interested. I was going to get an S1H to partner my S1 but I think I might go with the R5 and use the S1 for longer recordings. That ND adaptor is fantastic, the RF glass is great (that 85mm....) and I think I could probably work around the limitations when I've also got the S1.

The S1H (that I personnally own) is weatherproofed and has a fan so it doesn't overheat. So Canon could have made this, but chose not to.
And frankly even with this overheating "issue", I'm very interested in this camera, for 2 reasons : AF in video, and lens selection available (all RF + all EF lenses). 2 main problems with the Panasonic full frame cameras.

Have to say I see the high data rate of the 4K 120fps as a positive. It's 4X the bitrate of 24p, which is exactly what it should be if it's going to look as good. I'd be complaining if it was less!
When looking at the table, the data for 4 minutes of recording time looks huge but then that's actually 16+ minutes of footage.
Personally I only shoot short clips in 120p anyway. Though the fact DPAF works in 120p means it'll be an absolute killer gimbal camera and that'll mean people wanting to do long takes.

    The R5 will only overheat in 8K, 4K60p & 4K HQ.
It shouldn't have any problems in regular 4K24p/30p.
Calling it unusable is a little extreme. What other hybrid camera can even approach these specs? 8K/4K120p FF no crop, DPAF2, RAW, 10-bit 4:2:2 internal.
Besides we've had 30mn recording limits for years due to EU laws. Hardly an issue for me personally..
That said, if Sony can do better, bring it on!

About the redesign, Tanaka said this at last year's CP+:
"Many people have enjoyed the a7S II as a video camera, but originally we designed it for stills photography users. So if we’re going to create products [specifically] for video shooters, we’ll have to modify them in the future. (...) The basic expectation is for things like 4K/60, 10-bit 4:2:2, and a lot of manufacturers are doing that right now, but I want to think in a different way and create something that goes beyond the expectations of our customers. "
I'm assuming that in order to get 4K60p / 10-bit 4:2:2 Sony has to redesign the physics of the A7 body to avoid overheating. This physical redesign is why it took them so long to release this camera and also the reason why even the latest gen Alpha bodies are still capping at 4K30 8-bit.
Really hoping the "beyond customers expectations" means some innovative tech like the Vari-ND from the FS line.. that would certainly tip the scale in the upcoming R5/R6 battle.

Don't think he said redesign did he?... More like 'Everything is new compared to the 5 year old camera'. So obviously a new sensor, LSI, EVF and so on.
I'll be very pleasantly surprised if they do a design adventure.
    Change the concept around.
    Internal ND.
    Small XC10 style camera.
    Brand new menus.
But to be honest, despite the lack of adventures and bravery in new design concepts, I am quite happy with mirrorless form factor as it is. Hybrid stills / video is my thing.
PS I cannot promise to review the A7S III or even EOS R5, because I will have to buy them and I think rather than putting $4k into another corporation's bank account we should reward innovation at better prices, from Fuji, Sigma, Panasonic and others.
Canon and Sony have practically ignored us for 5 years and now suddenly they want our money again.
Bear this in mind when you see all the stage-managed YouTube hype next month about 8K and RAW.

Your closing remarks definitely resonate with me.  While tempted by the specs of the new unreleased stuff - specifically I was looking at the R5 and RF glass, i decide to recommit to Fujifilm.  Upgraded to the X-T4 and also completed the "holy trinity" with their recent sale by purchasing the 50-140mm. Such a great, affordable, chameleon-like system.  Easy to go from street, to studio, to sports.
