I love Panasonic, but they are missing a very important, yet still optional at a flick of a switch, feature. Hope they fix it.

The GX85 continues to be a great. I had it for over 2 years and I took videos and photos that I'll cherish forever. I only sold it because I mistakenly thought something Sony and FF would do better and they were from a technical point of view, but it was much bulkier and not as fun to shoot with. I've taken a tonne of shots with the 14mm f/2.5 too- loved that combo for over a year and a half. In 2019, when I decided I'd never leave M43 again, I've been looking for that lens. Sometimes, you can find it for about 100 Euros.
Can't wait to see the results you get with the combo!

Totally agree about your comments that it's an "action" camera and that "action" is often best filmed with a fisheye.  I've watched enough skateboarding / skiing / surfing videos to know that it's definitely the right tool for the job.
The thing that bothers me about these cameras is that they don't have a way of turning down / off the ridiculous sharpening levels, or writing a higher bitrate / bit-depth.  For example, offering an unsharpened 130Mbps 10-bit 4K in a straight log curve would be great.
In terms of not getting that kind of footage any other way, it depends on what the situation is.  Sure, if you want to get footage by attaching a camera to the brim of your hat then yeah, you're not getting that with any other camera, but you don't have to compromise size or weight that much before you can get spectacularly better footage.  For example the BMMCC shoots 1080p RAW and is very small:

or the ZCam E1, which is barely bigger than the GoPro:

Both are MFT mounts and can take lenses of 7.5mm or 6mm (and some even wider if you dig far enough into C-mount history and industrial lenses) that offer seriously wide FOVs.  The 7.5mm lens is FF equivalent to a 15mm on FF and is about the same as most GoPros.
It's always a challenge of overheating vs features, and camera manufacturers have ALWAYS released cameras that work in some conditions and not others.  It's funny that most cameras don't work for people in the hot countries but when the people in the cold countries in the northern hemisphere are effected then it's all tears and forum fist shaking! 😂😂😂

Digital technologies look awful with jitters and make people sick more rapidly. The brain knows it's unnatural.
Content is king, but 99.9% of the time I'd watch a shaky old family film than a shaky iPhone family video in 2021.

    Hey Andrew,
Just saw your video, and wanted to reach out and say I hear you mate. I get it. Completely.
You helped give me the courage and insight years ago, way back in 2010, right?, to bust out and make a feature with a GH2 Lumix/Lomo. Total creative explosion that was, making Mandorla. You led the revolutionary charge, Commander.
And one of the best times I’ve had shooting was the day we shot our anamorphic Lumix/Lomos in good ol’ Buxton!
Hang in there, mate. You’ll suss this out. And everybody here will stick with you, whatever you decide!
Keep us posted. Looking forward to a pint on the otherwise of this abyss!!
    Onward!

Oh ok. Thanks to China (Fauci, Bill Gates, etc too?), Covid has slowed down the world, and ensured most peoples lives are seriously disrupted. Also, the super shady behaviour of the UN (Tedros) and others is extremely strange.

I feel the Panasonic autofocus part can be explained in 3 parts.
'Of course, we have received various opinions from our customers, and we recognize that image-plane phase-detection AF is superior in terms of subject tracking. On the other hand, as represented by deep learning, we are improving AF performance by strengthening algorithms that utilize the video signal processing technology which we are good at.
We are currently developing the next-generation system with the aim of making it even more practical, so please wait until the day we can provide it.'
    1. "we have received various opinions from our customers, and we recognize that image-plane phase-detection AF is superior".
This means Panasonic know how urgently customers have been asking for AG to be improved (which for many, may be the sole thing lacking in Panasonic cameras).
    2. "... as represented by deep learning, we are improving AF performance by strengthening algorithms that utilize the video signal processing technology which we are good at."
Which is corporate gibberish at its finest.
    3. "We are currently developing the next-generation system with the aim of making it even more practical.."
Either they're reinventing the wheel or giving us some unbelievable story regarding DfD, which is quite unreliable, and needs to be phased out on new cameras.
If they don't fix the AF, it may be aufweidersehen for Panasonic. Which would be sad, because Panasonic seems to have gotten most other things right. And the failure of the G7, G9, G95 and others as Student Indie Cameras may mostly be due to bad marketing.

I read this too. It's deplorable, the insolence with which Panasonic dismissed the whole PDAF request of the majority of users. Unless then have extra sensors (like a ToF) to fix the autofocus, its probably just a very bad decision.

I’m fairly suspicious that using Sony sensors involves use-case restrictions, not slapping the S1H sensor into a cine body could be one of those.

    Interesting interview.
"High speed USB SSD storage in M.2 format has a small footprint. Why doesn’t Panasonic make a detachable battery grip for RAW recording containing an M.2 slot? And would this be classed as “external” recording or “internal” recording? Is this different classification a problem for patents?"

I couldn't agree more. Though his response suggested that he didnt get the RED Patent refence, and also didn't wanna give RAW via HDMI/USB-C on the GH Range(?). Do any of the GH/M43 cameras have external RAW recording? Curiously, Panasonic doesn't seem to want to equip the GH6 much above the GH5, regardless of what the customers want. They are keen to protect the S-line, and seem to want to go to great lengths to handicap the GH6 just that little bit. Though he did mention a much sturdier codec ("high editing tolerance that can meet the demands of various clients").
I guess, they may stick to a sturdier (?) version of the 10-bit 4-2-2 codec for now (a good ProRed alternative?). RAW will either be completely missed or may come much later with a paid firmware update (?).

What is it that the S-line has that the GH6 won't have?
My impression of what the market wants, apart from PDAF, isn't much beyond the C4K 10-bit 422 unlimited of the GH6.
In fact, the GH groups/forums that I'm in are so populated with people who just bought a GH5 (and more join every day) that it's hard to get past the newbie questions, and these people are so happy to get a camera with even the GH5 specifications.

Interesting info about the GH5II and a little about the GH6 - but considering how much time is spent in the interview about DFD, maybe is not a good sign to a move to PDAF.

More like 16.6 stops (divide by 6.02) at SNR of 1. So about 14+(more like 14.6) stops. Great, regardless, and close to Alexa territory.

The low ISO indicates that the sensor isn't meant for ILCs, but rather for cinema cameras(?).
