Also worth mentioning, the new MBP are really fast. The high end model as better single core CPU performance than the best IMAC PRO.
The overall performance jump both in CPU and GPU vs 2017 models is enormous.

The new DDR4 memory is very fast. And the faster SSD are out of this world.
In fact PC manufacturer should feel ashamed, as seen in the attached picture.

This is possibly worth its own thread. According to Nikonrumors (no idea how reliable they are), Nikon mirrorless is coming and coming soon (possibly later this month.)
    https://nikonrumors.com/2018/07/03/first-set-of-rumored-specifications-for-the-nikon-mirrorless-cameras.aspx/
The specs sound very similar to the Sony A7iii and A7riii. (Which sounds good to me.)
The big surprise (at least to me) is that it will supposedly have IBIS. It appears to have a new mount which will take an adaptor for f mount lenses.

Eric Calabros reacted to salim in Samsung open to new camera system, joins forces with Fujifilm
I disagree with your conclusions. I think this mostly about mobile phones and perhaps some B2B chip solution.  Most likely Samsung Galaxy S10 or S11 will have a class-leading colors and in return Samsung might become a secondary chip supplier to Fuji to help Fuji differentiate vs. Sony 6500-6700, etc. Anything beyond that is just dreaming.
You underestimate what it will take for a business to return back to a failed venture that they have closed-down once. NX2 that mostly appeals to DSLR filmmakers is a niche market for Samsung. It just makes no sense. There is no money in it. Samsung wants to compete against Sony in the chip market. Even though it's going to be very competitive against Sony, is still less complicated than building an entire support structure around the world to support Samsung cameras, lenses, etc.

Indeed the main customer for this camera is surely vlogger/youtuber/street photographer and do they need a fast aperture or 200mm? Hmm. I'll let Sony figure it out.

Now I understand why Nikon cancelled the DL. If you can't make a modern premium compact and yet keep it under $1000, you better forget it.

Looking back I owe everyone a big thank-you for using the forum and taking an interest in the blog, it is amazing what it has turned into with so little effort on my part  I think this place must be the only website on the entire internet without adverts. Long may it continue like that.
Got a GX9 arriving tomorrow... about time I did a review of something cheap with the big shift to high-end stuff. Let me know what you'd like to see in the review of it.

Canon and Nikon have legacy advantage, Olympus/Panasonic have advantage of a well established and very well supported mount, Sony has advantage in sensor tech and huge IP assets in that field. What's gonna be Samsung advantage? Higher framerate? Thats far from enough.

    Honestly that is nonsense.
Look at the raw digger data from Phase One IQ250

It very clearly shows a 16 bit file with 14 bit information - which is why 3 out of 4 channels are blank.
I am not sure if we are discussing whether it is possible to create 16 bit files from 14 bits of information (which is trivial) or whether you actually think it is a good idea on the basis that it fools you into thinking you have 16 bits of information.

Apples reasons for developing their own solutions for the entire chain has a lot to do with reliability. Their reliability comes from controlling all the bits and making sure they work together.
The sum is a system that is greater than the sum of its parts because there is coherent intention throughout.
I think it’s a bit cynical to presume it’s all about “locking in” it’s users.

    With DPREVIEW:
    - The EOS M50 offers 4K video and Dual Pixel CMOS AF, but not at the same time. Is there a technical reason for this limitation?
"With the EOS 5D Mark IV, we do offer 4K video and Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus, so technically it is feasible. But given the position of the M50 in the lineup, we can’t include all of the features available in a product like the 5D IV. Given the position of the product, we wanted to achieve the optimal balance [of features] in a camera in that range."
We all knew Canon was crippling its products. Now is another proof. How can they dare sell you completely crippled shits for so much money? And people buy that.
What a ridiculous company. I am speechless.

Eric Calabros reacted to markr041 in 10bit vs 8bit HDR (HLG) Shootout Video
Is 8bit HDR or HLG a "joke"? Here is an HDR HLG video shot from the same camera (Sony FS5) using its internal 8bit 420 Slog2 XAVC and Slog2 recorded externally from 14bit RAW to 10bit ProRes HQ (Atomos Shogun). So the 8bit is heavily compressed (100 Mbps), the 10bit is not (950 Mbps!). Totally unfair to the 8bit. But, let's see...
Same scenes - for each the first version is from Slog2 ProRes 10bit, the second from XAVC 8bit SLog2 placed on the same timeline. The video was rendered in HLG 10bit DHxNR HQ in Resolve Studio and sent to YouTube. No color correction other than the Resolve presets converting Slog2 to HLG and level adjustments. It is a real HLG video. You can easily tell which is which, since the 10bit source from RAW is 4K DCI and the 8bit source is 4K UHD.

The video has plenty of blue sky, ripe for banding. And lots of detail, and high contrast with those pesky white clouds ripe for blowouts.

There is a difference. But does it matter? Is it fixable? A laughable joke?

If you do not like the test ("the test is a joke," "the test tells me nothing," "YouTube converts to 8bit anyway, so what?"), suggest what you would want to see instead. I can do anything with the original Slog2 clips, including making them available for download.

Finally, why do we care about this? ALL Sony mirrorless cameras and camcorders less than $8,000 that have log gammas (Slog2/3) and/or HLG only shoot 4K in 8bit 420 - the RXxxx series, the A7xxx and the A6xxx series, and the FS5. If shooting in log or HLG at 8bit to make 4K HDR videos is a joke, that would call into question what Sony is trying to sell, and what anyone should consider buying (note, the GH5 can only do 10bit 422 in 4K30p, not 4K60p). No Canon cameras/camcorders do 4K 10bit below $8,000 either I think. And they have log gammas. Is this a big deal?

Did you notice that they just reused their 24mp sensor again (bean counter love this profit margin). So all other EOS cameras with this sensor (mirrorless or DSLR) could really output 4k in crop, but they deliberately didn't use it! God damn

Yeah I doubt it is TowerJazz. Seems like Sony's upgrade to their 42MP BSI CMOS to me. Has all the hallmarks of one. The real puzzle is why Sony keep giving their main rival the absolute top spec sensor, whilst putting older tech in their own.
The 46MP sensor seems to have more dynamic range, lower minimum ISOs, more resolution, faster readout, possibly even onboard moire reduction in pixel binned 4K mode from 46MP and then the D850 uses XQD cards as well - another Sony tech, which they can't be bothered to put on their own cameras!
    You don't need it.
Live-view feed is crystal clear, super sharp and detailed, big screen and very high res panel. It's better than D750 and that was already good to start with.
I believe the Sigma ART lenses for Nikon mount focus the same way as the Canon versions... so there's a solution!
Definitely the new tech should filter down to a D5700 or D6000 of some sort. No crop. No moire. Just clean 4K with flat profile and super clean codec, Nikon colours, etc. It would be very popular under $800.
    It's easier...
Enable peaking in stills mode, focus, then flick the switch to movie mode to record.
The flick to movie mode has zero lag or black out. No mirror flipping, or refocussing.
Peaking looks lovely in stills live-view...pro-video quality.

Yes but for shoots where IBIS and AF are not required, manual focus & tripod still gain a more cinematic result if we're talking traditional movie-making vs new fangled IBIS / AF movie-making. I prefer a fully locked down shot to a handheld shot pretending to be locked down, if you know what I mean. Handheld is a different style. AF is a different style. It's a great shot getter though and very convenient.
I am thinking of getting a 24-120mm F4 VR II for the D850, when I need stabilisation. Nikon's VR is very effective in video mode. Close to Sony's 5 axis IBIS performance, but 3 axis not 5.
This is true (and somewhat crazy)
Anyway, talking just image quality... This thing has it. D850 over A7R III and GH5 any time. Yeah, it's only 8bit, but it has mojo by the bucketload.
Full frame FX is virtually identical in quality to the oversampled Super 35 mode.
A7R III still has a lot of shimmering and false detail going on.
The D850 is higher bitrate too.
Really is like having a 1D C Mark II.

    So back on topic
The false colour moire is there in the A7R III shot (top) but not with the D850 (bottom frame)
D850 Flat profile =/= Hybrid LOG Gamma
Certainly their most capable 4K camera yet. Better than D5.
