ntblowz reacted to BTM_Pix in Development Update - AFX Focus Module For PBC
Already hinted at (heavily !) in another thread but the AFX focus control functionality is now a lot more universal than just the Pocket 4K/6K cinema cameras.

For Pocket 4K/6K owners who want to use manual lenses as well as electronic ones there is a Hybrid mode to control the lens with the motor whilst still being able to control ISO,WB etc over BLE as usual.
Supports both Nucleus N and M motors so you can use it with small lenses and large cinema ones.
    Pre-orders start on 26th. October.
Price €199 for existing PBC owners and €275 otherwise.
Nucleus M motor requires a separate adapter, price TBA.

    Well.....
They were going to be supported eventually.
Maybe we've managed to put "eventually" into the microwave....
Something like that would be nice wouldn't it....

For anyone looking to have this functionality (and a bit more) without having to buy a specific new gimbal (or any gimbal for that matter), our AFX module launches a week on Monday.
I'm absolutely not going to give the game away before then and say that it also supports manual lenses.
Absolutely not going to spoil that surprise.

Everytime I read about the "full frame" look, I literally turn green!
It is a blasthemy to just ignore that 99% of the total planet output, maybe more, was shot on a smaller format for so many decades, and noone ever complained.
It is the new trend, I get it, but do not pretend it is a problem or there are not options/solutions.
In run n gun/verite style we usually use Canon C and FS cameras, and I know shows using even smaller sensored cameras (even main news channels, DW, Reuters and the such, I have seen them using camcorder styled cameras).
We get it, some are so young that 5DmkII is all they knew, but don't try to oversell it, it is just a hybris to our trade.
Surprisingly the C70 is heavier than the C100mkII. This is a dense camera!

Atm Apple definitely have the upper hand on camera supporting their RAW format.
People will have to choose FCX or Premiere with ProresRaw support or Da Vinci for BRAW and the RAW their camera support, or Red camera which red raw is supported by all NLE.
It's definitely not buy camera and expect to work with your NLE, or ur NLE will support all the feature from your new camera, have to pick a side!

Hence I m still on Premiere lol, can work with all cameras

This video kinda confirms what I see.. Panasonic Vlog is the most robust codec so far, can be over and under exposure and still can get away, Sony you will have to use non log profile to have "clean" lowlight, underexposed slog is so ugly.

I haven't tried the 24/25/30p so can't comment, theoretically it should give less heat than 4KHQ

Well here is my thought on the R5 after the race day

    1. AF   The most reliable method for me is the Zone AF, tracking AF on cars can get lost when I also do the panning or when the car is down to certain area on screen or if there is a lot of cars which can block the view. Expand AF can get OoF once the car goes past and I have to use manual to get back in focus quickly otherwise it is really really slow to get back to focus. (with telephoto lens), There is still occasional focus hunt when I panning across to follow the car (from forward to sideway)
    2. Custom Video Mode Major advantage over R6 is the custom video mode, currently I have set to FHD/4K50P/4K100P, so when I want to change I just press the mode and change. I can totally feel the pain for R6 user which currently doesn't have this, Canon should really update R6 for this feature.
    3. Movie Crop Mode You can't set the movie crop mode to a custom key which is super dumb, I have to go to menu each time i want to do crop mode, on Sony and Panasonic you can set key for much faster access.  If you shoot in crop mode and change to your custom mode it will still shoot in crop mode (unless in 4K100/120/8K).
    4. NTSC/PAL Selector  Much better done on Canon than Sony or Panasonic, just change the frequency and shoot, no need to format card (Sony) or restart camera (Panasonic), so if I need more slowmo I just change to NTSC and keep on shooting.
    5. Battery Issue  I had problem where it just suddenly give me error when using EF Lens on the adapter on the genuine LP-E6N battery, I have to use LP-E6NH to make the problem go away. I will need to investigate this more. Though I feel I might get more LP-E6NH at end and sell the old LP-E6N.
    6. No CLOG on H.264 This is probably the most dumbest move on Canon, we get that HEVC offer twice the efficiency but the bitrate is quite healthy on the H.264, there is absolute no technical issue for clog not on H.264! Hope Canon can really fix this as X.265 is so awful to edit.  There is HDR PQ to increase DR on H.264 if you dont want X.265 or Andrew's EOSHD Clog to emulate Clog on H.264, I used cinestyle as it matches up with the 1DX2 which also use cinestyle to help with edit in post as the video is due next day.  My editor have no problem editing the 4K50P on H.264, though 4K100P is still lag feast on Ryzen 7 4800H.

Other than that the editor say the video quality is definitely better than the C100MKII I shot on previous race, unfortunately we can't share our video as it belongs to the TV station (for subscriber only) but here is the  video from the team's media team  (some of my R5 footage is from 4:36 onwards)

I tried that LUT, I didn't like it, I don't know why the manufacturers LUTS are usually not very good. Obviously it is all subjective, but I think the maker's LUTS are always based on perfect exposure and proper lighting. Any run and gun shooter knows that those conditions are rare to never so the 3rd party LUTs when done properly, look better to me.

I think I have found the perfect VLOG to Rec.709  LUT for my uses. This is a free LUT from Ground Control. For me, the VLOG to Rec709 LUT is always the most important since it lays the foundation for the color grade and it is what's needed to match it to other cameras. After that, I make slight adjustments to exposure if needed for each clip, then overlay an adjustment clip with a creative grade over the whole project. Below is the link to the Ground Control LUT, I went back and tested it on my Street Video test project and it added a little more contrast without crushing the blacks so the clips look like they have more DR.  It also didn't completely crush the lows like the Panasonic Varicam LUTS did (Nicest 709 LUT and Aggressive 709 LUT from Panasonic).

The main thing I look for in a Rec.709 LUT is one that isn't too hard to expose for (the Leeming LUT for example always seemed so difficult to properly expose for with the GH5) and one that results in the best starting point for the color grade across a wide variety of scenes.

Ground Control VLOG to Rec.709 Free LUT
    https://groundcontrolcolor.com/products/free-sony-v-log-to-rec-709-lut

Here is an example of the 3 different LUTS with the exact same scene and no other changes. I was probably a little under exposed for this scene because I was trying to protect the sky....the GC LUT nicely kept the sky and brought up the lows.

Rode Wireless Go and Blink 500 are only good for short distance, for long distance or have view blocked (like body facing away from camera) a G3/G4 will be much better. So it depend on your distance

I shot some quick test footage today just to test my workflow from end to end prior to a paying project. The S5 is so easy to grade, I haven't even read the official how to on properly exposing VLOG and I'm using a VLOG to Rec709 LUT that I don't even know where it came from so I'm sure I'm doing it all wrong. Also I really wanted to test lowlight and the dual gain ISO so I shot some night footage. Everything is hand held, I stuck to 29.97 to test the IBIS, also I was using the kit lens so I needed every bit of shutter speed I could get.  The picture at 4000 ISO was noisier than I thought it would be considering it has dual ISO.

Also, I edited the video on a 1080P timeline then upscaled it to 2K which is how I usually do it so that I can recompose and crop in 4K.

    Battery life is insane crazy!
As a test, I put two 128GB SD cards in the camera and I hooked it up to a cheap USB 10,000 (one that isn't PD rated) and I started recording in 8-bit 4K and went to bed. When I woke up, both SD cards were full and the camera recorded for over 4 hours!

So my list is kinda short too. I had the GH5S and I was not really happy with how the video footage intercut with my S1H. It also put me at a massive disadvantage because of the low megapixel count. So I sold off the GH5S with grip, PanaLeica 12-60 f/2.8-4 lens and 5 OEM batteries for a ridiculously low price ($1500) to get me the following things:
A worthy companion to my S1H in the video department, in color, resolution, dynamic range and codecs. An equal to the S1H for my ever increasing photo gigs. The first thing that I noticed was how small this thing is! I don't have this as a pro or a con, but in any case, it's a significant departure from the S1H.
The next thing that shocked me was the removal of the VFR and HFRmodes that the S1H possess. For all practical purposes, this is now a 60p at best camera with internal conforming functionality. All 1080p modes are now bit limited garbage, and the 10-bit 1080p 120fps will be missed on my S1H.
Another thing that it missing is the ability to add codecs to your own custom menu setting. I used this instead of having codec combinations assigned to the C custom buttons, because using those also changed things like aperture, ISO and shutter.  Hopefully, this comes back with the firmware update later in the year.
I haven't been able to determine if the 0 video noise reduction setting is equivalent to the S1H 0,-1, or some other noise reduction level. That will need more testing.
Battery Life is fantastic! I hooked up a cheap USB battery pack rated at 7800 mAH, put in two 128 GB SD-Cards and switched to 4K 8-bit (for unlimited recording) and started the camera and went to sleep. When I woke up the camera was dead, but it recorded over 4 hours of video nonstop and filled up both cards. I'll have to put in two 256 GB secrets to see how much they will record before the camera dies. I was also able to use the extreme power save mode and shoot stills at a wedding for 6 hours. I took almost 900 photos and only lost one bar of battery life.
Many are complaining about the EVF not being higher resolution, but I think it's pretty decent. In the included photo, you see the S5 connected to the Canon 80-200 f/2.8 using the Sigma MC-21. I shot a wedding with that alongside the S1H and I manually focused the entire time.

Well here's my first use of the S5.
Neutral profile, no tweaks to any in camera settings, SOOC, 4k 50p shot in shutter priority 1/100 with the 20-60mm kit lens.
Clips imported into Premiere and only adjustments have been to the speed which is 50% for the visuals.

Well my initial thoughts will be slightly shorter than your much more detailed report @herein2020 but I will add more as time goes by.
First, why did I buy this camera, where was I coming from and intended use?
Long time Fuji XT3 user, hoped an XH2 would have been with us by now but no signs and though the XT4 would do the job for me, the lenses do not. Great images, both stills and video and though the bodies are very video capable, I feel the lenses are not, so it was time to change.
    I have 4 basic requirements:
1: a personal/travel camera relatively compact that delivers very high quality results.
2: a camera that can do 50-100mp landscape photography.
3: a static video unit that can do 4k 60p for 30 minutes at a wedding and doesn’t have overheating problems.
4: a pair of hybrid units each with a prime, 4k 60p 10bit internal, IBIS.
The S5 for me definitely ticks 3 of those boxes and all 4 if I can live with the focus for video in the hybrid role at weddings.
So far so good and though I initially had some buyers remorse, I have none now and love the thing.
I love the grip, but then I came from an XT3 so nuff said!
The AF has so far proved to be erratic but I already knew that and for 95% of my use, I can and will be using mf. I do have a need for AF though if only a few times on a shoot and that is a potential issue that I may avoid completely by getting and using a pair of Nikon Z6ii’s for my use need 4:
AF accuracy on a brief photo shoot scored 71/72 and the single oof was user error.
The quality of both stills and video is stunning. I am not big into grading and though I shoot raw for stills, prefer not to shoot log for video.
I shot all the video material on the natural profile yesterday for a promo video and SOOC it looks gorgeous. I have yet to edit it and tweak it, but I can already see it’s very good.
I had a couple of very minor issues yesterday but pretty much all due to lack of familiarity with the system and user error, but nothing that is going to be a problem that I can see so far.
Re. lenses, I only have one and that is the 20-60 which was surprisingly decent in lowish light and not too shabby with DOF. For the price, this lens is really good and though it does not replace a set of primes, especially for my hybrid wedding work, for my other 3 case needs, it’s perfect.
Summary, so far, 9.5/10 and it would be for me a genuine ‘perfect’ camera if it had PDAF.
    OK, I wasn’t that short... 😉
