1. Hello friends :-) something beautiful just happened. My entry for the RODE ROCKUMENTARY contest made it to the finals. Out of 200 entries coming from 48 countries, I got shortlisted. Right now it’s all down to voting... more friends and you’ll win! It's the ONE and ONLY video made with a hacked GH2 !!! Your vote will enormously help to kickstart my career. In retun I will personally drop boxes of chocolates to your doorstep link: http://www.rodemic.com/rockumentary/47866136

  2. Moire? I know that it's an early version, but how disappointing. Being able to shoot without thinking about moire that was one of the big reasons that I switched from Canon EF-S over to Panasonic MFT in the first place. I really hope that this is at the top of Panasonic's list to fix.

    The Panasonic GH3 is here

@markm Yep...We definitely need to learn a lot more. So far there have been some really great things, but I feel a lot of reservation about buying this camera. I havent seen anything (yet) that beats the GH2 as far as video is converned in terms of clarity (I dont like to use the word sharpness...cause I have mine to -2)...just detail...good solid clean detail. Where was it in those room shots especially the wider ones, it was really soft (everything was), it just amazes me people cant see that. I know the GH2 has the limited dynamic range, but if you shoot in the right circumstances it is not a big issue really (for me) and the Zacuto shootout showed that also. But that softness would get to me, its what I did not like about the 5D Mk 3 ...although the GH3 is not nearly as bad, it does not look (from these early videos) to look as detailed as the GH2 sadly...I hope I am wrong, I want to be wrong. We will see.

  4.
I agree, that test shot, I did not like. Though it might be based on the shooters taste. Waiting for more samples :D
shooters taste aside, he got the gh3 before anyone else and all he does with it is shoot random stuff in the streets? Really? What about challenging the camera to see what it is capable off? Go through high dynamic range setups, test the rolling shutter, duplicate the shots with the gh2 to compare, make a video with the different iso ranges to see which ones are usable, test the different video formats, movie modes, test to see how well the footage holds up in post-production with the new codec etc...etc... I know most likely he will come up with more vids, but I don't think I am being too demanding of gh3 testers to come up with something more than a cat on a chair shot with no preparation what so ever

  5. I think there has always been historical differences between China and Japan. China though is really becoming a concern as a super economy helmed by a dictatorship. Global warming was damaging the planet before china's industrial revolution NOW it is accelerating it massively. We in the UK go on about increasing the size of a single airport. China in a year will build 80. The reason why China has become so big as because as consumers we buy as cheap as we can So our own manufacturing and working classes become unemployed Most of the money goes to china as we import cheap goods and then the money we save on those cheap goods go in taxes to pay for the working class unemployed while at the same time destroying the planet. How clever is that? All our governments need to do is put an import duty on cheap goods from china to level the playing field and the problem goes away. We have so called religions murdering people in their name We have religions who poo poo global warming. We have religions telling people not to use contraceptives. We have massive religious families expanding and spreading their word. We have western governments trying to control and takeover everything. Is there any hope? At least we'll be able to record the end of the world in glorious detail. IF the cameras get produced that is. ;)Jokingingly

  7. Man... I thought he'd shot it with an Alexa. Was stunned when he said GH2. Wasn't even hacked. The 720/60p mode on that camera is probably the best there is. But also all credit to him, his shot selection and choice of lenses was extremely good.

    The Panasonic GH3 is here

My Take on the GH3 so far... To sum up my thoughts. I am very unimpressed with the video I have seen thus far. It totally lacks the clarity and unique appeal of the GH2. I was looking forward to this camera for a long time and on paper it looks fantastic! I love the shooting modes, it would be a dream come true for people looking for slow motion shooting. I love the aluminum build and weather sealing. Not having a multi aspect sensor is something I can live with. I just hope that the problem has more to do with Panasonic's marketing team & lack luster unveil rather than the camera itself. However; I suspect that the new sensor is not capable of providing the wonderful moving images that the GH2 is famous for. As others have said, it looks very similar to what we have come to expect from Canon DSLR's. I hope that firmware patches can solve some of the issues but I am skeptical. I will stick with my GH2 unless I'm proved to be wrong. Thoughts?

  10. Moire, aliasing, no XLR accessory, no focus peaking and viewing problems with EVF. Firmware can only fix so much. Is it possible to adjust audio levels whilst recording? Is noise and banding reduced in ETC mode? Panasonic have admitted that the popularity of the GH2 surprised them. Maybe the GH2 was just a wonderful fluke of design? Did the GH2 design team work on the GH3?

  11. Andrew, please also try to get some test footage from the Canon 6D. It would be very interesting to see if Aliasing is stronger than on the 5D Mark III and to see if the resolution of the 6D is higher. From the GH3 test footage I've seen, I also agree that Aliasing of the GH3 is definitely stronger than of the GH2. I don't think that this can be fixed with a newer firmware version, unfortunately.

  13. Thanks Andrew for doing this. Best insight into the GH3 I've seen so far. Sitting there on the table next to the 5DMIII it looks great! Hope they can fix the moire "problem", the GH2 handles moire very well.

  15.
The footage still looks soft especially in lower light levels. I would think this could be on par with a canon mark3
Agreed. No detail on the faces in the crowd. Looks 5Dish to me.

  16. My thoughts exactly Astro So far it has only looked good on paper And what we've seen looks like markII footage wait and see fingers crossed

  17.
You're not making any sense.
Don't undermine me
The GH2 was arguably said to have the best picture....by a POLL ON NOFILMSCHOOL.COM, not within the documentary. In fact, only a few people chose the GH2 in Ep.2, not "most" as perpetuated here.
I was talking about the Zacuto challege 3 Why are you talking about the second?
In Ep.3, what was shown wasn't a superior image, but a sub par image beyond resolution capabilities.
Thats YOUR opinion and if I undestand what your saying is that the driftwood hack gives an inadequate picture that is built on a camera incapable of high resolution. Stop hiding behind clever words and call it what it is. That is deceptive, The Driftwood hack on the GH2 in my opinion gives it a picture quality that competes with an Alexa within the limitations of 8 bit 4.2.0 and DR of course anything above that and you have no chance. That is what is so special about the BMC which really is a baby Alexa.
The "blind test" wasn't really blind at all because it was the result of re-lighting AND heavy post correction. In other words, it was misleading.
The test did what it said on the tin and under these conditions the GH2 arguably had the best picture. Of course these were conditions set up by Zacuto and real life conditions will mean something else. We dont need this explained by YOU as Zacuto explained it before hand with warnings and concerns. A driftwood hacked GH2 can be as good as an Arri or Red within its confines as it is still only 8bit 4.2.0 However so are the films you watch in HD The point is 8bit 4.2.0 can look as good as 10 bit 4.4.4 providing you get the lighting exposure DR and dont have to change things much in post. Under these circumstances the GH2 HACKED competes with an Alexa.
By "far more", who are you referring to? The Zacuto staff? The theater attendees? They don't support your argument as maybe only 3-4 chose "B"/GH2.
I said arguably the best picture That means some preferred the GH2.
Or are you referring to the nofilmschool.com poll results?
I didnt read this.
Be more specific and less dramatic.
Who do you think you are telling me how to think and act.
No, but what you DID do was create more hyperbole by using Coppola's name to give credibility to the GH2 being a superior image. When in fact it was heavily corrected (how many windows were needed again?) footage to the point of not even being GH2 footage any longer. Coppola chose an image that he liked, this is true. However it wasn't a "native" image, it was severely changed.
Every camera was allowed to light and colour correct how they wanted and the test was to find out how a good DP and colourist could make the image look. BUT THE INFORMATION HAS TO BE THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE, The GH2 with driftwoods hack LOOKS just as good as an Alexa AND no one would spot the difference providing there are no areas overexposed Obviously though within the confines of what the GH2 8bits 4.2.0 and DR can do. The Zacuto test proved exactly that. My advice to you is to learn more and understand why this can be so. Many people have spent an awful lot of time unlocking the potential of cameras like the GH2 for these reasons.. The driftwood hacked GH2 can under the RIGHT circumstances be as good as an ALEXA Get used to this and stop trying to subvert facts to fit into your preferred world reality.

  18.
How do you guys know that it's going to be as sharp as the GH2? if it's using a totally different more conventional sensor it could just be soft OM-D quality with a higher bitrate. Still going to need to see some raw footage. Entirely different sensor leads me to question this will be as sharp as the previous camera.
https://vimeo.com/49558910 Watch the prototype footage.

  19. In regards to everyone discussing I-frame/intra-codec compression the Gh2, GH3 amd 5DmkIII here are my own notes based on spending a lot of time testing (and my experience as consultant to tech companies in the past, which is not as an engineer). Question 1: Is there any reason to believe that the Gh2 and GH3 would be sharper at given Intra-codec bitrate than another camera, like the 5DMkII or 5DMkIII? A: The primary determinant of the cameras video mode sharpness (other than the lens used, etc.) is approach to downscaling/downsampling the image in combination with the processor used. The codec format and bitrate determines how much of that information is preserved but a huge amount of information is lost before it even gets that chance. The GH2 feautres a superior downscaling/downsampling algorithm to that used in the Canon APS-C DSLRs and 5DMkII and 5DMkIII. That means that there is more information for the codec to start with. Therefore, given an equal bitrate and equally effective algorithms, the GH2 would be capable of recording more detail. Question 2: How big a role does bitrate play in determining image quality? A: Increasing the bitrate increases the range of material that can be represented to the codec`s best ability. At some point you hit a point of diminishing return where there are essentially no realistic scenarios that receive any benefit. Usually this happens some point before you reach the bitrate it would take to reproduce the data in uncompressed fashion. But if your codec is really weird, it is theoretically possible to have it be less efficient than uncompressed at high enough bitrates. At 70mbps or 80 mpbs, frame size is still much smaller than what would normally be used for a JPEG of similar dimensions (as a somewhat unrelated reference point given the differeing efficency of .h264 encoding) and compression artifacts can easily manifest themselves depending on content and the specifics of the encoder. The most common h.264 artifacts are macroblocking and mosquito noise. If you scene does not have sufficient detail to suffer from one of these (or some of the less common artifacts) then any gains from increasing the bitrate will be subtle at best. Note that changing from GOP1 (I-frame only) to IPB encoding has a much more dramatic difference as it affects the way grain is handled in a scene (or shadow detail) by changing the "update frequency" with which the codec handles what it considers to be "low detail" or "low priority" areas. Raising the bitrate will not make much difference if you are not spotting artifacts in the first place. A general softness is not the result of a low bitrate: macroblocking often is. Question 3: Can we get a sense for how the GH2 handles/would handle bitrates around 70 to 80 mbps and possibly compare them to the 5DMkIII? A: Yes, there multiple settings that Nick Driftwood made for the Gh2 much earlier on that did just that. Note that they do not use the newer high detail matrices and various other tricks, but they still outperform the 5DmkIII in terms of resolved detail. Look up SMBU (v1) from last year and some of the early Quantum X settings from early this year that target lower bitrates (Pictoris is available in two matrices with both CBR and VBR options and there may be others). Question 4: Does the bitrate of the GH3 All-I settings affect GH2 settings or serve us reason for new ones? A: No, the bitrates were already tested and provided as settings and the newer matrices may have issues at lower bitrates. In addition, the specifics of the codec handling on the Gh3 may mean a difference in performance at the same bitrate (remember that the GH2 could often look better at the same bitrate than the GH1, even with simlar GOP settings).

  20. I'm not seeing much increase in dynamic range at all. Even in the stills on the panasonic website there is highlight clipping all over the place http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/dslm/gh3_special/gallery/index.html Rumours talked about a high dynamic range sensor, but this looks like stealth marketing. The only reference to high dynamic range on the website is a multi exposure hdr mode for stills. No flat mode for video, although you can turn the contrast down which may do something. As far as the multi aspect sensor, I don't think it is one. By looking at the pictures of the cam without the lens mount the sensor clearly looks smaller with black borders all around, and as already pointed out the horizontal resolutions on the website are 4608 for all aspects. Both of these things strongly indicate a regular sensor. I think dpreview made a mistake. They probably saw the different aspect ratios and just assumed panasonic wouldn't go backwards on such a good feature, so they just copied and pasted the sensor stuff from the gh2.

  22.
No it did not and that bit of strong misinformation was further perpetuated by this site as well. The GH2 had a HUGE amount of grading only surpassed by the iPhone and scene re-lighting to compensate for its small DR. The actual default image (shown in Ep.3) wasn't very good at all beyond resolution detail really. I'm curious to see what the "wide dynamic range" capability actually is with this newer model though. The colors are a big turn off for me, so maybe that's a saving grace beyond deluded fandom support :-/
1 The GH2 arguably had the best picture well of course it did within the confines of the zacuto challenge 3. It's so annoying when people dont check their facts and run others down. On the Zacuto blind test many picked the GH2 as their favourite. I did. No less than Francis Ford Coppola picked the GH2. 2) As for the grading SO WHAT. The test was to see who could get the best picture and ALL cameras got the same chance or are you saying it was unfair in favour of the GH2. 3)You admit resolution was okay and then have an opinion NOT FACT An opinion by the way that far more professional people completely disagree with. 4)Who cares what you are curious about? 5)Dont judge me. I am not a fan of any camera I only care what it can do. 6) You have given no information only to down the GH2 and to down me for giving facts and you did this with insults inuendo and either lying or no knowledge of the facts. Are you a troll?.

  23.
I'm using a 64GB 95MB/s sandisk card, and I can't go above CBR 1.4. I don't see these noise improvements people keep mentioning. I really hope it's just me messing up.
It is ;) You have to switch off sound recording in the normal Canon menus, then you can get to 2.8 or 2.9 with that card.
