Sigma addresses Leica SL2 battery power error with MC-21 adapter firmware update

Leica SL2 with Sigma 45mm F2.8

For some background on this Leica SL2 problem, see my interview with Leica here.

I am currently re-testing the Leica SL2 with vertical grip, to see how the battery performs with various lenses. Following on from the earlier situation where 4K recording is met with an error message on the SL2 depending on the lenses used, Sigma has now optimised this with a firmware update for MC-21 (Canon EF mount adapter for L-mount), which should allow the adapter to be used for 4K recording. The question is, for how long!

Did Leica just veto the Sigma MC-21 Canon EF adapter for L-mount? So much for an alliance!

Above: The Sigma MC-21 adapter was to give Canon EF lens owners the ability to use their lenses on all L-mount mirrorless cameras including the Panasonic S1

What’s the point of having an alliance around a single lens mount if the adapters and lenses don’t work on every camera?

That’s the big question Panasonic, Leica and Sigma should be asking themselves today.

An update on the NX-L speed booster for the Samsung NX1

[pullquote]Comment on the forum[/pullquote]

(Above, shot on the NX1 & full frame NX-L).

The Samsung NX1 is at this moment in time the best value for money 4K Super 35mm camera with the best ergonomics and autofocus.

I still end up using my NX1 more than my Sony A6500 and Fuji X-T20, which pale into insignificance vs what Samsung did nearly 3 years ago.

Now the NX-L speed booster has developed further since my last article and I’ve been shooting a lot more with it.

Officially announced – Metabones Canon EF Speed Booster for Micro Four Thirds and Panasonic GH4

m43-sb-2

First impressions review

The long awaited active Canon EF mount Speed Booster adapter for Micro Four Thirds is finally here. I have a review sample, currently putting it through a few shoots to see how it performs. This is not the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera version but the general Micro Four Thirds mount adapter, so fully compatible with most Micro Four Thirds cameras including the GH4, but not yet the E-M1 or E-M5 due to the overhanging bodywork directly over the mount on those cameras. Finally you can use all your Canon lenses with full electronic support for aperture control and stabilisation.

Metabones firmware update for Canon EF adapter improves compatibility with Sony A7S

Update on the update: Firmware update app is currently Windows only, Mac version available within the next 24hrs

Metabones have announced a firmware update for their Smart EF Mark IV adapter (E-Mount). This is a must-have update for A7S users who have experienced buggy behaviour with their camera using Canon lenses.

The firmware update is available from Metabones here along with full instructions.

If you have the earlier Mark III version of the adapter the firmware update must be done back at base. To do this users should contact Metabones to arrange the return.

Metabones Speed Booster for Canon EF to Micro Four Thirds Mount – Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Edition

speed-booster-2

Along with Philip Bloom and James Miller I have been testing a beta of the first Micro Four Thirds mount Smart EF adapter with Speed Booster from Metabones. Now the final version is available and it will start shipping end of June for $659 at the Metabones site. This version to be released imminently is designed ONLY to fit the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera.

This has the lovely 0.58x glass which turns the 3x crop Blackmagic sensor into a much nicer 1.74x crop, approaching the Super 35mm standard size for cinema.

James has shot some rather lovely footage with it. Do check that out at Philip’s evil rival site to mine 🙂

Sony NEX E-mount gets Metabones $399 electronic Canon EF adapter / Canon C300 available for pre-order

Pricing has been announced for the Canon C300. As expected it is $15,999. B&H are taking pre-orders for the PL mount version here and the EF mount C300 here. Both are the same price. Orders will ship 30th January.

This is great news for NEX 5N and FS100 owners. Suddenly that limited range of E-mount lenses have been supplemented by the entire Canon EOS range! Metabones are set to release a fully electronic interface adapter for Canon EF lenses to Sony e-mount (NEX 5N, FS100). Unlike the bulky MTF adapter it has electronic communication between the Sony body and Canon lens itself so you can adjust aperture on the camera. It also supports IS and requires no external power.
