What a masterpiece of thermal engineering ?

Indeed. Can't understand why they don't make a good weather-sealed bigger pro body. Are they afraid they will hurt their partners to who they supply their sensors?
So they just release small (not good weather sealed and overheating) concept bodies to show off their sensor technology?

I could see Black Magic entering the fray with one or two stills-oriented cameras that can shoot video as well.

They better work on auto-focus then. I think the still market is too crowded and hardware wise way more complicated (weather sealing, ergonomics, battery life, etc).

You don't think Sony can create and release a new processor since 2014? That's 5 1/2 years. In camera time that an incredible amount of time.

Indeed. Even Canon did release 2 new Digic Processors since 2014 (digic 7 in 2016 and digic 8 in 2018)

Have a look at Affinity Photo, Designer and Publisher, software you pay for and own, the three programs are incredible for the cost and have just been used by Apple to benchmark their new Mac's (using Affinity Photo).

Indeed. Rarely need and use them, but they are easy to learn and cheap to buy/own. They don't release new version every year but keep updating the current one. When they do release a new major version, I will upgrade just to support them. There should be more firms like these.

  5. Adobe Lightroom is a good example. Luckily I still use the last perpetual license. It's only available now in an expansive plan with Photoshop which I never use. I downloaded the last Lightroom Classic Trial and I'm shocked to see that there are no major changes in the 2 year it was out. From what I can read on the Adobe forums, Ligthroom 6 is more stable than any version after that including the last Classic. Pay monthly to be an Adobe beta tester. No thanks!

  6. I think they will still release a 7D III with everything unlocked (clean hdmi, dual sd, uncroped 4k, joystick) without flippy screen and a 90D after that with single sd card, flippy screen and some limitations on the video features (compared to 7d III). Would not make sense to release a 90D with all 7D III features for a 90D price point.

At some point Canon has to be competitive, X-T3/30 and a6400/500 are a lot better than anything Canon has to offer right now and m43 is a lot better in video and competitive in stills, while FF mirrorless are getting cheaper and cheaper..

It is hard to believe some of these rumors though..sound more like wishful thinking than real world possibilities, but on the other hand, I believe they exhausted on sales the abilities of their hardware. Now they need to compete in every segment they can.

Not sure about that, we are talking about Canon here. The 80D did sell very well and was released with only soft 1080p when all the rest had already 4k. Release this 90D with slight MP bump, 4k and dpaf and it will sell. Everyone who went to Sony or Panasonic for more advanced and better video will now not sell everything to go back to Canon. They lost those customers.

  8. Not sure what they will do. But highly doubt the 90D will be a mirrorless EF mount camera. That would effectively hurt their R mount platform and lenses.

Another rumour is that this 90D will replace the 7D2 and 80D, have dual sd card, clean HDMI and 4k cropless recording. Kind of feels to good to be true for the 80D price point. Would indeed hurt their full frame as the new sensor and specs would be better than the much more expensive 5D4.

Panasonic is supposed to be working on TOF focus systems. I suspect within a generation or two of the cameras we will see that feature added. Those systems will be superhuman accurate. When those kick in, it will give the hybrid cameras like the S1(mark 2 or 3) a distinct advantage over the cinema cameras.

I'm not sure TOF focus systems will be the complete solution. See all sort of problems with rain, glass, bars, etc fooling this system.
How will you do calibration? How about an event with multiple camera's that have a TOF focus system? Will they not interfere with each other?

The YI M1 mirrorless MFT camera with 12-40mm lens is now on sale for $150 (the original price was $499). The technical specs are:

20MP Micro Four Thirds CMOS Sony IMX269 sensor

    3-inch LCD touchscreen

    5fps

    ISO range: 100 - 25.600

    4k/30P video

    Wi-Fi, Bluetooth built-in

Video quality is not that good unfortunately. Last firmware luckaly gives manual control in video.

  11. Aliens will certainly vote for Sony ?
Both are protecting their higher end cinema camera's, but in a different way.

Canon -> Good color, crappy specs

Sony -> Good specs, crappy color

Making sure you will not use these 'cheap' body's to replace your cinema camera's.

If someone manages to get a BM camera that shoots RAW then they'd have to really stuff things up to not be the winner..  even if someone else manages to get 4K!

Would be kind against the spirit of this contest (same reason ML raw is not allowed). Then one could also use an external ninja recorder with other camera's. I think the contest is to just use internal h264/etc of the camera.
