Well they did base it on a design of a hybrid 20D  and 5D.
Just not the ones people were expecting.

I had a z6 before my actual Panasonic S1. I believe, with the latest firmware update, the af is miles ahead than what it used to be. @Jordan Drake rates video AF very highly, and I came across comparisons with the A7iii, and the z6 is not extremely far from it (at least for my needs, which exclude eyes af, and also compared to my S1). For the codec, same thing, it punches higher than its weight. In fact, I am right now browsing "old" footages I took with it, and play with them in resolve to compare with my S1 10bit. The nikon flat profile, as frequently reported, is very good. Sure, as you point out, it is weak compared to other offerings, but it quite good. To be honest, as I browse my old footages, I find more pleasing images than with my S1. I don't know, despite the very robust specs of the S1, and the image quality, there is something in the Z6 image that I find lacking in the S1 (a bit of "soul" maybe). So yes, if nikon could raise the next Z models to the level of offering of the competition (codec and better AF like you said), it could be a beast.
I forgot about the lenses, but the Z line-up is really good, and more interesting  for me than the RF and L. Plus, as I shoot with tele, the 300pf and 500pf have no competition...

Ps : the battery problem on the S1 drove me crazy, to the point I am gonna get rid of it (plus the overall bulk and the af, that I now need, and I did not back when I bought it), and i am contemplating going back to the Z6 of entering the Sony system.

Agree. The z6 is nearly this. But the af is totally amateurish, as is the codec.
Add to your list 15ms readout.  (And 13.5 stops dynamic range in stills minimum)

I'm sorry, I just can't get over that upside down sony when the screen is flipped out. It is so obnoxious. It's this kind of lack of attention to detail coupled with the fugly menu system that just makes me question the designers. You are right Andrew, there is no soul to this camera.
At least with the S1 you get a beautifully designed, rugged body which makes you want to shoot.
Pending the heat management, though, this looks like a solid corporate camera for people who care about form factor.
It doesn't crush anything. The s1h is netlfix approved camera for a reason and is reliable. We are yet to see what this will do other than a puff piece.
People who judge a camera just on specs make me cringe.

I wouldn't worry about the specs of other cameras, the S1H is a known reliable workhorse ,the R5 seems like an unreliable show pony that I can't see anyone using on a serious video production, the A7s3 looks more solid but we're yet to see what the time restrictions with heat management mean for shooting times...
As mentioned above the 4k60p on the R5 is bad, better to have a high quality crop than a sub standard full frame image.
And yes the RAW update will take this camera above the other 2 for cheaper more efficient and reliable RAW if that's your thing.
4k 120p is not something I would use very often I'm already cringing at the amount of unmotivated slow mo that is going to be filling up Youtube - but if it's really important then let's see what the quality of the Sony is.
All the S1H is really lacking over the other 2 is good AF imho

You are right, I am not a pro (yet 😄 ) so I will wait to see how the situation evolve... but I will have an eye on the next canon bodies, because half of my lenses are EF. As you said, image and ergos are so good, and Sigma will surely announce more lenses, so waiting may be a good thing. The camera has no problem other than that (ah, yes, the sd card door... feels unfinished, as many have reported, but I fixed it by using a smallrig cage eheh).
Oh, and on the photo side, because I use it for 50/50, it is a pure joy also !

So going back to the original topic.
DPReview forum mod locked and censored posts with photos of anti-racism protests.
You could ask yourself why? And what do you think about that?
On the front page, the headline about the police targeting photo journalists was misleading. In the article, the photographer had their lens broken by a protester.
Do you think this is acceptable - to vilify the police and then use two completely false examples of police brutality?
Americans need to start questioning more.
    No.
And by the way, I am not a "rabid liberal" whatever that is.
I have a mixture of complicated views, some of them socially liberal, some of them agreeing with Joe Rogen's podcast a lot of the time, some of them fiscally conservative, it's a big old mix.
This is why it is so stupid we are putting people into tribes of far left and far right.
    It is way more complex.
However, capitalism selects for extremes so this is the result. A fading away of any middle ground, and two tribes battling it out for supremacy and control.

The cop is being charged with 2nd degree murder because he killed a man and you’re still trying to defend him, solely for the reason that he’s a white cop! Get the hell out of here with that. He had 18 prior complaints filed against him.

No, sorry Mark, I replaced this supplied AC adaptator :
    By this ravpower ac adaptor:

It has 2 ismart ports that I use for charging more slowly and (I hope) preserving the lasting of the batteries. It also has a PD port, in case I need to quickly charge as with the supplied AC adaptor. Very handy when travelling.
I did this after having watch th comprehensive video from Panasonic about the charging options for the S1 series (and before a long hiking trip).
I also brought this ravpower powerbank :

Same story : 2 regular ismart ports, and a Type-c PD in case I need it.
Fun facts : I recharged 2 or 3 times the batteries inside my tent, by sub zero temperatures and high humidity, with the powerbank. I had to put the charger in the camera bag or sleeping bag because the charger detect the humidity rate and do not start the charging if unhappy !

Many people report battery problems, on the dedicated s1 Facebook groups, and, for example, on dpreview where someone tried to investigate the issue : https://***URL removed***/forums/thread/4461103?page=5
I encountered problems too, like the conflincting infos between camera and charger... One day, I had my charger indicating 100% for 2 batteries, and when I put them in camera, it showed around 70 or 80%. I also had shutdowns with many % remaining.
I have 5 original batteries, not very used so no time wearing at work here.
I will pay attention to this when I will be back to Shoot.

Might wait until October to purchase just in case Sony announce something special in the interim...

    We need specific info...
    1. Lens in use when power cut
    2. AF mode in use, or was it manual focus?
    3. Ambient temperture - roughly
    4. Video mode - 4K/60p? or 24p?
    5. Age of battery and did the problem only start occuring under same conditions as battery aged?
Please help me reproduce the error with my S1.
And I will pass the results onto Panasonic in the UK who will feed it back to Japan.

    Hallo friends,
Before one buys a camera one of the rather important things for professional video is a reliable battery solution. That includes not only adequate battery life but precise power meterting and levels as well. It is very unpleasant to say the least to have a camera shut down during filming. My Lumix S1 has shut down twice in a row now at 20% power left. After six months of moderate usage the original battery seems not reliable anymore. Anyone of you S1 owners and users with the same issue? I am planning on selling my camera, as I am not willing to test and test for battery issues and to have to bother with doubts. Hopefully some of you can give some insights. Otherwise awesome sensor and soso menues. Pipeline in 8bit is also impressive. Cheers

    Same for me !
Used a lot of dslr by the past (mostly Nikon), then Fuji (X-T1 and X-T2), a Nikon Z6 and now a S1. We read a lot of "the camera that inspires me to shoot" concerning Fuji, and this is exactly the same for my S1. I loved my Fujis, but the S1 suits me like nothing before, handling, buttons, grip... I often shoot in challenging situations (cold, snow, shitty weather...), and the S1 is the perfect tool for that. It is big and heavy, sure, but offers so much that I forgot about it !
I will soon be in the market for a complementary body, smaller and lighter if possible, to share lenses (L-mount and Canon ef) with the S1. My list is now reduced at : Fuji X-T3 and Sigma FP if I find a good deal.

    +1 for the fp.
Very rarely have to go into a menu once you've set it up, which is always a good sign but could maybe do with a programmable button on the front.
One annoyance with the QS button is that it retains selection by numbered position rather than function so I leave it on ISO (which is option 6 when in Cine mode) as thats what I am most likely to change but when I change to Stills mode and press the QS is it is on the JPEG/RAW selection which is option 6 in that mode.
Tell your mate about that one next time he is re-tweeting your pictures !
With regard to the SL2, I could have done with that faux leather finish on my SL as it probably would have averted the disaster I had dropping it onto the tiled floor.
