IMO hybrid cameras like the s1 and s1h have reached cinema level image quality, even with the internal codec.
Motion cadence is probably the biggest struggle for non cine cameras but panasonic has motion really well handled.

I guess I'm in the camp that believes mirrorless hybrid cameras can hold their own against their cinema counterparts when it comes to the image they produce.

It's not standard today. But who buys a camera today without looking for how it may fare in the future?
ZCam, Kinefinity, RED and Alexa all have full frame either released or in the queue.
Additionally, the S1 series being hybrid cameras truly needed full frame for better photography performance.
The nice thing is, you can still use your S35 glass with no problem, and get the look you've come accustomed to, with the option to graduate to full frame look in the future.
    It's nice having options!🌞

Holy shit, I thought that the scales were wrong, played with the file in Gimp but they are right.

Made a VERY crude size comparison with the GH5 (got a size comparison between the S1 and GH5 in Camerasize, and used the S1 mount as size reference - sorry for the quality) and...looks like that it is even smaller than the GH5.

There are some advantages, as you have mentioned. But on the flip side of the coin, there are disadvantages not easily overcome. Event work in low light is a big one. Getting shallow DOF without f/.95 glass in another. If you are shooting controlled narratives, it may not be a big deal to you as you can always light your talent. But in event work, you gotta deal with what light is available.
I have the Panasonic GH5S and the S1H so I currently shoot with both, but if the S5 checks enough boxes, I'll go full frame all the way.

I personnally use afc all the time for stills on my S1H and so far 90% of my pictures come in focus. Even when my son is running it works well. Unfortunately it's not as good for video and even when it keeps tracking the subject, it's not very smooth and quite distracting. But for stills it's actually pretty nice (and i'm a former Sony and Canon user so I can compare with their af system).

I think it's great. I find that I have more trouble with my own vision than I did with focus peaking accuracy. When I use the EVF, nailing focus is quite easy. When I run on a tripod or gimbal, the internal screen, as good as it is, is simply too small, so I'm almost always using my Ninja V then anyways.

I could seem them releasing a firmware update for the S1 and S1H to readjust the product segments. Otherwise this S5 is stepping on the S1’s toes so to speak.
If they adjust the S1 up in features then the S1H would need a price drop or a firmware.

It's really true. Or just charge an extra $1000 and put in a fan and have unlimited recording times. People would have bought it. I would have bought it and then probably would have bought a Canon cinema camera (the ones they are trying to protect) to go along with it once the RF versions are released.
Instead, I think I'll stick with Panasonic for awhile.

Whenever someone defends the R5 because of "45MP" remind them that the R6 is just 20MP and has the same issues.

As an engineer myself, I hear your arguments. Ask yourself this as you try to calculate plausible thermal resistance transformations. Isn't this just too damn complicated?
I have never had such a difficult time with thermal management in any design I've done.
Artificial firmware limitations are what's the culprit. Of course, if Canon does fix it in firmware, they will say it's a bug, which is a definite lie.

So I just tried recording externally with R5 screen off.  (Using the R5 battery, with no cards in camera)
This was indoors in a cool room.
I started the recording on the Ninja at 09:14
I stopped the recording at 10:15
Recorded 4K HQ continuously for 1hr and 1 minute with no overheat warning on the R5 screen, and no overheat shutdown through the duration of that hour.
I immediately shut camera down, then unplugged the HDMI cable, and removed battery.
I then reinserted the battery and put in the CFexpress card, turned camera on and overheat counter said I could record 15 minutes.

Yes. I agree. But let's be real. We are dealing with Canon here. I am 99.9999999% sure that will never happen.

Honestly, whether it's incompetence or intentional, the R5 should be reason enough for people to cease supporting this company until they get their shit together.
There are companies that value their customers. Reward them instead.

    Imagine that Canon boardroom meeting.
"Let's create an 8K beast with little RS, RAW video, IBIS, our best auto focus ever... And then cripple it and use overheating to blame it!"
"You're a fucking genius, man. LET'S DO IT!"

    Same here with a Fuji 56mm f1.2
    It was in mint condition.
Purchaser came back about a week after receiving it and said they thought it had been dropped and was damaged/not working properly.
    Complete BS.
Ebay made me take it back.
Kept it for a while and then sold it on to a UK dealer who confirmed 'mint'.
With ebay, you have to stick to not selling it outside of them or take the risks.

I've never used ebay to sell anything due to stories like yours. I only use Craigslist, only accept cash, and only meet in person. Craigslist has its own long list of problems and you will deal with some of the biggest time wasters ever, but when it's a cash only in person transaction the scammer and returns problems are non existent. I sold my 5DIII, some lenses, and a couple of drones this way.

I sold my GH5S on eBay with the PanaLeica 12-60, a battery grip and 5 OEM batteries for $1800. I had a dozen picks of the camera, the sensor, the lens from and rear elements and the camera LCD. I was running an auction with the Or Best Offer option, and someone reached out to me with a buy it now for $1800, so I took it, as I was trying to fund an S1H purchase. After a week of receiving my camera, he complained that the unit was not as described, and wanted to send it back even though I said there were no returns! I said what was wrong with the camera, and he said there was a scratch on the bottom of the camera near the tripod mount!

Ebay forced me to accept the return, and this fuck effectively got a free two week rental out of my camera!
Ebay can eat ass juice for all I care.

    The answer is no.
No designated anamorphic mode that will lets you preview the desqeeuzed image.  Also, the IBIS will not take the anamorphic lens into account. I'm afraid only the S1H can do that. Or the GH5 and GH5-s 🙂

You could literally post a frame from R5 or Arri Alexa, say it's a Sony A7siii frame and someone would say the color isnt that good and that something is wrong with the skin tones.

I tried selling some stuff on EBay several years back. Ever single winning bid was a scammer trying to get me to ship the product before payment cleared.
That was the last time I typed eBay.com into my address bar.
