Robert Collins got a reaction from Geoff CB in Hollywood Reporter - "In firing James Gunn, Disney hurts all of Hollywood"
One thing I do feel quite strongly about this 'mess' is that Disney holds a lot of responsibility for it. (And it is a 'mess' because noone comes out looking good in this episode.)
Let's take a look at their statement....
"The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him," said Disney chairman Alan Horn in a statement obtained by USA TODAY.
The key word here is 'discovered'. It makes it sound as though these statements were hidden in a black box underneath his mattress and 'discovered' in some police raid. In reality his 'tweets' were in 'plain sight' and 'public record'.
So Disney doesnt have a leg to stand on.....
    Either...
    1. Really Disney doesnt care much about what views/jokes/insults etc their employees have historically posted on their twitter feed (in which case they are hypocritical for claiming they are 'indefensible and inconsistent' with their values...)
    2. Or, and this is much worse in my opinion, they claim the moral high ground but are so incompetent  that they havent bothered checking (due diligence) his social media accounts before appointing him to spend US$100m+ of shareholder funds directing their movies.

Robert Collins got a reaction from IronFilm in Panasonic preparing production of full frame sensor for 2020?
I dont quite understand what particular video features people are looking for 'medium format' to add.
    * Medium format is usually associated with very high mega-pixel cameras which are not the greatest starting point for video
    * The Sony sensors (and they are pretty much all Sony sensors) have slow readout speeds meaning jello
    * ...and they are not yet BSI so despite the larger sensor, low light isnt much improved...
    *  Medium format lenses do not tend to be very fast so you cant really get shallower DOF than FF
I can definitely understand why someone who owns a medium format camera for stills would like to see better video but I dont really see how it would end up generating better video than what we can expect to see in FF.

Still you can take an A7riii which is FF 42mp, stick on a 100-400 and then 2x crop it to 800mm and still have 11mp from an M43 sized portion of the sensor!!

It's not just about sensor size. Some of these companies are gonna need to bring something different to the market. Whether that be something to do with the ergonomics, sensor design or lens design. I would love one of these companies to bring out a very compact full frame camera along with very compact, but still fast glass. I'm talking l39/r39 sized lenses.  Some of us aren't that interested in edge to edge sharpness or flare control etc.

Robert Collins got a reaction from IronFilm in Another victim of the Joke Police - James Gunn
From today's Guardian 'One 4Chan user justified sharing the video created by Harmon – who has been a vocal critic of the US president, Donald Trump – as retribution for the downfall of Roseanne Barr: “If they get to take scalps for someone making racist jokes, we get to take scalps for them making paedophilia joke.”
Most of this has nothing to do with PC culture, it is more to do with the internet giving every keyboard warrior access to a loudspeaker.

WOW. Really? Can you state a single instance in the past 100 years where a combination of 3% growth with a 5% fiscal deficit has ever turned out 'well' for the US economy???? (Or the Greek economy for that matter.)
    (admittedly getting seriously off topic)

I think that is just for stills. I dont even think they have DMF in video mode.
@jonpais 1. Well you could put focus magnify on a custom function button. 2. I am willing to bet (never used the Sony FE 85 1.8) that you will get better stabilization with the Batis 85 (my favorite video lens) because of the built in OIS - it still wont be up to Panasonic though.

Purely speculating. But I think it is very likely that Canon will put FF in its existing EF-M for APSC. The throat diameter of EF-M is 47mm which is wider than Sony E mount. This would also give an (ongoing) upgrade path from APSC to FF for mirrorless buyers.

I dont agree with the first point at all - in fact I havent bothered reading his 'jokes' because whether they are funny or not I think is irrelevant. And I definitely dont think you should sack a film director because his jokes arent funny.
The second point is far more salient. What it comes down to is this.  There are many things we say to our friends - call it pub talk - which can be enjoyed between us because we are friends and we know each other. But it is ill-advised/stupid/problematic to transfer your 'pub talk' to the internet because it is both bound to be taken out of context and likely to cause offense.
Afterall, there are some things that you say to your mates that you dont say to your grandmother. And if your response to that is 'not really, you dont know my grandmother' - I would say 'exactly'.

I think this a good point. Brits have a very dry sense of humor and they also consider that 'jokes about pedos sort of makes you a pedo' a very strange and false equivalence.
But it is dangerous territory. I have just been watching Sacha Baron Cohen's 'who is America?' and I laughed so much it bought tears to my eyes. Others, however, think he should be thrown out of the US and are threatening to cancel their Showtime subscription.
So I also feel that Disney is perfectly entitled to sack Gunn if he is damaging their brand. Take Ricky Gervais - who used to insult the audience at the Emmies - even he would say 'well if they find it offensive, they wont invite me back, will they?'

What system do you cut on?
That Synology Nas is a good unit. Fill it with 8 drives in a raid 10 config and it will be plenty fast as long as you install a 10gbe card in it and use a 10gbe to thunderbolt adaptor. Using the 1gbe connections will not give you the speed you need. Do you need to share the data on it with other users?

I have always thought that Twitter was a very bad idea.
I mean taking the first thought that comes into your head, immortalizing it on the internet where it can be taken out of context by random strangers, is virtually guaranteed to end badly at some point or another.....

I'm surprised that no-one has made a cooler for the MBP.  Considering that these computers use the case as a heatsink, all you would have to do is make a platform to put it on that gets a good thermal couple to the bottom and then have some way of getting rid of that heat elsewhere.
Things like these would have some effect:

but even something like a larger aluminium heatsink would probably get a better thermocouple, especially if you shaped it to fit snugly, and then you could have a much larger surface area underneath that with fans.
This might seem a bit ridiculous, but eGPUs only make commercial sense because they improve the speed of your computer, which lessening the thermal throttling will also do, and installing some fans and a heatsink is a lot cheaper than having an entire device with a video card in it!

Samsung returning to produce sensors for the camera manufacturers makes a lot of sense. I doubt the major brands enjoy being dependent on Sony (an increasingly aggressive competitor) and would 'prefer' to buy from an 'independent' manufacturer. In that respect Samsung returning to make cameras would actually be counterproductive because they would, like Sony, become a competitor rather than independent supplier.
Ultimately I think Sony's success in the camera business will come at a cost to their (camera) sensor business. I see a lot of the brands moving from Sony when they eventually get some decent competition either from Samsung, Tower Jazz or whoever.

The XPS 9570 still suffers from CPU and GPU throttling when run hard (like my 9560) but as it has Thunderbolt it can use an external GPU. These slim laptops are just not designed to deal with the thermal stress of sustained high CPU and GPU rates but if you can offload this work to an external box it may solve it. I have a 4 disk RAID0 on my 9560 via Thunderbolt which gives me 500 mbps data rates but the Thunderbolt chip side of the laptop gets very hot. If you have a big raid storage box and eGPU + laptop you have to ask yourself why are you not using a small desktop ( micro ATX form factor) PC and a Screen......
