Thpriest reacted to jase in An adventure into the Panasonic GX85/80 begins - and a look at the Leica Nocticron for Micro Four Thirds
First time I am doing a project in 4k:
This cam continues to amaze me.

Since both card slots are UHS-II U3 I would only assume you can record at max on both at the same time.
If the GH5 does gain at the least a 1/2 stop DR, and a 1/2 stop low light ability, and focus is better, it has to be the bargain of the year for Video shooters.
But that is a lot to hope for. And that is what it will take for me to buy it. But damn it sure does have some nice specs! Panasonic has really not held anything back on this thing. It is probably the very best they can do for a m4/3 camera with present technology.

We were recording live events for decades. I do that so many times every year and I have never use a A7s for such a job, usually these venues have some kind of lighting anyway, or else they do not want the crowds to see anything.
I am just amazed that people these days believe that with no IBIS, and no A7s, you are doomed to oblivion.
I face every day a market that expects from one person to do lights, camera, sound, edit, sound editing, grading, driving, droning, everything. It is not right.

Niii! Exactly. I thought the old Sony slogan of "Wolf nipple chips, get them while they're hot! They're lovely!" was a bit close to the bone (don't try to put an a6300 in you shirt pocket after shooting 4k for 15mins...er.. seconds).

The biggest clusterfuck of 2016 was Syria, where thousands of people, including many photo/video journalists, died and the world did absolutely nothing.

There is a very deep power struggle going on right now. Let's be thankful so far. The other side wants WW3. The other side wants division. Let's unite for peace. Let's envision the world we want to create and make it reality.

If you don't mind manual focus then the SLR Magics and Voigtlanders are nice.
I picked up a 12mm 1.6t SLR Magic and a Voitlander 25mm 0.95 secondhand and they seem to fit and compliment the philosophy of m43. They are small but solid.
I have come from Canon and I wanted a system that weighs less and takes up less room.

Thanks Panasonic for finding 4 dudes for your promo video. I guess girls don't know how to use cameras.

Nice hair tones...

Nice shots and editing. The soundtrack lacked punch, intensity and ambient sounds IMHO.

ah! So it's not like a manual lens! Cool!

Thought some of those skin tones looked a bit plasticy.
Apart from that it looked great.

Any news on being able to magnify the image to check focus while recording? That would be a big plus!

At film school, your professors are usually not actively working in the field.
So this WanderingDP - interview young up and coming DPs who share unique perspectives and ideas is incredibly valuable. I learned a ton from the interview with Chayse Irvin, super talented young dp who shot the Lemonade Beyonce film.

Thpriest got a reaction from Jimmy in What camera do you want to see a review of next?
There's some interesting footage from the oly shot by a Finnish guy, Janne Amunét:
Looks pretty good to me but he looks like he really knows what he's doing!
I'd like to see how the camera compares to the GX85 and G80 and whether the Olympus is better overall for video.

Oh God... I spend too much time here. I have learned a lot, but I hope nobody takes my amount of likes to mean anything more than I have too much time on my hands... because I don't know shit!!!

Seems like I should try every single picture profile, and then decide which one suits my needs best. Until now, I just had to grab my BMPCC and hit the record button. No need to think twice about the settings. The GX80 will finally give me 4K, but it will also take me back to the time when I got my GH2 and had to mess around with the settings. Back then, Andrew released the very helpful GH2 guide, which finally stopped me from messing around with the settings, as he already did it for me.
Anyway, as there is obviously no consensus on which GX80 picture profile is well-balanced and gradable to some degree, I will have to find the time to experiment on my own. Some say that iDynamic is useful, others say it will just make the noise more obvious. Some say that contrast and saturation set to -5 will "tame" the image, others say it will do nothing but reduce color information.
It would be great if you experienced GX80 users could share your settings, so that we can compare them and see what they might have in common. Just a short overview of the settings you rely on. That would be very helpful. Thanks everyone!

I have been wondering about the settings too. I found that dialling down the NR made everything over 800iso very noisy and having to use Neat Video can get a bit tedious.
I've been thinking about using the custom settings and dialling things down in post a wee bit as it doesn't seem to be working for me the other way round.
It'd be interesting to hear different thoughts.

Please show us what you're getting... for you to have such a knee-jerk reaction, it must be good! Seriously, we could all benefit from what others think the best way to use the GX80 is rather than making it a echo chamber.

Thank you for finally commenting more on what seems to be one the most popular EOSHD threads since starting your forum. We're all eager to hear your settings... possibly even willing to even pay for them... I believe the consensus (in this thread) was indeed the ones I said above: Standard or Natural (-5,-5,-5,0), many of us commenting on A3G3 WB adjustments. Your contention is the contrast setting... IMO lowering the contrast minimized the hot spots found on skin and other situations. I'm interested in what you have to offer. Maybe you can shoot some video and tell us what you think like your recent Sony video which I found very instructive. Many of us have been asking for a long time for your input.

Thpriest reacted to Dave Maze in Wedding videography advice
Shoot everything at 1080p. Don't shoot yourself in the foot with 4K. Although I do like shooting ceremonies at 4K for the post crop.
Canon skin tones are the best. Even a used 70d would be better than Sony IMO. The C100 mk1 and 2 are the best cameras for weddings IMO. I've shot a few recently with C100 mk1 and my 1DC and it's super nice. Here's a teaser I did with 1DC/ C100 combo:
You MUST MUST MUST remember that wedding films are CONSUMER PRODUCTS. DONT EVER FORGET THIS. THIS IS 6 years of experience and over 300 weddings shot of experience talking to you. These people aren't professional filmmakers. They aren't producers. They aren't film snobs. All they want is pretty shots of them on their big day. If you shot it all with a t2i and a 50mm 1.8 they would love it because it looks "cinematic". Don't get caught up with the gear when it comes to shooting weddings. That's the biggest waste of time and money. The couples simply don't give a shit.
I hope you enjoy it. Weddings are a fantastic way to get lots of experience and become a ninja shooter

Looks pretty good. I was using the Prolost Neutral settings that were popular for Canon DSLRs... for Panasonic maybe it's Prolost Natural...
But basically turn contrast, sharpening and noise reduction all the way down and then saturation half way. I did not touch the curves or iDynamic.
Where did you notice a benefit with iDynamic?
I also started shooting everything at 4400 Kelvin. I found it was a good all around WB number that worked better than AWB, but still gave me the leeway to correct/push either way in post without too much effort.
I've posted this before, but it gives you a quick idea of my results. I colored it with FilmConvert...
I have been going through a lot of my equipment and deciding what to keep and sell. Every time I think I am definitely selling the GX85, I'll pick it up and the floaty image brings me back to it.
I am primarily a hobbyist with a few short/feature film ideas I'd like to work on in the next year. Each film has its own look and needs, so I have been testing and testing a bunch of cameras. One of my ideas is a B&W project, with my preliminary tests, the GX85's L-Monochrome is excellent... so much so I have ordered the Rokinon 12mm cine lens (I'm done with lens adapters) to give the GX85 one last test to see if it would be a good option for this upcoming project.
Anyway, I love seeing the results the members of the forum are getting with this camera!!!

Thpriest reacted to dkovie in How to save the consumer camera: DON'T!
Please explain why it's somehow a point of pride to say "I stopped reading when".
Choosing to hear only what you like to hear is a sign of ignorance! "I stopped reading when" means that you were unwilling to give a writer the benefit of doubt.
Do you stop reading a novel 75% of the way and then say that it had a terrible ending? Same logic applies here.
