GH5S has unlimited recording which is important if you are filming live music. No IBIS if that is needed which is a bummer. If you already have M43 lenses and cameras maybe it'd be better picking up a used GH5S or GH5 for now and wait until things settle down (Covid and the camera market!) before deciding on a change. I picked one up for 1290€ a year ago and you really can't go wrong at that sort of price because it's a great camera for video.
    Sorry about your Dad.

    You nailed it.
I see the G9 at $999 almost everywhere. In terms of hardware it is superior to the GH5, has better photo capabilities, better low light imaging, much better burst modes, HiRes Mode, much better IBIS, better design etc.
After the S5 at under $2000 with free Vlog(?), Panasonic should just resume the GH lineup, with a price between the G9 and GH series, and preferably much closer to G9.
Smartphone sensors are getting bigger and their zoom and low light capabilities are growing exponentially. That's the biggest competition to ILCs. And FF cameras at $2000 are the other issue.
Panasonic needs to move fast. Outline the roadmap instead of sounding confused in interviews (IR interview).

This isn't a big deal at all, you can just have smart variable re-scaling, like the JVC LS200 does!
    You can set it manually.
Doesn't have to be 7.4K in S35, it could be a bit lower resolution (6K) and still be 4K when in 4/3" mode.
Was using that so much today with my Sony PMW-F3 while doing voxpops on the street, it is so handy to be able to do it while recording.

m43 needs a companion f1.7 zoom.  Maybe 30-60mm or longer.

For MFT and GH6 to survive now that everyone has caught up with the GH-series but in full-frame (10-bit, All-I, 60fps in 4k, etc) is to offer things that will take another 3-4 years for other manufacturers to do (especially since Canon and Sony have just put out their mirrorless video flagships):
    - high frame rates (for sure), including 120-180fps in 4k at good bit rates (and not insane ones like R5). Maybe even 480fps in HD?
    - e-ND - they HAVE to have internal ND filters.
    - GH5s or better low light - just to at least be in the same ballpark as Super35/full-frame (meaning usable to 6400 ISO, which is 98% of use cases)
    - Internal raw or at least some form of 12-bit compression that gets you close to raw quality (BM Raw?)
    - Great XLR capabilities - perhaps a better version of the grip that is also dual XLRs? I would prefer this than the hotshoe one so there is still a place to mount a microphone without a cage (or to keep your monitor centered over camera).
    - Global Shutter or miniscule rolling shutter - MFT has always been good for this, but now to take it a step further.
    - $1799 or lower - Has to be cheaper than entry-level full-frame and something like the XT3.
    - Tof AF? - I don't care a ton about AF (always seems to fail me in critical moments with Canon/Sony so I don't use it), but so many people care A LOT, that they have to do something.
    - Insanely good IBIS - This has always been Panasonic's strong suit, but Canon has caught up. So 8-10 stops of IBIS and improved mechanism for walking forward to create close-to-gimbal like movement.
Pair this camera with the 10-25mm f1.7 and video shooters are set.

There is no way a GH6 is not coming.
There are too many lenses and m43 users around, and they are perfectly happy with their cameras. They do not even have to split the sales with Olympus now.
I could guess that 2019-2020 was the years of S cameras, 2021 will be the year of m43, in no way they are going to release another full frame camera any time soon (I mean, after the S5 will be officially announced and everything) and that would be...at least weird, if not straight negative. Already too many S1 owners feel a little "betrayed".
I am expecting a GH6 announcement in early 2021, and probably a release soon after. GH5 and the rest are good enough for another 8-10 months, then I will be expecting a slow (normal maybe) release of 2-3 years. Maybe just 2 or 3 models are enough for m43.
I am one of those that believe that 8K is too soon, I wouldn't say no to 5K or 6K for re-framing/downscaling/stabilizing purposes, just to be safe for the next few years.

Perhaps with the delay of the Summer Olympics to July 2021 gave some breathing room for Panasonic to re-evaluate the capabilities.
When they launched the S camera’s the official company line was “Panasonic is on track for 8K by 2020”.
I assumed we would have seen it in a FF S series camera, but with the release of the S5 and the past 24MP S1H release it hasn’t come to pass.
The spirit of the GH MFT cameras has always been “the first with 4K...the first with 4K 60p...”. Or in more broad terms to push the limits. However, we have see a gigantic leap in FF technology. We have 8K, we have 4K120p, all offered in 10-bit 420 or better, with excellent rolling shutter performance.
At this point I would rather see the first internal ND solution in a mirrorless camera than 8K from a MFT sensor. I would rather see a very solid 6K60p and 4K120p. I would rather have internal RAW or ProRes HQ straight from the camera. Give us dual gain ISO from GH5S with IBIS. Give us some more absolutely unique 1.7 prime zooms like the 10-25 f/1.7 A 25-50 f/1.7 would pair nicely indeed and give us a native mount lens with AF that would compete with the classic speedbooster Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 f/1.8 setups. Besides, we have all the other focal lengths and aperture combinations already covered in the extensive MFT lens ecosystem. People that complain about these big and heavy MFT lenses don’t need yet another 12-35 f2.8 standard zoom!
All of those features above actually improve the shooting experience with the camera. 6K is a nice middle ground, offering excellent 4K delivery and makes a “8K” anamorphic headline grabber still possible, while also offering a high resolution HFR not seen in any other mirrorless camera. Besides, I could shoot 6K60p and use a superscaler from BM Resolve or Topaz and essential get a 8K60p video and very few people would be the wiser.
All the new “hybrid” cameras aren’t really hybrids at all. The R5/R6 are photo first cameras. They shit the bed for video. The Sony A7SIII is an excellent video mirrorless camera but its 12MP sensor hampers it for mixed photo work. Besides, I think Blackmagic is more of a threat they now have a S35 12K sensor shooting at 60p! Imagine something similar in a new pocket 6K camera with modular mount...ouch!
The A7IV will be a true hybrid but will probably max out at 4K60p video and still have a 24MP sensor, which is well within the competing range for 20MP+ MFT sensors for photo work.
And they don’t even have to use a 4:3 sensor if that don’t want to. JVC has proved that (although for photo I really like the 4:3 aspect ratio vs 3:2 a lot)!
    Anyway, long rambling post.

It will definitely be another GH camera.
There are too many happy GH5 users waiting for a mix of GH5 and GH5S with more megapixels (24-28 will do) for the perfect hybrid m43.
Olympus is out of the way and there are still unlimited m43 lenses and bodies in the wild that need a new body for 2021.
If they can keep a state of the art hybrid machine closer to 1500$ than 2000 mark, then they can have an instant hit. Mark my words!
Even for 1799$, depending the specs, can be the best camera to have for the less money.
I haven't been convinced from Fuji just yet and Panasonic has already delivered to us workhorse video mirrorless cameras for cheap. The lens selection is probably EF worthy right now and there are a lot of other companies going the m43 way to keep the mount afloat for at least a decade more.
The success of the Pocket4K and EZ cameras proves that for the right price, people do not have a problem with a smaller sensor. You can have m43 lenses on a cheap cine camera, hybrid, even the 8K Sharp that is coming!
I believe Panasonic has everything in house to build the perfect m43 tool, only shadow is the autofocus capabilities, we can not pretend that it doesn't exist in 2020. Even me, shooting video manually (even with C cameras) all the time, I want my next hybrid to have good AF just in case and to explore the new possibilities. Touch AF is a must also (I am using that reliably on my NX for years).
The "excuse" of a small sensor can keep the price low as well without fear for canibalizing their full frame series, because most people want full frame, whatever that means.

This seems like a strong release by Panasonic.
I am not sure if this has been posted already with the (almost) full specs
    http://thenewcamera.com/tag/panasonic-s5/
AF is going to be THE issue, price rumored to be 1800$ which is close to 2000€, not that cheap but very capable it seems.
It is not just the poor relative of the S series, there are significant characteristics to make it appealing to a lot of customers.
I am not sure why Panasonic sticks to this AF technology and even if they change, how much time they will need to catch up..
I still have to see the "new" GH to have a complete knowledge of the market and choose accordingly.
I was quite "shocked" when I saw the sales percentages and Panasonic is at just 4.7% with Fuji. I was expecting a bit more from Pana and their more diverse line up.

in 2020 I want 10bit codec. I am not going to have this discussion again, but if you do not need "broadcast ready codecs", then everything if fine, skip this comment.
I am not going to spend 8000 euros, or more for another personal camera - because that is how 6500$ translates to Europe - and then I have to rent for broadcasted, or better projects, thank you very much, I stay with GH5 and Pocket cameras for lesser projects and rent when I want to go higher.
If you are a youtuber, then even your 4 years old phone has enough specs and there are multiple solutions under 500$ to better those specs.
I rarely need raw, or any raw, but 8bit was alright 10 years ago..
I am still waiting for a C100mkII replacement, this is one of the most populat Canon cameras ever, where is the next one? R200 certainly is not.
Sony and Panasonic offer XLR thingies that give their video centric mirrorless exactly the same sound options as a video camera (Sony records 4ch and can take the Sony wireless natively) and the only difference is the internal ND, if you get IBIS, better or similar sensor, much better codecs, smaller price tag and you miss only the internal ND, then most people will go with the better everything and they will stick one of the many vND we all have. As simple as that, there is a limit when a video camera is better than a mirrorless and in Europe you will have probably to go above 8000euros for a Canon one.

I might be interested in the XC20 to replace my Sony AX100 camcorder.
Tempted by the 10 or 15 over the last few years but neither really had enough to warrant the expense and there hasn’t been anything else on the market either with ‘enough’.
I only use it for one purpose and that is static full ceremony and speeches at weddings, but would welcome something sub 1500)/£/euros that did better low light.
Also for purely personal reasons, I’d rather being using something that looks a bit more pro than a camcorder. Just because.
So will be interested to see what any XC20 might be.

Honestly if Panasonic created a camera with the following I would be completely sold, all I need for quite some time to come:
4k60p 10 bit S1H dynamic range and color Native duel ISO Super 35 or full frame sensor Built in NDs h.265 and prores codecs IBIS Duel pixal autofocus I could honestly care less about 6k or 8k, raw and the like unless it was a good compressed raw like r3d.  A rich cinematic image, built in NDs and a reliable body would be top of my list.

I currently shoot with GH5s and speedboosters and they are the closest things I have ever gotten to that list, really just add NDs, good auto focus, nail down the color science and low light a bit more like the GH5s but with IBIS and they would have the "perfect" camera in my book.

Well done for getting the opportunity to talk with Panasonic! This is a great example of one of the many reasons your forum is of great value to the community.
Commitment to and future direction of MFT, specially the GH line (more video centric, eND, zoom in to check focus etc). Taking ergonomic elements of the C100 and XC10 (rotating grip with joystick, ND placement, etc) could well make a compelling argument to stick with MFT. Also whether they are considering longer f1.7  MFT zooms. Compatibility of V-Log, colours etc accross all Panasonic lines (GH, S, Varicam and DVX).

Has Panasonic’s plans for MFT changed or shifted direction with the news of Olympus selling its imaging division?
How does Panasonic plan to be competitive in the mirrorless market now that we are seeing the competition coming to market with more advanced mirrorless cameras and competing on features like advanced AF technologies,  10-bit 4:2:2, and internal RAW recording options?
Do they see advancements in  computational photography possibly breathing new life into their crop sensor cameras? If phones can do it why not mirrorless cameras?
Will we finally get full V-Log in a future GH camera that will help to unify the workflow and capture process across the LUMIX line?
Has Panasonic considered offering internal RAW and/or ProRes recording in its cinema flavored mirrorless cameras (GH5S, S1H) , even as a paid upgrade? A fairly large number of people would be happy to pay for the convenience if the price is right.
Panasonic has been the pioneer in bringing professional level features and capabilities to their mirrorless ILC cameras. What qualities or engineering strengths do you see helping push the LUMIX camera brand forward (especially since many competing cameras are all built around the same Sony sensor tech) in a very turbulent market?
By far, the number one complaint about LUMIX cameras is the autofocus performance. Panasonic’s DfD offers best in class contrast detection type focusing but it falls short of what people have come to expect from cameras using flavors of phase detection. How does Panasonic plan to stay competitive in the AF feature arena?
Anything exciting for LUMIX customers in the future that they want to talk a little bit about?

Questions that come to mind are the obvious, and a few not so obvious.
What is the future of the GH line and MFT?  Will there be a GH6, and if so, when?
Will Panasoninc implement RAW in their cameras?
Will we ever get great AF in their cameras?
How will they respond to the R5 and the upcoming Sony A7S II successor?
Why does the GH5 require a paid upgrade to receive vLog, when a much cheaper camera like the G100 gets it for free?
Will possible future cameras like the GH6 and S2 require paid updates for extra functions?  What is the criteria in selecting what is a paid upgrade and what is free.  Given for example Blackmagic gave users a free upgrade for BRAW.
How does Panasonic feel the loss of Olympus affect their investment in MFT?
