    I feel the pain mate.
As well as this virus turning life upside down, it has also exacerbated personal issues in relationships and with my mental wellbeing to the point that everything is like a sludge of clay.
I strongly agree with your views on internet and truth. When people are using memes as their “news” source, there’s a big problem. Then comes the nonsensical behaviour of our Governments. Nothing can be trusted but we trust in our own stupidity.
Social media and internet control is a pandemic in itself, that’s got out of control. It’s a crazy illness that affects us deeply, so Zuckerberg makes money at the expense of your health.
The best course of action is to dramatically minimise internet usage and consumption, which I know it’s hard is your job depends on it. But make your usage more meaningful and useful to you, instead of “being the product” that feeds the monster.
I still come to EOSHD as you can have an open discussion. There’s very little of that going on, so keep at it. Someone has to.

I think the question is do you need 4k/120, the amazing AF and access to a wider selection of lenses? Two Panasonic S1s here but I'm seriously thinking of adding an SIII just for those things. I don't think the image quality will necessarily be as good but probably not too far off. I love my S1s in pretty much every way (other than a lack of 3k/60 10-bit which is coming in an update).

I used the A7SIII, the S5 and the S1. I returned the SIII because of the noise reduction, colors, IBIS, MP and sharpness.
I don't need the 120fps 4K 1.1x and the fast AF-C. My S1 and S5 with the S Pro 2.8 have very fast AF and good enough AF-C. And even if Sony has more lenses I prefer the Lumix ones. I had/have the 24-70mm GM, 70-200mm GM and 50mm Zeiss Sony 1.4, the Lumix Pro equivalent lenses are better (sharpness, bokeh and 3D pop).

About the S5, it's a great camera, but the S1 is even better (slightly better IBIS, better EVF, 6K internal next year etc ...) !

Today's AF test, posted below, but otherwise I ain't saying nothing at this time other than...pretty much SOOC, lockdown scruffy beard, mostly making a muppet of myself.
We are only interested in the actual AF and whether there is any pulsing and not the colour or if it's 'cinematic as fuck' etc.

    As expected, they were 24mm f3.5, the 35mm f2 and 65mm f2.
Good to see them releasing more lenses for L mount at least that are compact and good value for money in the style of the 40mm f2.8.
The 35mm f2 is definitely going to find a home on my Fp.

Panasonic 85mm f1.8 has turned up.
First impressions, it's light, compact and well built.
Second impression is that the AF seems marginally better than the kit lens that was 'OK' and much (MUCH) better than the Sigma 56mm f1.4
In fact, I am cancelling my order for the Sigma 16mm and 30mm f1.4's and probably returning the 56mm f1.4
I'm going to do some more thorough tests tomorrow but it seems that it's true that the L Mount Alliance may share a lens mount, but they don't all share their protocols as much as they might.
I don't need ultra-amazing AF, but there are times when I need it to work and it 'seems' at least, that Panasonic glass with Panasonic bodies is the way to go.
So back to my original plan and will await the announcement of the Panasonic 24, 35 and 50mm f1.8's and work with that set instead.
Maybe even 1 less body as I am actually quite impressed with the IBIS and it's only a total of less than 10 minutes I actually need a monopod for dual photo/video at the same time and that will save me the cost of one full body.
But the new 85 is looking good. But then I thought the Sigma 56 was...but I have done a little more testing before opening my gob this time 😉

I tried one single outdoor tracking sequence from around 50 feet away (face tracking mode) and it locked on body immediately, went to face as the subject got nearer and then eye at about 10 feet.
Pre new firmware, if that is going to make any difference...
    Locks and tracks nicely indoors.
I will give it a proper run this afternoon with one of my unwilling subjects but it’s looking good.
Will I use it for stills?
No, but only because I moved from Fuji to the L Mount system for a reason and that is so I could continue to shoot S35 video and full frame stills in one system.
Will I shoot any APSC stills at all?
Yes actually, but not with any of the Sigma APSC lenses and I will be getting all 3 as part of a single camera/3 lens dedicated video set up.
I made a final decision on my stills lenses late last night after wrestling over every possible combination and came to the following conclusion and that is neither the f2.8’s or the big/heavy f1.4’s (such as the Sigma 105) are going to work for me.
Instead, I am going to weld a Sigma 35mm f1.4 to one body and the new Sigma 85mm f1.4 to another, but when I need to (ceremonies and speeches) flick to crop mode to get a ‘130mm’ in camera crop.
I need small and light and fast and portable as possible and for my needs, I have cracked it now.
    Final line up:

Static video = S5 + Sigma 30mm f1.4 + tripod + power bank. This unit for ceremony & speeches only otherwise 20-60mm kit lens goes on and unit lives in my belt as my wide angle stills lens.
Filming = S5 + Sigma 16mm f1.4 (dancing), Sigma 56mm f1.4 (indoor) and Pan 85mm f1.8 (outdoor) giving me 4K 50p focal lengths equivalent to: 24, 84 and 127.5mm. This unit lives on the freestanding monopod.
Stills = pair of S5’s mated to the Sigma 35mm f1.4 and Sigma 85mm f1.4 which can be extended in crop mode to 127.5mm. I also have the super-wide 20mm focal width of the first unit all day except ceremony & speeches when I don’t need it anyway.
4 bodies + 7 lenses and it’s all still one backpack and one small camera bag with the monopod in hand, including my tiny folding carbon tripod, light stand, lighting, audio and drone.
Phew. A lot harder than I thought but I remain convinced there is no better system for my needs right now than the combination of L Mount Sigma glass with S5 bodies.

Ok, so here is my stupid question of the day:
If most weddings are outdoors, why not a GH5 for your third camera (for the ceremony / speeches) instead of an S1H?
It should last over an hour, right?
    I've never used a GH5 so I don't know either way.

I've gotten used to the focus peaking on the S1 but I find it not as good as the GH5. Color options seem more limited and it doesn't feel as precise.

Amazing video and cinematography, not one thing seems off to me, I guess sometimes people just see what they want to see. They did a lot of speed ramping which isn't for everyone, but this wasn't supposed to be a corporate video; it really showcased the slow motion capabilities of the S5. What I found really interesting is they even used 1080P 120FPS for some of the shots which most people are saying is trash due to the bitrate; clearly pretty much anything is useable if you work within its limitations, have a good story, and know your camera.

The entire video was flawless IMO and really showcased what this camera can do; they also managed to upscale the 1080P back to 4K without it being obvious which parts were which. Really well done. This video makes me look at 1080P out of this camera in a whole different way and I may try it one day if I want 120FPS.

Everything is a matter of opinion, but on one hand you have dozens of 'reviewers/content creators' unboxing a product before (sometimes) going outside and waving it about...and then you have filmmakers:
Entirely shot on the S5 with the 20-60mm f3.5-5.6 and the 85mm f1.8
    YouTube won't do it justice...

You can find S1 second hand with some warranty left for 1500 E/$. So even you have to pay for the V-Log upgrade it is still a very good deal.
Panasonic S5 vs S1. In my opinion it boils down to one or two major differences.
        1. Do you want a smaller lighter camera or not. How important this is to you. How often you will use it on a gimbal ?
        2. Are you planning to record most of the time internally 10bit 4:2:2 or externally to ProRes RAW. If it is externally then S1 is the better option. It has Full Size HDMI. For S5 you'll have to add a bracket and a clamp for the micro HDMI cable. Once you do this (and have HDMI cable plugged in) flip screen becomes unusable, rotation is blocked by the HDMI cable. And S5 weight and size with bracket and clamp equals S1.
Looked at several clips from S1 shot at internal  V-Log 10bit 4:2:2. Skin tone come always reddish after color space transform in Resolve and Red color is a little bit off in general. So it requires some work at post. Not quite as nice as BMPCC 4K BRAW. So for me plan is to use external recorder most of the time. And in this case S1 seems to be the better option. For internal recording would probably choose S5. Flip screen is useful and Micro HDMI doesn't matter.
Downloadable V-Log clips at first two links. Panasonic S1H compared to Sigma FP at third link, how red color looks on both (after 2:12, compared at 3:00)

I'm still thinking about maybe switching to Sony or Canon for better AF in video cause I am often shooting as a one man band, and AF would be very appreciated. But I can't help thinking that my Panasonic S1H and even my newest S5 after the future firmware has still the edge in video besides AF and slow motion:
    - much better color science
    - much better IBIS
    - better video tools (waveform, vectorscope, shutter angle, etc)
    - a unique LCD implementation (tilt and swivel)
    - 6K (though I don't really use it that much but still)
    - very useful S35 crop mode in 4k and even pixel pixel in 1080p
    - no overheating whatsoever
    - better tactile implementation (Sony improved it a lot but still not the same quality as Panasonic and Canon)
    - 4k DCI
    - better ergonomics (arguably Panasonic has the best ergonomics of all the hybrid full frame cameras, and I say this as a former A7III and Canon EOS R owner)
    - Possibility to choose linear focusing and even the length throw with native lenses from Panasonic and Sigma recently wich is not possible on Sony lenses
    - better hybrid usability if you need to shoot stills and video
    - Timecode
    - Real anamorphic recording modes
    - ProRes RAW up to 5.9K (up to 4k in the Sony)
    - Etc.

So yeah I'd be glad to have a better AF, but truly giving up all those things I listed before, it feels like I would downgrade in some ways.
@andrewreid what do you think of the comparison. As of now, what would you choose between those two?

Hola Marla, whilst the GH5 is a fantastic camera it's biggest weak spot is autofocus in video mode. If continuous autofocus in video is the number 1 necessity for you then I'd look to Sony or Canon cameras (each have their weak spots as well but autofocus isn't one of them!).

It does look great in low iso and with sharp glass, but it's not as sharp as the fullframe 6k downsampled to 4k where the detail just pops off the screen, in lowlight the noise is approximately 2/3 of stop noisier in my experience.

The camera automatically switches to APSC mode when using S35 glass at least if the glass is modern with electronics. Honestly S35 mode looks great though.

Btw the autofocus is surprisingly a bit faster with the 18-135 compared to my tamron 24-70 g2, even though on a native ef camera the 18-135 is a lot slower then the tamron. Also apsc is limited 12mp, so the resolution you get out of your photos won't be great, same for 4k video, where it is only a one to one readout, so the noise and resolution isn't gonna be the best.
  21. Thanks
Thpriest reacted to herein2020 in Panasonic S5 User Experience
I did the same thing, I got the Sigma adapter and can now use all of my EF mount FF lenses with no problem on the S5 and out of all of my lenses including APS-C lenses only the EF-S 10-22mm does not work.
The focus peaking kind of sucks, very hard to see and for me a lot of the time its just not visible at all and combine that with the fact you can't zoom in to check focus while recording  and the focusing situation when using EF lenses in general isn't that great; I am sure the native lens experience is better. As long as you aren't filming with a razor thin depth of field and not filming anything fast paced its workable but definitely not great.

I've been working with the GH5 for the past few years and the fastest lenses I could get were F0.95 MFT which translates into F2.8, so these lenses look great to me. I do wish they had a 14mm or 16mm prime on the way for real estate work, but other than that, the 24mm for video and the 50mm for portraits might pull me further into the "alliance".  If the 24mm outperforms my current Canon EF 24mm for sharpness and usability then I may go for it.

I tested the Canon EF-S 10-22mm; and holy sh*t I stand corrected @Lux Shots, the Sigma 18-35mm EF-S lens does work on the S5, but not the Canon EF-S 10-22mm. I also tested the Canon EF-S 18-135 F3.5-F5.6 and it worked also.  Maybe the EF-S 10-22mm does not report that it is a crop sensor lens and the rest of them do which is a real bummer because that 10-22mm would have become my real estate video lens. I'm still not sure why manually selecting APS-C mode does not make the EF-S 10-22mm work unless its a crop factor thing that gets adjusted when the lens reports its crop factor to the Sigma EF adapter.
This little camera just never ceases to amaze me; Panasonic has got to be the best kept secret out there. All YouTubbers will ever talk about is the AF, there's so many more important things to a camera system than just AF.

Well so far, the Panasonic lenses have been pretty stellar in their performance and even though these are designed to be a more compact and cheaper option, I am pretty sure they are going to so much more than great value for money.
I'm pretty happy at 600 euros and mid 300 grams considering the new Sigma f1.4 version is about double the price and weight (albeit f1.4 vs f1.8).
And f1.4 anyway (never mind f1.0 etc), - increasing focus difficulties and there is not that much real world difference in DOF or light gathering between f1.4 and f1.8.
I've been used to shooting Fuji f2's which have a DOF equivalent wide open of more like f3, so am looking forward to the full-frame combo of sensor and f1.8 for both lower light capability and shallower DOF.
Hopefully some of these new 85's will have been out for review these last few weeks and the announcement on the 5th won't be just that, but some actual third party reviews etc.
Pity I can't get out and shoot anything though right now as my next 3 jobs have been put on ice due to lockdown here in France. Just as I was getting going again. Can you just fuck off Covid 🤬
