TwoScoops reacted to mercer in Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
Maybe it will have a Micro 4/3 sensor. Maybe a swappable mount. I am very excited for this but I doubt it will be in the original price bracket.

This will never happen.
A BM cinema camera by definition is about DR and color science.
The Studio Cameras are rec 709 burned in signals.
This is the next gen Pocket meaning cinema DR and color science in 4k. That's a given.

TwoScoops reacted to elgabogomez in How Many Stops of Dynamic Range Needed for Cinematic Look?
I remember people complaining about “mtv look” in the 90s and how it wasn’t cinema like... then run Lola run came to cinema and since that worked for the story, it became accepted. At one point, a well choreographed scene like the restaurant scene in goodfellas was considered the ultimate cinematic goal, now you can do it relatively easy with a small camera and a glidecam or a gimbal. So I think cinematic is when it works for the story/style. Whether that is movement or tripod shot, it depends on the meaning, not specific technique. Paranormal activity was very video looking and that was the point.

Taking a look at the Yedlin footage what seems interesting is how little dynamic range is in the 'final output' when compared to how much dynamic range is in the scene.
Note the limited DR in the histogram.
The footage is also very desaturated. (The camera angle and limited color gamut also seems cinematic.)
Take a vaguely similar shot with a digital camera. Straight out of camera it looks something like this... (A7r3)
Note that this has bags more dynamic range - it fills the entire histogram and the colors are much more saturated. And that it looks 'digital'
However, if you make a tonal adjustment (see below) which compresses the dynamic range - see histogram and tone curve (by raising the blacks and lowering the whites). And reduce the saturation (see below), the photo appears more cinematic...
So my feeling is having quite a low dynamic range in your final output is quite key to a cinematic look. Of course you can achieve that with a high dynamic range scene given enough processing leeway (either in camera or post.) Or alternatively, you could achieve it with an iphone given enough additional lighting equipment I would imagine.

@jonpais
Getting back to the original question you asked about DR, and to sort of add to the point of being "cinematic" in general...
I think it really boils down to, "not looking like video."
Think of all the BAD qualities of broadcast video and of early video cameras.
Surely limited DR was part of that, but there were other technical (and artistic) things that scream "VIDEO." I think as the video format became the option for lower budget content creaters, there is just a sort of mental connection that low-budget-looking productions are video, and more polished productions are cinematic.
One way to look at this is to ask yourself "What ISN'T cinematic???"
To me, cinematic ISN'T:
- blown highlights / horrible rolloff
- oversharpened
- compressed skin tones
Add on to that artistic features that were amateurish.

That is her with her Nikon , and a light meter in her hand. I took that with my Nikon F2 Photomic.

You guys should just go out and buy an entry level Canon then. Why spend thousands upon thousands of dollars on cameras and native lenses? I mean, it’s all up to the operator, right?
Obviously, I was being sarcastic there and obviously all of the points that talent and skill will make any camera look good are valid and probably the most important ingredient to a cinematic image.
Now if only Hollywood Line Producers were reading this thread, then every film from this point on could be shot on a (insert consumer camera here)

Agreed, but at least you now know the worst case scenario. And I used to say everything looks cinematic in slowmo. This video has proved me wrong.

Interesting, I really think all-i frames probably make a difference as well.

TwoScoops reacted to mercer in Motion Cadence
Do you have Popeye’s Chicken in the UK? It’s pretty good, but there is something strange happening in its chemical makeup... it literally smells exactly the same going in as it does coming out. And let me tell you, the motion cadence as you run to the toilet is not very cinematic.

Yeah that “safari” video does nothing good for the GH5s. In comparison, it looks like the Nikon D850 “safari” video was shot on an Alexa.

You could also use the free Adobe DNG converter as well, just in case you don't buy into the Adobe subscription plan.

Wow, that's a great update!

I didn't see a movement difference either - but the real point is we don't know what he did for the shutter - if he did something, he is hiding that fact. If he did nothing, it suggests the 180-rule is bogus. A scientific principle is you don't reject established theory with one badly-documented experiment. I would love it for the 180-rule to be wrong, since neither action cams nor cell phones can easily adhere to it and it would eschew the need for ND filters on serious cameras. Hardly likely.

TwoScoops reacted to graphicnatured in BMPC 4k vs. GH5
Couldn't agree more. I love what I see from the GH5(s) but they still don't have the image those little BMs do. I still want a GH5s for ease and portability and will surely buy one because it is a huge step up from their older GH series. Back to the point though. Every time I'm on a shoot and see the image my Micro produces on my monitor I'm reminded of just how incredible these cheap little boxes are.

That sounds more like @mercer wish list more than reality LoL.
I mean I hope like hell it is true with no big crop in 4k. Canon could Own the prosumer market if they just came out with a camera that is as good as the Sony A7 mk III. It doesn't have to be super groundbreaking, it just has to have 4k in it and not cost 3400 damn dollars. How the hell hard would that be to do. Shit easy as hell. Panasonic has been doing it for years on the cheap. Jesus just make it so. Hell I would buy one tomorrow just for the Colors Science and DPAF. Who the hell wouldn't.

Usage of codec inside the camera processing while capturing and outside of computer in delivery process are not the same. Bluray distributed movies often have no more than 20-30 Mbps - do you think that result will be the same if footages had been captured at the same bitrate?

TwoScoops reacted to mercer in Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera
Good find, I’ve never seen this one before but it may just be the best example of what the Pocket and Micro are capable of. If I saw that in a theatre and someone told me it was shot on an Alexa, I would find absolutely no reason to doubt them. The way the contrast was handled, is just gorgeous. Damn. I’ve been searching for a slow motion camera for a while... hmm... I wonder how hard it would be to match it with 5D3 ML Raw footage for slow motion insert shots?
