12K is more a marketing meme for the camera.
Its real point is that it doesn't have a 2x2 Bayer matrix (as in my avatar on the left), but a 3x3 RGB matrix where all three colors are equally present.
That means you will be able to downsample the 12K sensor signal into a 4K signal with no color interpolation by binning 3x3 pixels into one pixel. That's the equivalent of a 3-chip camera or Foveon sensor. Clean 4K with 4:4:4 color sampling and zero debayering artefacts.
That's the real point (and news) of this camera. 12K is just marketing fodder for bloggers and influencers.

Wow.  I went to bed last night and woke up to this..
I predicted an 8K FF camera as a semi-ridiculous joke, but I had no idea that it would turn out not audacious enough!!
My comments in the 1080p thread are interesting in this context though.  We are playing the megapixel game, but very few are giving high-bitrates to downscaled resolutions, but if this is giving 4K RAW downscaled from 12K then the image should be spectacular, while not requiring the computer to be able to push 12K pixels around.
This would make it a hugely flexible camera - yes you can shoot 12K RAW if the project warrants it, but you can also shoot 4K RAW with no crop at great bitrates and bit depths for projects where post needs to be more cost effective.
Also, if the colour science is great, this could put them on the map as a serious challenge to ARRI / RED.  Then they'd have to nail the reliability in order to actually take market share, but it's a shot across the bow nonetheless.
BM are thinking big - they do it with Resolve every year, did it with the pocket cameras since the OG Pocket, and now at the high-end too.

It is a good image. I think you would have to be a bit deluded not to think that. That was never gonna be the problem with this camera. With clog 3 it will punch above its weight-class in terms of image and resolution like the s1h. However, file sizes and codec is an issue for all these japanese cameras once we start getting into better quality codecs and higher frame rates. These companies are just too conservative to give us anything of worth or to innovate like braw. So they'll just give you bumps to the specs year on year, which is the name of the game.
In terms of a pure hybrid camera, nothing beats the r5 at the moment, but the question is whether it is worth it price given it is in effect a 4k 30p camera, which can use other modes on a limited basis.

The footage looks really good indeed. But that latest official statement by Canon is a joke. Did they actually suggested to use an external fan? Lol. Now people are making jokes about wet towels wrapped around R5.
They are aggressively marketing this body as an 8K camera for the past six months so it’s quite fair for anyone to expect, well… a camera. Great tool, bad marketing.

Its been suggested this is a good travel camera due to features and its small size.  I must admit I've never packed a large fan when off travelling.
Its funny how some say they are glad Canon didn't add an internal fan, as it keeps the camera smaller; only for Canon to suggest using an external one.  🙄

The problem with your logic is that all of the shortcomings are clear, well defined and can be easily worked around. I shoot with the GH5 nearly daily, everyone knows you need to nail the WB, do whatever you can to not shoot HDR scenes, keep the ISO below 1600, and always use MF....simple, clear concise and if you stick to those rules you can get quality footage every time. Oh and if you fail to follow any of those rules a simple retake can fix the issue or you may be close enough to fix it in post.
    Overheating is completely different territory where you have no idea if a hot day in direct sunlight with multiple takes will render your camera a brick, if the fact you just pulled it out of a 120 degree car will prevent it from even turning on, and when it does overheat there is no workaround.....you are sitting around waiting for it to cool. No one is complaining that there is a limit (me least of all), the problem is with thermal limits there is no way to know what is going to push it over the edge;
Will 20 or 30 rapid takes make it overheat? Will pulling it out of a hot car make it overheat within seconds vs minutes? Wil turning off AF and IS make it take longer to overheat? Will shooting a photography session on a hot day then switching to video push it over the edge? And why can't you use a $4000 camera or a $2500 camera for simple interviews? Who has lowered the expectations bar so low that you will accept the fact that your hybrid camera can't even shoot a 30 min event or interview, we are not talking hours like you are trying to imply; I've had simple interviews need multiple 20min takes and the GH5 was perfect for this. The S1H can, the S1 can, the GH5 can, even the EOS R can, and I'm sure the Sony's can...why does Canon's latest hybrid flagships get a pass?
Do you not see the difference yet in thermal problems vs easy to workaround well documented and well known limitations?

Because at the end of the day image quality matters.
Crippled specs is the same as paper specs.  A camera that's good on paper but the image quality doesn't match.
It's clear that lots of cameras passed the GH5 in color and image quality years ago.  The Gh5 is a suckers camera in 2020.  You see people on Facebook boards jumping into buy a $1,697 GH5 from Adorm$$ because the specs checks all the boxes.
Smartphones shoot 4k and even 8K.   Go use those because I'm sure RAW will be next.

This doesn't make any sense at all. Crippled specs? That thing has every feasible recording option in conjunction with the tech it carries and is a proven workhorse camera. Canon should do their homework on what Panasonic achieved 4 years ago and deliver a better product.

Apologies if this comes across a bit harsh Mr Super 8 but your ridiculous obsession with the gh5 and blaiming of BM cameras on other threads due to your own lack of knowledge, do you no favours I'm afraid.
I don't think I've acome across anyone who consistently talks as much nonsense as you. Other than maybe your lovely President.
Still can't tell if its intentional trolling or you actually believe what you are saying. Kind of hope it's the former for your own sake

    It's not even a campaign
    Simply about reporting the facts
None of the major coverage initially mentioned any overheating issues. People were pre-ordering the camera under a false pretence.
So I had to put the facts on the blog rather than have that info stay hidden in the CVP video. You seem to be suggesting that I should shut up?
It's $3900 + tax. I expect it to do what a $3900 Panasonic S1H does - active cooling, 4K 10bit 422 unlimited record times. 6K or 8K is just a bonus. The RAW file sizes are unmanageable for longer record times so the overheating in that mode is only the secondary problem!
Of course, you can produce lovely work with the EOS R5.
It's will just be a shame about the moment on that shoot where great stuff is being captured up to the point where NOTHING is being captured because the camera got too warm.

You are right Δημήτρη. Probably Fuji will build this aps-c camera (with great colour science) in the form of the X-H2. The suitable sensor for that is already available by Sony. Nevertheless they do need some decent video glass that will not be ridiculously overpriced , a very Canon-like future of Fuji pricing.

This seems like a nice addition to Canon’s R series but i have to agree with Andrew that many things here do seem quite wrong. At least according to my own needs i can’t see this camera fitting any shooting scenario.
It seems like a camera that was designed to work like a RED Monstro but only for 20 minutes per session. I can’t imagine a shooting session where 8K DCI recording is needed but overheating is not an issue at all.
In hotter environments (and our planet has become quite hot lately) this translates to roughly 10 minutes of shooting. And we are talking about a combo that costs over 7.000 bucks if you count in a native lens plus some CFexpress cards. This feels like an OM Magic Lantern implementation to me (yep i have taken that route too).
I can’t blame Canon for trying to deliver a nice prosumer camera but i feel that this Full Frame - Infinite K madness is leading the industry away from our actual needs. There is more than enough tech around for any company to build a nice APSC camera with proper AF, IBIS, 4K DCI, decent autonomy and nice ergonomics. Who needs more in this price range (2000-4000$) after all?

Hi Andrew. Yes the new speaker design is sweet but don’t get carried away by the sound. Those machines are a nightmare for audio editing tasks. There are 2 huge threads on MacRumors and many videos on YT about the intense audio popping that can be noticed inside Logic, FCPX and many other apps.
I am experiencing this issue myself on a 2019 15 inch unit and the only solution is to use an external audio interface (or headphones). Apple is aware of this issue for almost 10 months now and has done nothing to fix it.
