DR can be a tad subjective, depending on how you measure it, and RED are well known for overstating on the generous side their DR

Awe Jesus H Christ! Do we really need more shade in this community?
@flip21 Show a little respect man. Kisaha has 801 likes here to your 36. The numbers don't lie.
As far as your question about ISO, why in god's holy name would you want to use ISO 25600? At that level you can kiss resolution and saturation goodbye.
Ain't nobody got time fo' dat.

The human eye can see at least 20 stops of dynamic range which is why we can easily say view a sunset without the sun blowing out and see more detail in the shadows than a camera can produce.
There are different ways of measuring dynamic range - it is not an exact science. So for instance, Sony can claim 15 stops of DR for its A73 and that might well be right by the way they measure it. DXOmark will almost certainly score it at around 14 stops using their method. By Bill Claff's measurements it is 11.6 stops (slightly below the A7R3 at 11.76)
    http://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm
The Red cameras do score 'extraordinary' high DR results.
    https://www.dxomark.com/red-helium-8k-dxomark-sensor-score-108-a-new-all-time-high-score2/
They claim 16.5+ stops of DR but DXOmark measures it 15.2 stops (similar to say Sony claiming 15 stops and DXO measuring at 14).
What makes this 'extraordinary' is that the RED cameras are not even FF but are outperforming the best FF cameras (which makes no sense.)
Clearly Red hasnt magically improved QE of sensors relative to say Sony. DXOmark says they are using 'temporal noise reduction' which is a fancy way of saying they are combining multiple images and processing them for better image quality.
As an example you could take your camera and do bracketing -2,0,+2 and combine them in post which would increase the amount of dynamic range you could capture. What Red is effectively doing is equivalent to this but doing the post processing in camera.

100% with you here! Exactly how I feel. With video, I'm much more confident in my opinions and work since I have more experience. Photography, I'm more prone to insecurity, but that will change with time.
On another note, photography is a whole lotta fun. Similar in some aspects to video, but different enough to make it interesting. I feel like doing both keeps each discipline from feeling stale..... and not worrying about audio is a DREAM sometimes.

You're taken for a ride every day of your life. We all are, in one area or another or many altogether. Ever been in a romantic relationship? 99% off them are predicated off of psychological and emotional codependency. Believe your nation's government truly has your best interests at heart? Heard of the world bank?
Look, if we get fooled or suckered, it wouldn't be the first time. We are all suckers, this is just another day another dollar. I could think of worse things to get suckered into.

I think I'm one of the 'oldest' nx supporters on this forum. I bought nx100 back in late 2011 and since then I bought nx200, 300 and finally nx1 in feb 2015. So it's just been 3 years that I've been using nx1. I love it and along with s lenses it's really powerful.

The news about dng recording is simply great. I followed the hacking scene from day 0 and this would be a tremendous achievement for a system which is proving to be the longest lasting reigning apsc on the market as far as I'm concerned. Kudos to you if you can make this public.

Even without RAW output, you still have a great system on your hands. You can get some great coverage with 3 cams that will all match up perfectly.

Well, that would be the cleverest strategy I've seen to date.
I'm going to suspend disbelief on this one though. The guy is highlighting some very technical approaches in PM that have me seriously thinking this is legit. Either way, the kid seems pretty brilliant.

Some shade isn't completely unwarranted. As powerful as HEVC is over h.264, it's still a lossy distribution codec at the end of the day, in 8bit no less. If more can be drawn out of the camera, that's a win in my book. Of course, it will depend on the workflow and reliability. I'm sure some here are willing to meet those requirements.

Why? The NX gear you already own (I saw 2 of the NX1 in the other thread), doesn't limit you at all - unless you are a coal mine, tunnel or night-life documentarist, shooting permanently in horrible lighting conditions (without the possibility to light up your scenes / models), where the NX1 doesn't shine. Or a Hollywood DOP or blockbuster filmer - but in this case there are some production cameras, beeing probably a better option than a NX1.
Getting out by day some hours and taking some beautiful shots with your NX1, could probably satisfy you more than the belief you were limited by gear. I'm not a physician and don't aim to give any medical advice, but after some hours of challenging shooting, you could sleep better at night. I would just try to get more shooting fun than better/more gear or specs.
    Have fun.
BTW: @Matthew Hartman will get his hands first on some samples. After discussing, criticism, proposals, I will put the footage down here, so you guys could take a "first look" and evaluate it from your POV. Technical or even workflow aspects are not as important as aesthetical/IQ considerations for the first...

What was the point of shooting at 60fps if you weren't going to conform it into slow mo? There is no other point in using that frame rate as 30fps is plenty suitable.
    @dbp
Samsung doesn't sell mojo. They sell technology. The mojo is up to the person behind the camera.
It's a cellphone with a suitable point n shoot camera slapped on the back of it. The smartphone has very little to do with the premise of a phone in the traditional sense. What they truly are is tiny computers with phone capabilities.

Are you GenX? Boomer? (I'm GenX) Only the older 30 something GenY would have any familiarity with a look that is different than this. My two GenY and one GenZ children have only known this type of video look on a practical level. They're well acclimated to this look as this is the quentesential look of most social media. If we're comparing the look and feel of this camera on that level then you can certainly understand their enthusiasm.
But I get ya bro. A clean technical image so clean that looks pretty sterile and general. But remember, a lot of this has to also do with the subject matter. Most average people don't know how to tell a visual story, they just document.

Gimbals are tools. I do not particular "love" gimbals, or drones, or IBIS, but in the right moment they add to production values and to the moving images language.
I would say that no more than 5-10%(at the most) are anything other than tripod and monopod shots, in most the shots I can influence.
Disclaimer: recently directors "order" the use of IBIS at 100% rate, 50% drones usage, and less of gimbals (because drones and IBIS are cheap, but we usually rent Ronin gimbals, and it costs money and time to setup, and they hate those kind of needs!).
None 1 of those people are worth anything other than our pity, but they are been paid 10 times, or more than me!

Wasn't ML released on April 1st?
I've been in contact with Arikhan. If this is a joke he's been rather convincing both publically and privately. If it turns out to be a bluff, it is what it is, we got played, that's the tradition of April Fool's.
I think whatever the situation, you can't denie this has many of us intrigued, including yourself. A great many of us have felt through out the years of onwership and use that the NX1 had more technical potential then Samsung enabled. I think our very own Andrew Reid would agree. This possible revelation plays right into the hands of these speculations, and if true, its not only good for existing and potential NX1 owners, but the broader mirrorless market altogether. This would perk up the likes Panasonic, Sony and Fuji for sure. It would be a serious call to action.

My guess is it's doing 8/10 bits. But even with 8bit RAW, the image should be much more malleable in post and recover shadows and highlights better, you control the amount of denoising and don't have to worry about nailing perfect WB or using log. All this is very welcome over H.265 imo.

Well that did it. Now my obsessive curiosity just kicked in. ARGH!
If this is true and the record time is decent (get ready for large and fast SD cards) this renders this camera up there with the top of the line cinema cams. That image sensor has a 14bit 6.5k RAW signal.
