I love getting out and doing this. I have so many bits and pieces from over the years that don’t have a rhyme or reason. I think it’s super important to the creative part of your mind, to keep up on the craft for the love of the crafts sake. Otherwise it gets stale really fast. People do this with music all of the time, pick up your instrument and just play. We need to remember to do it with video too.

YouTuber Christian Maté Grab recently posted this video, which I think is very interesting, is hugely authentic, and quite frankly, brave.
He talks about shooting footage for yourself, for no pre-defined or pre-imagined purpose, just of things that happen in your normal life.  This is what he's called "C-Roll".
He talks about how he has recently struggled with quite debilitating mental health issues / depression and the roll that C-Roll played in helping him recover from that state.
The idea isn't new to those of us old enough to remember film cameras (he's probably not) and to a certain extent he's just discovered home videos, but I think it's an interesting and important point for those of us who may have adapted to only thinking of shooting for commercial purposes or for likes and followers, especially as the world gets crazier with the hype of social media and the slow but inevitable upset of basically the entire film-making and professional video industry.
    Here's the video:
    Do you shoot personal footage?

I had to cut the 5th run of 17 short to 10 minutes, battery empty icon was flashing. Doing a 6th run with a fully charged LP-E6NH and letting the overheating timer crash and lock me out. Doing the JPEG immediately after. If it reaches 20 minutes, if it gives more we might surpass 100 minutes.
5th run also peaking at 62C. It's an all day 8K camera, people.

I have been a long-time follower of Roger's blog at Lens Rentals, which gives us not just a rare glimpse inside camera gear, but also an expert eye on construction quality, weather sealing and the repairability of it all when you drop it! To celebrate Roger's latest article I had the chance to put some questions his way, to dive into his thoughts on the 600mm, the potential for a 'universal' mirrorless mount and of course the EOS R5 overheating controversy.

    IT WORKS!!!
This is with a Sony UHS-II card, R5 recording 8K 23.98p IPB in roughly 680Mbps. I will try some other modes next, but I trust this will work in any mode available on SD. Pity that RAW does not work with this neatest of tricks. You guys are geniuses!

Katrikura reacted to Emanuel in My Canon EOS R5 recording 8K video 50 minutes straight
"I tested the temperatures of the R5 with a Seek Thermal camera, on the outside, as well as of the memory cards and card slot at the time of changing the CFexpress cards, in prior tests as well as during the recording of this video. In my opinion, no unusual high temperatures were measured. The Ninja V gets a lot hotter, and not only at its heatsink, the screen of the Ninja V feels much hotter than the R5 ever has on any of its surfaces, the past month. The R5 has felt the hottest, not while shooting video, but while shooting slightly more than 8000 photos in an hour on the electronic 20 fps setting with RAW+jpeg, yet not hotter than my D850 felt through the years after similar abuse. My GH5 is much hotter after an hour of recording, also at its memory card bay. My 2011 Macbook Pro and 2012 Alienware laptops have felt a lot hotter a lot of the time, and they are still doing fine. The 4K proxies of the 8K RAW edit just blisteringly fast on the 2011 Macbook Pro, better than the native a7R4 MP4's on my 8 core Intel with RTX2080Ti, I create the proxies on the latter though, quickly, and the rendering too of course."

"All this 8K bashing is a bit silly, I find, years and years we worked with proxies, but a slower native MP4 native editing is very much in vogue right now, I am apparently slow to follow the latest fashion; nobody is perfect. I switched to 1080p when many said, who can watch this in 1080p, you're crazy, same with 3D, same with 4K, now with 8K. If you treat the 8K RAW as a photographer, you all of a sudden have a 30 FPS 35 megapixel stills camera with a buffer of 30.000 images that clears immediately, that is, if you need to spray and pray for 17 minutes in one go, some photographer."

    100% agreed. Glad I am not alone : )

Andrew, you have a hell of quality of members on the board, man... I even think people are not enough aware this is the most helpful filmmaking corner on Internet as far as tech issues concerns.
My gratitude and most fair reason why I am here :- )

It has yet to be proven that 8K RAW goes indefinitely, but yes it is very impressive hardware.
There may be thermal throttling or lock-ups somewhere during long sessions, we don't know - but what is now proven without a shadow of a doubt is how artificial the 15 minute limit is and how it counts down on a timer rather than a high maximum temperature cut off point.
My opinion gets stronger every day that all this is about segmenting it from the Cinema EOS cameras.
But we all know this is a stupid business decision, because most Cinema EOS camera owners wanted to buy an EOS R5 as a b-cam, second body, third body, handheld rig, you name it.
In my opinion Canon seems to want to sell every professional shooter a minimum of 2 very expensive cameras for the same shoot - one single hybrid camera at $4000 plus very expensive high margin optics is not enough it seems. Shoot stills? Buy EOS R5. Shoot video? Buy C500 Mark II. Shoot both. Buy both.
Yup it is terrible for us who just want to buy the EOS R5 for it's amazing hardware and cinematic images.
We're always the one to get screwed it seems.
This is why Canon, in my opinion, has been losing video users for years.
It is faulty thinking, throughout the company. I don't know which part of Canon is most to blame - USA or Japan? Both? EOS or Cinema? Maybe both? Or do the EOS guys secretly really dislike the politics that the Cinema business has brought to the company and the restrictions it has placed on their products and all the stupid segmentation?
    Either way, they must change.
I am up to 1 hour of 8K H.265 which is very special from a 45MP full frame sensor.
It makes it even more frustrating that Canon has turned it into a lemon then!
If Canon chose to lie to their customers about limitations on a $700 consumer camera that was boring and unexciting, the passion wouldn't quite be as strong to uncover the truth and fix it... That it is a very expensive flagship camera and the first of its kind in the world, makes it a hugely emotional topic for me & you, and rightly so.

Ah Sony are just another bunch of opportunists really, using the suffering of a rival to drum up some more sales - I'm no great fan of the A7S III.
I think this is a watershed moment, and I hope it encourages people to spend their money differently.
Maybe buy more from Sigma, who are family owned.
Let's put business ethics in the spotlight.
Let's see what really goes on behind closed doors and what they try to hide from their customers.

Here is a VFX heavy short film I shot on the Samsung NX1 years ago, finally decided to finish it and get it online so here it is!  The last scene is the canon T3i
all lenses used are the rokinon 24mm f1.4 and Canon 50mm f1.4
Watching in 4k is strongly recommended as YouTube loves compressing things

Yeah, I don't pay $4000 to have to reset a cripple clock or disassemble the body.
    Over to you Canon!
(That doesn't mean to say we shouldn't continue to explore and investigate. I find the workarounds shed light on the camera's design and behaviour, which allows us to hold Canon to account with hard evidence).

On several occasions I have indicated that he will have to make a short documentary about this defective product, a product of the protection policies that Canon has with its line of film cameras. I see it difficult for Canon to apologize, since there is an army of complacent (or paid) youtubers and this audiovisual piece would remain for posterity, reminding us that we must be critical as consumers and showing how fanaticism for brands allows this type of bad practices. A short documentary that serves as an audiovisual memory.

You are talking informed armchair shite.
YOU have not taken a single shot with YOUR EOS R5 and reported anything here of value.
YOU have not taken the back off like some people, and even measured internal temps with an infrared thermometer.
A heavy load for an Intel CPU is 90C. I have a laptop that registers even 95C during rendering. If the CPU goes above this it will throttle to maintain 90C-95C. Only if the temperature carries on rising, is it a risk. 90C is fine. Fans and heatsinks in a PC are only there to maintain stable temperatures - to dissipate heat - for very hot running components that use a lot of energy. A smartphone does not have a fan, as the energy consumption is lower and efficiency far higher - these kind of CPUs are RISC as is the ARM based CPU in the EOS R5 and R6.
The EOS R5 maintains a stable temperature below 65C in all video modes - this is not conjecture, it shows in the PCB temperature sensor and EXIF metadata, infrared thermometer tests, and just plain old application of common sense. If the EOS R5 can run at "heavy load" in 8K for 10 mins... what's so special about the 20 min point at same temperature that it has to shut off... Nothing. It's a timer. And the recovery times are even more artificial.
If your laptop can render 8K for 20 mins at 65C it means the temps are stable and plateau at a comfortable level. Same with a camera CPU.

MagicLantern does not produce any modification to the original firmware, it remains intact. What it does is add functions through a firmware that works in addition to the existing one, is hosted on the card and can be deleted at any time.

No worries, I promise to keep it secret. No one will know it from my side. I can't say the same for the others here, I'm sorry (Cannot doesn't, but we will on their behalf, deal? ;- )
