    This first shot is spectacular.
Bet it looks even better in full res with the fine noise texture.
    @QuickHitRecord mentioned a Sony A350 above.
This was my first ever non-Canon DSLR back in 2008.
I now have two. My advice to everyone is go and seek one out before they're gone forever.
It has one of the final Sony CCD sensors ever made, and is pretty high res for the era - about 14 megapixel
Image quality is just flat out gorgeous AND it has live view AND phase-detect AF in live view 🙂
It is better than the Leica M8, has even more mojo.
    And it is $90!

Pentax K-1 is a great underestimated camera. The only problem is slow af. But if you are lucky you can do someting like this:

2 days ago, hearing about the tragic death of Ben Kweller's son (very sad news indeed - Ben almost died from monoxide carbon intoxication when rising to success, stopped his career for 9 years, and was just coming back to form, and is a very gentle guy), I remembered that I shot videos from some song in his Rio's concert in 2012 with a Vivitar Series 1 105mm f/2.5 Macro made by Kiron.

Never used it as a macro, but as a tele...maybe is the sharpest old lens that I have, tied with the Contax-Zeiss 135mm f/2.8. In fact, is so sharp that it looks like a modern lens. Got it for around US$90, with original box, just returned from CLA - it is pristine, without a single dust spec, to this day. Good times.

This was the video - GH2 with Sanity hack, no Ibis or manual focus aids. Vimeo dropped the resolution to 720p, the original file is much sharper. Another remembering - the GH2 mics were superb, the audio is from the on board mics, only with a little EQ.

And all my thoughts to Ben - after this gig he spent hours talking with the fans, taking photos, always with a smile in his face. Hope that that smile returns soon.

The idea of editorial independence was enshrined in the BBC’s founding Royal Charter in 1927, which stated the corporation should be “independent in all matters of internal control.” This was a way of ensuring the BBC’s coverage was not subject to political interference or pressure from any external sources such as the government.
Now the editorial independence of the BBC is at best completely neutered by the Conservative Party. Many talented journalists have left. In many respects the best news organisation in the world has taken to sourcing stories purely from Twitter and social media.

I have these conversations all the time the last couple of years.
The energy and time to "educate" the customer is so tiring right now, and usually they have a photo or video on their phone which is good enough for them and their social media "campaign", or after a couple of meetings and a half a dozen phone calls everything concludes "just do some drone shots"!

I read a few days ago that Sony changed the Imaging Edge app to Creators app, and that then connects to the Creators Cloud. Very creative indeed. It's been happening for some time but only now feels like it's happening all at once.

It has certainly become a calling card of younger millennials and older gen z to present themselves as "multi-disciplined". One can't just be a photographer anymore, but a photographer, videographer, model, talent agent, etc. It's not just social media in the creative sector of the economy that has ruined us but work culture in general. In a capitalist dominant world where the few with resources ensure that the many without resources know that they are replaceable, what other outcome could you expect. Make yourself irreplaceable and you'll prosper, right?

Regarding older millennials, like myself, and younger gen z I believe; millennials have grown tired of busting their ass to chase a carrot they'll never eat and gen z have seen enough from the older generations to know that the hustle is a fruitless effort. This is all coming from mine own American perspective. I know this forum spans many cultures and generations. If you embrace the hustle, more power to you and I wish you the best.

As far as the "good-enough-is-good-enough" goes in the creative world, It has simply become an esthetic for the younger population and of course corporate number crunchers will happily follow suit. The current state of the arts and creative commerce tells us all we need to know. Vinyl records are outselling cds. Music is being made made in Garage Band with cheap instruments and microphones. More people will watch a Tik-Tok video that took 15 minutes to make than will watch a properly produced motion picture that took 3 years and thousands of man-hours to make. Polaroid and other film technologies are being embraced once again. As well, early digital camera technology is exploding on the secondhand market. Look at the success of the horror movie Skinamarink (2022). It was shot with an FX-6 but it looks like absolute shit . The lo-fi look is where it's at right now. Why is that? I definitely have thoughts on the subject, but I'll save everyone's eyes from continuing this rant.

True although the difference is you can be a youtuber without actually being successful or without any education/low cost.  Can't be said for astronauts or firemen. You certainly can get by with a phone camera for many applications, I mean even features have been shot on phones now. However I don't think marketing and selling is always about need. People will buy because they think they need it.

8k phone for an 8k tv, what a waste:)
Lumix G7 will look better on a 4k tv than that:)
what a waste of resources it is, all that madness of 8k from a phone on power hungry 8k tvs. whate a waste regarding energy for production, resources and power hunger when used.
my two cents. but congrats on having owned the g7. a great but humble cam. love it. classic 😊
now best video quality from cheap phones is a hot topic imo.

For me shooting narrative projects a solid 20-85 cinema lens would be amazing. 20 is just wide enough to cover most wide angle needs on S35 and 85 is long enough to cover most shots on that end.

I tend to find myself on 35mm most of the time, which I consider right in the middle. I feel it gives me enough depth without too much compression giving that almost voyeuristic look. I do like super wides occasionally even for close ups, though it can be too jarring.

I don't use super long lenses that much. I think its nice to get a POV look, like a perspective shot looking at something from afar. I did that a few times with my last project on a 120mm. Another use is trying to make a character feel more isolated. I mostly shoot narrative projects though so I guess lens choice becomes a lot more intentional.

I am currently running n gunning in South America for a family passion project. I've got an R5C, a Sennheiser G3 that I plug directly into the cam, 6 batteries, a mini stand and a basic ballhead. I brought a Zoom F3 just in case but haven't needed it bcuz the audio I'm getting plugging the G3 directly in-camera is solid. I sold a bunch of my Canon lens so I could buy/bring a 35mm RF f1.8 IS and the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 OS ART. I've been using all natural light, and figuring out subject placement day-of on the fly. Of course it helps that I'm in a place that is sunny and beautiful 24/7 - but I can tell you I was only comfortable travelling this stripped down bcuz the R5C comings with pretty much every light and visual measurement tool you need (except for timelapse). So far the interviews have looked great, grabbing b-roll has been easy (the various crop modes have also been clutch for this!) and I definitely see myself using this type of stripped down setup more often!

When our music turns rubbish and our language ugly we know there's trouble ahead. Filmmakers and photographers seem to be on the way out, to be replaced by something altogether more homogenous - the "content creator" or simply "creator". Why specialise when you can just "create stuff"?

In France during the Black Friday week, Panasonic offered 400 euros cash back, a SanDisk Extreme 1tb SSD, and an extra year of warranty for 1579 euros. The deal was available for about 2 days from selected online stores. The price sent up to 1779 with 200 euros cash back after, then 1979 euros. On this forum, people were bitching about not getting the GH6 initial deal and how Panasonic's marketing practices are suck because they didn't get the deal. Essentially, that's it.

For 'run n gun' I'd say the camera is MORE important than if you are taking the time to light.
You wan't something robust, that has most of the controls at your fingertips and allows you to plug in and control/monitor a microphone easily. You also want something that has good Image quality, a good codec and good dynamic range to handle the vast variables that Run n Gun has to deal with.
When you have more time and control over the scene, you can get away with less Dynamic Range as you can light for the camera.
I wouldn't run n gun with an iPhone but after that, C70, R5, Pocket 6K,FX30, S1, S5, GH6 etc etc are all great cameras and will not hold you back.
IDK what camera you have but if looking to buy, I'd recommend the Pocket6k Pro or G2 for it's BRAW Codec and super intuitive menus. RAW for Run n Gun is not necessary but does give you more of a chance of recovering a shot when it comes to exposure and white balance in post. There is a reason why most productions I work on shooting Alexa 'only' shoot ProRes, big crews can light accordingly so RAW is not required but for Run n Gun it comes in handy.
I also personally don't recommend AF for Run n Gun. If you have one chance to get the shot, you don't want to risk the AF losing the subject and throwing focus off wildly while it searches for it again. AF systems are getting better and better but the viewer would rather see a shot where you might lose focus momentarily and pull it back organically that a shot where AF goes crazy looking for the subject. AF has a time and place, but manual focus is my pick for Run n Gun work.
This is also why I prefer APS-C sensors, for the same light gathering, you get a slightly deeper DOF to work with that is still shallow enough to look pleasing by today's standards.
Most importantly, choose a lens that is easy to work with. For fast paced doc work, a Par focal zoom will make your live easier.

FWIW, aside from the pro stuff, I'm pretty close to being camera body agnostic now that we're into the 2020's.
My preference is to use a 40-50mm prime lens on M43.  Or 85 on FF.  It just looks more cinematic to my eye.  Anything in the "portrait" regions of focal length.  Not a fan of wide angle filming unless it's very considered shots.   I don't like a lot of different focal lengths in my videos.
DOF I prefer modest, but not ridiculously shallow.  bleh.   f4 on FF and F2'ish on m43.
I also use a tripod when I can.
Just those choices alone makes the stuff I shoot look wildly different than most 'content' online.
I've been sticking with that for awhile now.  I like it.  I shoot natural light mostly.  Learned to take advantage of the situation rather than putting up my own lighting.  For instance, I almost always shoot now by turning off the lights in a room and using window light; repositioning my camera/subjects to get the best lighting angles in those situations.
It's always funny when I turn off the lights, the client turns them back on thinking a mistake has been made "Don't you need lights?"  Nope. "The natural light from the window looks wonderful, let's give that a try."  And I turn the overheads off again.
Even a horrible office room can look decent with natural light and a little repositioning.

First off I want to caveat this with the fact that I am not an IQ purist, I am not constantly in search of that perfect camera to try to replicate Hollywood magic; instead my focus is on nearly everything but IQ. I focus on things like workflow optimization, ease of grading (the C70 wins this category hands down BTW when set to Cinema Raw LT), audio options, shooting features (IBIS, ND filters, etc), battery life, and of course above all DOES IT OVERHEAT (here the C70 wins again). IMO any modern camera above the PS bodies produces fantastic quality; the story you are trying to tell, the lenses used, and the lighting all affect quality far more than the camera body.
With that said, no, I don't think the IQ is distinguishable between the R5, R7, and C70 on YT for 95% of what I shoot. I keep the C70 in CLOG3 to match the other two to make the color grade easier. Now there is the remaining 5%; when a scene is a high DR scene, has strong highlight rolloff, or is perfectly lit and when the C70 is in CLOG2 then and only then does the C70 display enough of a quality difference to possibly be noticeable even on YT.
I think the same can be said for most camera ecosystems (BM, Sony, Panasonic, etc.).
I also briefly mentioned lenses earlier; I do think all of the cameras listed above would produce noticeable IQ improvements with "cinema" lenses; but my typical project is nowhere near the budget required to use lenses like those. The vendor's camera campaign videos produce the quality you see using the same bodies you and I purchase; but with $60K - $100K worth of rigging and a full support team. Those videos are nice to see the art of the possible (and they are hosted on YT), but achieving that look is unrealistic for most of us. I still like watching them though because they prove my point that the story, lighting, and rigging affect the quality far more than the camera body.
