180fps looks like it does suffer aliasing and moire to quite a severe level but it's great as a creative bonus.... NX1 120fps probably a bit better but that still has aliasing and moire.

You're telling me a man that won't release his taxes, won't put his holdings in a BLIND trust, constantly talks about how wealthy he is, puts gold leaf on everything, spoke in his first press conference about a 2 billion dollar deal he'd just been offered, used funds from his "charity" to buy paintings for his golf courses, doesn't want more money? His entire persona is built around being rich. That is delusion. There is never enough money for people like him. Human nature will show you there is never enough money for most people.
You can support that idiot for other reasons. But the idea that he is incorruptible because he's already rich is almost criminally stupid. He got rich by being shady as hell. "He's not a politician" != "he's not corrupt"
and if i recall, samsung officially shut down their camera division around this time in 2016. That's a clusterfuck if I've ever seen one.

The cheap stabilizers like the Glidecam, etc can give smooth shots but take a long time to balance the camera. Something like that works better for cinema-type shooting where every shot is planned and the extra time to set things up is built into the day. The other disadvantage of those type of stabilizers is they really wear out your wrists and are annoying to use for more than a few shots.
Monopods are good for stability, not so good for freedom of motion. If you imagine yourself following a character around or doing any sort of run-and-gun then these aren't a great solution. The are great if your style is to get lots of different static frames in a day and you'd like to improvise. But if your talent tends to move a bunch, or you don't know exactly what to expect then the monopod will not always be the right tool.
Gimbals obviously give great stability and the newer ones are easier to balance. Ergonomically, they do wear out your wrists and lower back because all the weight is in front of you. And unless you also want to invest in remote follow focus, then you'll have to plan your shots to always be at single focal lengths. Not a huge concern depending on what you shoot, but a limitation nonetheless.
The "holding the strap around my neck" technique works well for a couple shots, but doesn't feel good for a whole day of work. Your wrists and arms eventually tire out, and the image starts to get shaky.
If you plan on getting a shoulder rig, the key thing is to make sure it has enough weight behind the actual shoulder. A lot of the cheaper ones have a shoulder pad but require you to hold the camera up in front of you which, wait for it... wears out your wrists and lower back. If you're shooting the whole day you'll tire out and the images will start to get shaky. A properly balanced shoulder rig, with counterweights behind the shoulder, though heavier, will yield smoother shots and won't tire out your arms as much.
Shoulder rigs also have the advantage of leaving your hands relatively free to make focus adjustments, and giving you a wider range of motion. The trade-off is that you don't get magical steadicam-like shots. You get handheld. Good handheld.
Here's a piece that was shot with a Canon DSLR, and almost completely on a shoulder rig. There are a few super shaky shots in the nighttime intro that were without the rig, but pretty much everything else except the two tripod shots was with the rig. It's not steadicam, but it's smooth enough to tell the story. And you can tell from the "right there" improvisational feeling of everything that I wouldn't have been able to get most of those shots any other way:

I am wondering what the "unknnown" is...EF?!
@kinoseed  @Otto Actually, we were talking for getting a crop in NX1, NOT get rid of the crop in NX500. If you have a crop option in NX1 is like having 2 primes with one. Also, there is a variable scanning option in LS300 sensor, so from the 4K full sensor read out, you can zoom in (for full HD only ofcourse) and it is quite impressive, I have tested with Zeiss and Leica and the results are impressive, is like having a few small Leica zooms!
Now with the GH5 out we have to up our game!
Some times like these I regret quitting programming for work!

I came up with a similar option...

I took a cheap half cage made for the pocket and attached it to the micro (they have the same height dimensions) and then attached a Slik quick release base to the top of the cage and the plate to the bottom of the monitor.
Then I used a manfrotto quick release plate on the bottom of the cage and attached the base to a cheap L-Bracket... This way I can go handheld or attach it to my manfrotto tripod.
It's still a little too clunky for my taste, so I may sell the Ikan 5" monitor and pick up the newly released 3.5" monitor.
I also need to figure out a way to attach a neck strap to it.

    Concealed Carry Belts:
Please forgive some of the camera shake... I was testing out a dual camera rig. Although it got the job done, the rig needs improvement and... more importantly, I need more skill wielding it. Between the two cameras here I was able to cover most of my mistakes and got some interesting Dutch Angles. The NX1 was simply mounted to a magic arm off the rails.
The tighter shot was the BMCC 2.5K with the 50mm F/1.4 Super Takumar and a cheap speed booster. Stopped down to about F2. With the backlighting it was flare-tastic! ... I should have put on the matte-box, but we were in a hurry.
The wider shot was the NX1 with the MIR 37mm at somewhere around F4. Somehow, although Sang and Mickey where standing next to each other, I really only managed to get Sang on the left in focus. That's user error. I tried to cover the mistake up with Luma Sharpen in Resolve... good enough.
    ---
Alright, lets try picking up where I left off. Grading...
The Samsung cameras put out a solid image with plenty of detail as you would expect. I used Andrew Reid's Flat LUT on the front end in Resolve as I was setting levels. After that I dropped on Hook's Luma Sharpen... and then the Super Film Stock powergrade from Color Grading Central (oddly I don't see his Luster Grades pack for sale online anymore). I've been using that same powergrade since the beginning Carry Trainer videos. Lastly, from there I tweaked the base colors on the levels layer... nudging the reds and blues a little to my taste.
Coming out of Resolve, I rendered the video in uncompressed 10-bit 4k for finishing on Sony Vegas Pro and final output to YouTube. Vegas is much nicer for audio... and it's just what I'm use to. In case your curious, the opening was done with some simple shots feed into the Prolost Handcrank plug-in in After Effects.
It could just be the lenses, but I did like the image from the BMCC better even though it had less resolution 2.5k vs. 4k, but with 4:2:2 maybe that's debatable. 12-bit RAW still has it's advantages. They were both good, but the BMCC just looks richer with it's own kind of film grain. Once my NXL speed booster arrives, I'll try using the same 50mm Super Takumar 1.4 on both cameras. With the variation in sensor sizes, that should work-out perfectly and be a better grounds for comparison... As you can probably tell that's my favorite lens these days.
Meanwhile, with my amateur shoulder shooting I could definitely see jello issues with both sensors.
The thumbnail/cover image for the youtube video was a Macro shot with my my NX1 and the Canon FD 35-70 Macro zoom. I had the belts inside one of those light tents common for product photography.

a7S is not a very good photo camera, for quite some reasons. I would never thought of using one for photos.
The obvious solution is to wait for the GH5, it must be pretty obvious really, and maybe the best value for money being the new G85/80 (GX85/80 is even a better of a deal, but for video and ergonomics, I would prefere the G).
Have you seen the threads here about the X-T2? Great camera, I would say 60% photos - 40% video (completely unscientific numbers of  course!) and the lens options are the best in APS-C sensors. Another such camera (more photo than video) would be the new Olympus as well.
With the same money of X-T2 (+ battery grip, you would need that for video) you can buy a slightly used NX1+16-50 S 2-2.8F ( I saw one earlier on ebay with an excellent and almost 500$ flash, grip+3 batteries, the aforementioned S, + the excellent portrait 85mm 1.4f for 2400$ or something, there are similar deals almost every week). There is a whole sub-forum here about that camera and the advanced mod/hack bitrate (up to 180Mbps H265, even more for some, but 160-180 seems very stable), but of course it is a discontinued camera which complicate things, but still is a very capable hybrid with 28megapixels BSI APS-C sensor and 4K video (it can be an advantage, even for 1080p projects) and really great ergonomics and touch screen everything.

Hey gang, over the last month I upgraded my camera gear to 4K with a used NX1 and NX500 (replacing my old trusty GH2 and a6000). Since I regularly make videos for the Carry Trainer YouTube channel, I thought I'd start a thread here to share my experiences with these two camera's.
First, I tried both versions of the Samsung firmware. The Kino-Seed hack worked on my NX500, but not my NX1. Anyway, I settled on Vasile's nx-on-wake mod... it is worth the little extra work to install.
For the picture profile settings, I am generally following the recommendations from Andrew Reid's guide. For the NX1: Gamma DR, .95 Green 0-255 Luminance Level. On the NX500 I don't see any video controls... the picture profile is set to standard. As Reid suggested, I set resolution to 3840x2160 with a 24p frame rate.
Getting started testing my gear, I found my Fotodiox adapter wasn't triggering the sensor on the Samsung camera mount. Since I only use vintage manual lenses, I decided to just super glue the mount sensor down and avoid any future hassle (see attached photo). The glossy spot with the glue on the bottom of the mount is covered by the adapter, in case you were wondering about my sloppy work.
I did my first shoot with these cameras last week, Dec. 19, 2016... filming a few new Carry Trainer episodes. I work as a one-man band on multi-camera shoots, usually running two or three cameras. The classic Blackmagic Cinema Camera 2.5K remains my A Camera. The NX1 is now my B Camera... and the NX500 is the C camera. Anyway, on set I quickly discovered my NX1 couldn't handle the 210 MB bit rate. I dialed the NX1 back to 180... then it worked flawlessly for two hours. Battery life was good. Surprisingly the NX1 was only down to 50% battery at the end with 100GB of 4K video on the SD card. Meanwhile, the 64GB SD card on my NX500 filled up really fast. I was only able to use that for about half of the filming session.
I'll wrap up this first post with my transcoding experience. I do my editing with the free version of DaVinci Resolve, so transcoding the H.265 is a must. I used After Effects to line-up all the clips and rendered them to HQ DNxHR (I use windows). 98 GB of video off my NX1 SD Card grew into 433 GB worth of DNxHR footage. As a point of comparison, I came away from that same filming session with 370 GB of RAW footage on my BMCC. So serious 4K video eats up a lot of hard-drive space.
In my next post I'll talk about how the NX1 footage looked in the grading process...

Juxx989 reacted to Marco Tecno in Canon to NX intelligent adapter: crowfunding?
An idea came to my mind. There are more and more companies designing EF to [other systems] intelligent adapters, but none designing one for NX.

This is apparently due to samsung discontinuing its products. At least that's what a couple of those companies replied to me, when I asked about a future product designed for NX.

That's the idea: would it be possible to ask them "how much" would it cost to develop and produce such an adapter, and try to fund it ourself, via a crowfunding campaign? Personally, I'd be ready to buy one, as long as it costs as much as the ones for - say - sony F cameras.

I do a fair amount of music demos and the 1DX II has been amazing on a gimbal. I LOVE the 4K, and the AF isnt just for shallow DOF movement. Big long pushes with deep DOF still benefit from the DPAF. But keep in mind that the sweet touchscreen isn't available on a gimbal, I'm currently testing ways to get it to work with my iphone.

This is a teaser for a Music video, so not synced up or anything :

You offer a "in theoretical world base only on my personal opinion" without owning a 1Dx or a Gimbal.... I'm offering a real world opinion using the 1Dx II on a gimbal at 4k 60p using AF in a similar way that the OP is intending to use.
You are probably much more skilled and talented than me but the OP did try in real world your "theoretical" approach manual focusing on a gimbal and he was not so happy and I know why, because I'm been there and I don't want to return doing that way.
I'm really not sure why you cannot use AF with strobe, these are all done with the 1Dx, strobe and using AF (including long lenses, night shots, backlight, etc...:

Where the NX1 was 500$?! I would take a second one for that price IMMEDIATELY. Seriously.
NX1 just does most things right and is a work horse for me, something the a6xx gimmicks aren't. Ergonomics, efficient light codec (when I shot a 3 hours performance, I save half a hard drive with my NX1/NX500 combo), battery, no heating are things understated by the many, but when I work, these things become more important than one stop better iso, or the DR's absolute numbers, or a few kbytes difference in bitrate.
If I want absolute image, and depending the job (time and control in set) I rent. I do not understand how people need 10-40.000$ image from 800$ cameras, that is seriously above me.
Most of my clients, still ask for DVDs.
When I offer 10GB files or more, for better quality, they say, "no, we just want to watch on TV", which that means, we have a DVD player, and we know no better than that (even thought they just bought a 4K, 55" for Christmas!).
I go for the soft look my self for weddings/Christenings, a sharper documentary style for live/performances, and more artistically for other projects (depending concept, idea, emotions, etc).
I am working with a lot of cameras/systems. NX is king for mirrorless/dSLR, C100mkII for run and gun, LS300 for the best compromise between those two, C300mkII for more, Sonys for slow motion (FS700 is cheap to rent and provides good slow mo). In our market Alexa's are for only very expensive tv adds that are out of my league (and most people here, the industry is non existent).
