Snowfun reacted to Eric Matyas in All music at soundimage.org is now free for commercial use
    Hi everyone,
I've decided to make all of the music on my site free for commercial use as well as noncommercial. Just please credit me properly as detailed on my homepage.
If you decide to use one or more of my pieces, a donation would be greatly appreciated...any amount you can swing would be helpful.
As always, thanks for your feedback and I hope you find something you can use.

And that is certainly a decision you have the right to make. One remains to be convinced that it justifies this thread in the context of this forum however.
Just as an aside, one might wonder whether you maintain the same degree of humanitarian concern for the workers and their families in (at least some of) the countries in which your equipment (not to mention your household goods and chattels more generally) was probably manufactured.
It would be a more relevant exercise, in this context, to use your eloquence and writing skills to produce a "Guide to Lighting" for our friend Zach and others (including myself) who are new to the techniques and methods used by the more experienced.

This was brought up in another thread, but I did not want to derail it too much.
So, for those who hadden seen it yet, this video showcases the Coen brothers and their way of filming dialogue on a single (semi) wide lens:

Not claiming it's cinematic or has any artistic or technical merit. But the A7S impressed me.
Unfortunately the Manfrotto video head froze (-28) so the camera movement isn't great.

Snowfun reacted to DPStewart in VIMEO removed our ability to control playback quality - please email them with me.
    Hey gang,

You may have noticed that VIMEO recently changed their public playback structure to be exactly like YouTube's - meaning it will now "Auto-Select" a playback quality for viewers. The tab where you could specify what playback quality got assigned has been removed.

So far their P.R. people have been saying "Too bad, we're being competitive." but controlling the playback quality is pretty much the ONLY reason any of us use Vimeo over YouTube. It is ABSOLUTELY the ONLY reason I pay for their "Plus" or "Pro" service.

This little campaign here got started by Oron over on DVXUser and he has already had some email exchanges with them that he posted for all to see.
When he told them that controlling playback quality was his ONLY reason for buying their paid service, and that he would be terminating it if this control is not restored - well, they quickly stated changing their tune.

To be certain - ANYTIME I have watched any of YOUR Vimeo videos recently, my stream defaulted to their "Auto" setting EVEN THOUGH THE "HD" INDICATOR WAS STILL ON.
My system and connection plays 1080p perfectly smoothly all day long - and ALL of YOUR videos are displaying at a drastically reduced quality for me because of this "Auto" YouTube-style setting.

Here is some of the email exchange Oron posted:
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This is part of an emails they sent me from customer support:
part of email 1: "Unfortunately, adaptive streaming is the future of Vimeo’s streaming capabilities and we completely understand your hesitation if you content is not displaying as you’d like it to."

Part of email 2 (after I replied I don't like this idea): "I’m sorry to hear that my rely has disappointed you. We strongly encourage you being able to find and use a video hosting platform that is best for your needs and we’re sorry to hear that we cannot be that for you at this time."

After I decided to stop my Vimeo plus membership that will end next month, they send me this email:
"I want to be clear that I do understand your concerns about HD video, and having control over what qualities your viewer sees. Our product team is evaluating this kind of feedback, and I will certainly pass yours along for consideration."

So, again, if more people will say something it will change, I'm sure people that have Vimeo Plus or Pro don't want other people to view their videos on 720p or 360p just because vimeo thinks they don't have the bandwidth, I want to decide those things, that's the all point of vimeo.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

PLEASE join in and send VIMEO's customer service an email if you are a paying customer of their "Plus" and "Pro" subscriptions.

    Thanks all !

I use mine with the rx1004 (using a Kirk to Arca QR to add weight). It balances perfectly. And it functions as it should - you can't adjust the pan speed or anything but that's not an issue if you predict movement. But my unit also has moments when it goes beserk - vibrates furiously and needs to be switched off. Hideous when it happens. Possibly caused by moving the handle off vertical too much? Unfortunately cannot be used inverted (I wanted close to ground shots).

Do you enjoy the process as much as the product? I have an A7s and it's superb for aurora shooting. But it's "horrid" to use (with Shogun and v-loks). The BMPCC on the other hand is something I rather enjoy using. It's simple and elegant and gives you something you can play with (ie grade etc.) back home. And you will be carrying it with you at all times. To me, a lot of the enjoyment is the process - the product isn't the sole or even primary goal.

All this raises a dilemma... Blackmagic Pocket (£696 in UK) or wait for this...
I have a BMCC (too big for holiday travel), A6000 (used mainly for stills), rx1004 and A7s/shogun (used only for aurora filming).
I do enjoy "fiddling" (any other term would be to overstate my competence)  with the Blackmagic image so the Pocket is still number 1 but it's tempting to replace the A6000 with the A6300...
Pocket is possibly over-priced now? (It's ridiculous to say that, I know).
Pocket 2 @ NAB? (but delivery "in May" not soon enough...)
I head to Oslo for a long-weekend in March (wonderful light) and want something pocketable. So either I use the rx1004 (and ? buy the A6300 later) or get a Pocket now. Thoughts?

Snowfun got a reaction from Jimmy in Why 8K will not eliminate the boundary between stills and video when it comes to technique
Eventually, the sensor will merely read the available information (light and sound [temperature, smell etc???]) and send it to a storage device. That's the "camera" part done. Neither "video" nor "still". The interesting and creative bit is simply what one chooses to do with that information. Some will select an instantaneous moment (a still) or a period of time (video). Indeed there is no reason why they can't be combined. This is the point at which the technology becomes irrelevant - it records "everything" by default. The artist will be able to focus exclusively on the art...
But I think we have a few years of mega(pixels/DR/iso/etc.)-wars ahead of us first!

MDMA is about empathy above all else. A feeling of warmth and closeness and intimacy and caring in situations where those emotions either don't exist or they exist in "lower doses". Difficult to depict in isolation. But - and I think this is critical - easy to depict by way of contrast. Before, during & after. There is no dramatic perception change or distortion of physical reality. It's subtle. It's emotional: "I love you now but I won't tomorrow". Maybe "love" is too strong. "I care now but I won't tomorrow"?
It's easy to hold hands with someone whilst taking mdma. Easy to hug. Not even necessarily sexual.
Music & sound? Not convinced. It's a peaceful time of silent caring. Soft edges. The (dance) music is the same.
But these things are quintessentially personal experiences which are difficult to characterise or bind by generalisations.

    Hi,
I'm new to all this so apologies if this is a trivial question!
I'm looking to create a shot with time-lapse sky/clouds against a normal speed foreground. I can achieve a reasonably horizontal and "simple" horizon - but it isn't a "straight line". The "foreground" (normal speed) shots would be tripod based. There are then two alternatives:
    1. foreground action taking place under the horizon (i.e. not impinging on the sky or time-lapse space)
    2. foreground action takes place above the horizon.
I assume that I need a mask to achieve this? But my question is what is the best tool for this? I use FCX as an editor but have failed dismally to get to grips with Motion.
    Any advice much appreciated.
