zerocool22 reacted to QuickHitRecord in Next-gen Magic Lantern in crowdfunding
Forum member @essbe mentioned this in another thread, but I think it deserves it's own topic.
Magic Lantern developer theBilalFakhouri is showing compelling evidence that he has figured out how to implement full real-time preview in most raw recording modes across the EOS-M, 100D, 650D, and 700D. Live HDMI output is supported across all recording modes too. Many have found that these are the last two major usability hurdles for these cameras. He is trying to crowdfund £2,214 (about $2750 USD) for the 300 hours he's spent figuring this out before he releases it, and says that he will begin work on full real-time preview on the 5D iii after this campaign gets funded. As of this morning, he's about 2/3 of the way to his goal, but donations have slowed down significantly over the last 24 hours. If you'd like to pitch in, instructions on how to contribute are in the link above.
I haven't used either of my ML-enabled cameras in about three years, but this feels like it could be the final chapter in ML history. I would love to see it succeed and keep some of these cameras out of landfill as well as to provide the next generation of broke filmmakers with a truly affordable 16mm/S16 raw camera.

Personally, I would never, ever in a million years add sharpening to a video clip.

Hoping that somebody does a side by side of the S5 ii and the new sony zv-e1. I know it overheats but it ticks so many boxes that it kinda makes me regret buying the s5 II. The highlight rolloff looks so nice in the footage that I have seen online so far. (smaller). One of the biggest downsides of the sony is that adapting EF glass to it will not AF as good as Sony glass, while on the s5 II it really works so good.

Yeah this is a shootout that I want to see, I do miss my 5D III. If I can find one for a bargain I might pick it up and compare it to the S5 II. The micro jitter of the 5D III is something that I do not miss though, but locked off it might be interesting.

You could load this up on your monitor in a dark room and shoot the screen! It doesn't need to be accurate to the actual values of a ColorChecker, it's just to make a comparison between cameras.

I would love to see a colour chart shot with the same lens, lighting and settings on each in V-Log. There seems to be considerable variation in colour between some Panasonic models (GH series) and I'm wondering if the same is true for S5 and S5II

Will do a S5 - S5II comparison later on, if you guys want me to test something specific let me know.

Just an observation after limited testing, but it seems to me that when using EF lenses (and maybe others?) when there are multiple people in frame and human detect AF is on then the camera often randomly shifts between people, which is very annoying.
However, if I turn off AF detect settings completely and switch to AF tracking mode then I can just tap on one person and it's very good at holding that person until I tap elsewhere.

    Thanks!
Just checked the light, its the same for me. I also tested it on the original S5, and it only lights when charging. Maybe there is a setting so you can use it as a tally light (not sure).

I guess the AF eats battery and that's why its default to off when its not recording.

You can set it to AF constantly in the menu Video>Focus>Continuous AF>Mode 2
Congrats on your new camera! Can I ask you, when it's switched on does the power light next to the on/off switch turn on? Mine doesn't, which I find weird, unless it's charging.
Another odd thing is that Panasonic doesn't give you a battery charger in the box. Just an AC adapter to plug into the camera directly. I already have one from the GH6, but it's a bit miserly in my view.
Another miserly oddity is that old GH5 batteries won't fit in the S5II battery compartment, but they do in the GH6 which also takes BLK22s.

You can go into the settings, I believe, and make it so that AF works even when not recording.

hmm.. but doesn't the Sigma MC-21 adapter kinda invalidate his point? As a Canon user myself, the above AF results on EF adapted lenses are rather impressive and could bait me to switch. I've said it before but the S5ii is the first ever Panasonic camera I've got on my radar.
As for GH6, I think its target remains M43 lens lovers. Most of them use manual glass so AF is maybe not as important, and the camera still has some exclusive features such as internal ProRes and the dual gain sensor.
I do suspect the very delayed release of S5iiX to be calculated in an effort to avoid cannibalising S5ii & GH6 sales. I find this strategy kinda sneaky. For only $200 extra why would you go with S5ii over S5iiX once both are available?
Anyways I look forward in testing out some S5ii Vlog footage. How it grades is really the main question mark I have regarding switching. Hopefully maybe someone here can provide some! 😉

I just tape gaffer tape on it, that way the camera doesnt look like a million bucks when travelling + I can pull it off whenever I decide to sell the camera again.

I won't post the video because I know Andrew really, really doesn't like him, but Tony Northrup tested the S5II's autofocus with the Sigma EF to L adapter and it worked really well.

DJI does offer that with tracking and face detection on their RS3 gimbal and the 3rd generation LiDAR sensor.
They said they would make a handle so you could use it without the gimbal.

Hoping for a hotshoe enabled LiDAR system for multiple current cameras. I’d probably get it if it’s amazing. Otherwise, I’ll just stick with serviceable DFD AF.

oh that's great, did not know that feature.
I was going for either a canon r6 II or the sony A7IV. So I will prolly end up with the sony A7IV allthough I have a bunch of EF lenses, which is prolly better supported with the EF-RF adapter.
