I don't think the P4K sharpens in-camera. Post-blurring might help make it look more vintage but also just using vintage/lower res lenses does the trick of not making it feel too sharp.

Here's a test shot with a CCTV lens, Fujian 24/1.4.

Pairing the Pocket 4K with some good vintage glass is pretty blissful. There's been a lot of talk about how it looks more digital and modern than the previous BMD cameras - and yeah sure, I guess it's not as organic and grainy as the 2,5K. But throw on some c-mount glass or a speedbooster and old Pentax stuff and the camera sings. Haven't used it with this kind of setup on a production yet, (it's playing second fiddle to the Ursa Mini and been on a gimbal on about half a dozen shoots now) but I'm just having a lot of fun taking it on a walk and just taking some throwaway nature shots. It's something I used to do back when I used the 5DMK2 regularly, and I'm happy it has revitalized that habit again.

This was taken with the speedbooster and a Pentax 35/2.3 M42 lens on a cool winter afternoon. One of my favourites due to the very distinctive, oil painting-kinda way it renders out of focus areas and the transition between them and in-focus areas.

I like the pictures. A lot.
This camera will probably replace the micro cinema camera for me as it’s not much bigger and is much easier to work with.
I didn’t feel as strongly about the 4K production camera / Ursa because they were limited, principally by dynamic range.
I have a deep affection for the 4.6K sensor and have shot nearly daily withnit since before it was launched. I know it very well.
This pocket camera will integrate and sit very nicely alongside the 4.6K. It’s already a closer match than the micro for me without having really tested it in an A/B scenario.
I was a little worried about it having less DR Than the 4.6K but I think the other clips  show some great examples of what this sensor can do. “Nature” was incredibly tricky material to shoot as anyone who’s been in that situation before would know and it was unfair to see it being derided.
Those that did so only reveal their own inadequate understanding of what those shots reveal.
I can think of a million other scenarios I would have rather done but these sequences were specifically produced to illuminate what the camera can do in specific situations.
What im almost more excited about is the unification that Gen 4 brings. As I mentioned earlier, it’s pretty much the same people at BMD that brought you the first camera working on this camera.
They’ve learned a lot (and so have I) and I think Gen 4 is really strong. I wish this and extended video would get rolled out wide already as I think half the issue I see with users of BMD products is a lack of knowledge in grading.
Now BMD do have perhaps the greatest colour correction tool on the market BUT they don’t make it easy to get to a great result without a little arcane knowledge.
Even I often run into issues when working by myself and I see extended video being a great step in addressing that shortcoming. There’s no point in talking about how great you can make images shot RAW if you don’t know how to do it and can’t easily or intuitively find a way to do so.
With regards to the 4k Pocket.
Its a genuine low light contender. I was really impressed at what a useable picture it produces with little lighting.
I’m laughing at those that said it’s overlit. I mean a 500w chimera dimmed to almost nothing so the background lighting would still show though the tinted hotel windows is very very low light, much lower levels than the idiots demanding I walk out on the street and light by sodium were demanding.
Again, I laugh when I see comments about how noisy ISO3200 is but I’m guessing those users aren’t aware how much image processing their cameras are doing at high ISOs.  BMD allow you as the user to choose your poison. A very very underrated feature. And like colour correction it’s almost too powerful because users haven’t been instructed to change their expectations, nor how to add noise reduction or sharpening so they can season to taste.
The best testbfootage will be friends users so the sooner they ship the cameras the better.  Hopefully Gen 4 means there will be less hysteria about its performance and a few will realise there’s no point comparing it to a GHx or a Sony and learn to get the most from what it is good at.

Thanks Andrew - love your reviews and the forum.
I would be interested in your views of the GX9 compared to the GX80 -  do you gain much apart from increased resolution?  Would be interested to see how you get on with manual lenses - I have recently re-discovered the GX80 using some old legacy OM lenses I have acquired and loving it.  The 50 1.8 particularly is very sharp.  I am also trying the  28 f2.8 macro and 135 f3.5 which although very long, has a lovely character.  This is from the GX80 with the 50mm f/1.8 OM F.Zuiko

I would also be interested in your thoughts on the new L.Monochrome D mode for video as well as photo (I love the  L.Monochrome mode on the GX80).

Got a GX9 arriving tomorrow... about time I did a review of something cheap with the big shift to high-end stuff. Let me know what you'd like to see in the review of it.

The discussion about the sensor stack thickness affects the optimisation of the speed booster (as I understand it)
It means they have to alter their optical design to make certain lenses perform better post speed booster, and I believe this tends to affect the faster lenses or faster apertures at F1.4 and higher.

My dear erstwhile member can you please stop attacking John Brawley now.
I have long since given up on camera forum arguments so might not be completely up on who is right and who is wrong-evil / killed-a-kitten, but can we tone it down a bit. It's JB! We could be learning so much and having such interesting cameras talks with a film industry guy and I am sure one of the only people with a Blackmagic Pocket 2 prototype yet instead a handful of you are just bitching. It's pointless. Even if you disagree with him on certain matters, hold your tongue a bit for the benefit of the rest of us who are interested in what he has to tell.

If you liked the gh2 and gh5, why not go for a gx80 plus 12-60 kit lens, can be found for 650-700 in the eu.
4k does not interest you, but you can still misuse it to have really good full HD.

I bought the Panasonic Leica Summilux 12mm F/1.4 and the Panasonic Leica Nocticron 42.5/1.2 ... they will add more to my videos and pictures with the GX-80 than those new bodies.
There is always time to buy a new body :D

Goose reacted to Yuan in Lens advice for GX80 - Speedbooster or native
I have never used AF with Speed Boosters either. I was talking about fatigue setting in after a day of shooting and it creates more room for mistakes, needlessly.
Using native lenses opens you up to more freedom of mobility, less fatigue, focussing with lower margin of error. Basically, using a M43 system for what it excels in. I think Griffin Hammond expressed something similar for his video work.
I think the speedbooster route makes the most sense if your goal is to move onto a FF/apsc system with your set of lenses in the future (using Canon lenses now with the goal to move onto Canon cameras in the future for example).
But I think even if I move onto FF in the future, I would keep a M43 setup for its compactness. For me at least, the GX85 and 25mm 1.4 combo is just so right when it comes to size/weight to performance ratio (and cost). Besides using this for hobbyist projects, I can imagine bringing it with me on vacation without taking away from my experience, so it creates the opportunity to capture more great moments. I wouldn't consider FF glass if I wanted to have a good time.

4k, just the best 4K...you'll going to love it. Honestly, the best 4K. Camera body in any colour as long as its red, white or blue. Colour balance is locked to 2700k for uniform orange skin tones. Buttons made for extra small hands. Weather resistant, including urine. Overheating notification in 4K mode is displayed as "Hoax invented by china". Camera strap has red dye to be deposited onto neck of user. firmware accessible via secure server, directed via Russia. No word yet on pricing yet, but rumour has it Mexico will pay for them.

I got the Sigma 18-35 1.8 and lensregain first, big mistake. It's just too inconvenient, makes it unwieldly when handheld. Portability and IBIS are 2 factors that make the GX85 great, the speedbooster combo just ruins it.
I'm a big fan of the 25mm 1.4, the last time I was this excited about taking pictures was when I got my first DSLR. Here are some my pics with the 25mm 1.4:  https://www.flickr.com/photos/146178233@N07/albums/72157679142129036
AF is another thing, I remember once when I was shooting video all day with the Sigma 18-35 + speedbooster combo. I was tired and thought the subject's eyes were in focus...but in post I found that a plant near the subject was actually in focus. More room for mistakes.

After a few more tests yesterday I can safely say that even if it looks way too reddish at first sight, i wouldn't pass up too quickly on it. I finally managed to find a proper correction for the GX85 white balance. A1 M1 works for me. On top of that I'm finding useful to underexpose a bit, working with zebras at 70% and exposing for faces details instead of zebras at 100% and trying to preserve highlights. If you just expose ETTR you almost always clip the red channel which turn faces and skin into a bit of a mush. My 2 cents.
PS: I'm also dialing down the LUT mix to about 80%.

The 42.5 1.2?  That looks an amazing lens but then it is £1049.  I will see how I get on with M43 for a few months I think but it certainly is desirable!
Thanks - do you know if I remove the rubber back from the 17-55 if it can still be used on the Canon body?  If not does it go back on ok?  If so I will probably stick with the 17-55 over the Sigma 18-35 especially since you gain a stop.  Thanks for the advice on which speedbooster - seems the .71 version is the best bet.
    Nice work
Thanks also for the advice, I am thinking that I would like at least one fast native lens and the 25.17 is pretty cheap.  I think I will start there and see how I get on.
