Haha, not only you can mount in there, but you can hide it as well as have a wind breaker for it...

I would say an even better one without the lock for the PSMA dial
Hopefully with a new sensor.

Wow... a couple of the most helpful and talented members (squig and kidzrevil) banned within a few days of one another for having an opinion... that’s a shame.

And to sometimes or often call "idiots" or simply banish people that doesn't think about topic as we are, because we feel so strongly about it where actually is the border of free speech and silliness...

So let me get this straight....... you're all up in arms over free speech and the trigger happy trial by words, yet you ban a couple of solid members for their opinions?!?! Opinions that were expressed with conviction, but politely?! Certainly more politely than any of your retorts.
My god the hypocrisy is mind boggling. Infuriating even. THAT'S more offensive to me than anything in this thread. I've seen this time and time again with internet debates. Come in all spitting fire. Rebutals ensue. Make up some twisted justification about "respect" and then ban them rather than engage in conversation?
Frankly, that is a level of wimpiness that I cannot comprehend. Stand by your words, man. I mean, they're only words right? Or am I banned now?

Don Kotlos got a reaction from jonpais in BlackMagic eGPU - Yes, I Know It's Mentioned In Other Threads... BUT!
If you compare the 2018 to previous gen MBP in some heavy rendering task you will see what everyone means by i9 being limited. The performance gain will be very small ~10-15% and in some extreme cases it can be worse as well. That is far from the ~50% performance gain that you would expect theoretically from using 2 extra cores.
On the other hand, if you use a program that occasionally uses all of the cores at max for few seconds then you will see that performance boost. This is what the Geekbench measures and with which you can get ~50% better performance gain.
As has been shown here, the problem is with the inability of the cooling system to get the CPU under 100C, once the wattage is >60W. Once you restrict the wattage to some level that the cooling system can handle, you can actually get a boost in performance.
For example I did the cinebench test in which you can see turboboost for the first few seconds and then the throttling with some oscillations of the frequency:
I then restricted the wattage to 45W:
I also did the test where I allowed the wattage to go high for the first few seconds and then restricted it to 45W:
That is ~35% better than the older generation MBP and ~12% better than the stock settings. Keep in mind that the boost in performance with the i9 when compared to i7 comes only when the CPU can use more than 45W. The Geekbench score for the i9 with the fixed 45W is ~20700 for the multicore similar to the base i7. So while restricting the wattage can be helpful in CPU heavy tasks such as scientific computations/video rendering/etc for the average usage when all of the cores are used for less than few seconds the current settings work fine.
You can also see that with the 45W limit, the temperatures didn't reach 100C so in theory an even higher limit ~55W would work even better and which can get the performance gains close to the theoretical 50%.
In short, the current macs do not perform as good as expected. I am confident that apple can at least provide some remedy with a combination of wattage limitation after few seconds + some tighter coupling of fan speed and the temperatures.

You are holding it wrong @jonpais ?
But yeah ergonomics with A7/9 line is not great. It might be fine with a pancake lens, but once you put something heavy you can feel the extra strain in your hand. The battery grip helps a bit, but still nothing close to the ergonomics of the Nikon Dx/Dxxx lines.

Lots of bullshit form apple like always. These are all old sata ssd disks.
Just try Dell XPS 13 & Samsung PM961 or EVO 960/970.

IMO there are better options available than the expensive blackmagic egpu with an outdated AMD chip. The only reason to pick this is if you have a thunderbold monitor.
NVIDIA should be a better choice for Resolve/Premiere.

Don Kotlos got a reaction from jonpais in Macbook Pro or Surface Book 2 for 4k editing?
That is correct.
It will work, but unfortunately the eGPU will not be used for rendering. That was not the case for older versions of macOS & FCPX, and I hope with maveric and a new version of FCPX this will change.

Don Kotlos got a reaction from Robert Collins in Macbook Pro or Surface Book 2 for 4k editing?
The eGPU is still a mess on the mac side even though Apple has started to support it officially. While the MacOS changes have made it easy to plug an AMD eGPU, FCPX updates have actually made the performance worse. Fortunately, there are still ways to use an NVIDIA eGPU on the mac, but it requires custom scripts (not that hard), and mainly using Resolve or Premiere.
The new Blackmagic eGPU is a waste of money. I would strongly advise anyone against it since it is $700 for an old non-upgradable chip. If you want to go the eGPU route, get an enclosure and a GPU that you can upgrade. It will be cheaper & faster. I don't understand why they didn't use the Vega chip or even better 2 Vega chips.
I think the main factor to decide on the computer is if you want to use FCPX or Resolve. Both have strong points and it is up to each user to decide. If you go with Resolve then there are laptops with better dGPUs (Razer Blade one example) and you can use an eGPU much easier.
In few weeks I will have my hands on the new macbook 15 and I will do some tests with the eGPU.

Don Kotlos got a reaction from Gregormannschaft in Cine 4 - The terror
Cine4 uses illegal values (0-255) and most programs do not recognize that correctly. Are you using the correct ranges?
What color profile are you using? I have had a great experience with Cine/Pro modes with slight adjustments to the color depth.
Also in the past, I had noticed differences in skin tones when contrast was adjusted between programs:
By the way, like @Geoff CB I have also switched to Cine2 as well for most things

This is known as “the pattern”
Resident eps are are shot in 8 working days plus one day of second unit. The second unit happens concurrently with the first day of the second episode shoot.
6 days are shot in studio and 2 day are out on location.
We average about 35 setups or “slates” per day. Have done as high as 60 on Resident.
Many setups are three cameras. So that’s about 70-90 “shots” per day.
Each camera shoots about 60-90 mins of footage per day but it’s not unusual to have 2 hours per camera (for action or slow motion heavy days)
i day we have three cameras but I really mean we have theee camera operators.
We have many more cameras that are pre-build for different roles. A, B and C are Alexa Mini. D camera is a full time Steadicam camera (Alexa XT for weight and mass). It goes on down to letter q or something silly.
There are three sets of Primo Primes and each camera has its own 11-1 as well. We also have a couple of other specialty lenses like a CP 50 macro, and I also use a lot of SLR Magic primes on the micro and APO Hyper primes on the Ursa Mini.
We shoot about 6-10 script pages per day.
I always say you can’t really go much faster than a setup every 15 mins. That’s 4 per hour. On a 12 hour workday it means we theoretically can do 48 setups. It’s very hard to maintain that kind of pace in a day (and have it look good)
Sometimes you can get the shot turnover down by leapfrogging cameras. Have the A cameras do the first shot, prep the B camera to come right in after that setup is finished and the A camera pulls out.
There are 12 in the camera department not including me. Ops, firsts and seconds x 3 plus two utilities and a loader.
Time is the thing we all struggle most with. Time to light, time to shoot, time to tweak.
The pace of TV has a way of “honing” your choices and teaching you to react and trust your instincts.

Don Kotlos got a reaction from IronFilm in What's up with all the spammers? + 2 suggestions
Did the 4K pocket make the competition so desperate?
Two suggestions for @Andrew Reid:
- Unify all the RAW capable cameras into one sub-forum. Between BM making a splash, Kinefinity, ProRes RAW & RAW output capable cameras, there are a lot to cover.
- Turn the lenses pined thread into a sub-forum. Threads can be lens specific and easier to browse through.

Don Kotlos reacted to BTM_Pix in ZCam E2 4k footage in the wild, including ungraded and 120fps
I think everyone knows it's a work in progress, just quite surprised at the current point of progress in that work.
If the purpose of it was to gain feedback then I don't get the differentiation between it coming from their FB group or the wider world to be honest. Unless they've got a Reduser scenario going on there of zero criticism I expect the feedback was similarly lukewarm?
Don't take this as being snippy because it's not meant to be - I'm actually rooting for them - but if the people on here who weren't thrilled with what they saw and they were in the market to buy one, then it might not be doomed but extrapolate that out versus people who were thrilled with it and it's not great.
As I say, I'm not looking to contradict you necessarily but I think there is some relevance to the perception issue they've caused by putting this out there. Especially as its on their YouTube channel and not just a closed FB group.

Yes, it is better a manufacturer errs towards doing "too much" with their promo videos than "too little".
In fact, I'd argue it is near on impossible for a camera manufacturer to go over the top with their promo videos! They could do a full on next Avatar or Lord of the Rings productions purely to promote their new camera and it still wouldn't be too "over the top"! ha
I'm guessing they leaked these out purely by accident, it wasn't intentional?
Edit: nope, I browsed around the videos and I see comments and replies from the YT channel, this wasn't any "accidental" uploading, very intentional!
Exactly.
It is great to improve the camera after release and push it forward. BUT you still at least have to start from a fairly high level of competency!
At the very least they should have been unlisted videos, to help indicate this.

I am all for open source, but the data rates of Prores are at least half of that of cinemaDNG Raw. Even if we take the efficiency of post-processing out of the way, supporting a 4K 120p data stream of cinemaDNG raw will be unlikely. With prores RAW you at least have a chance.
But it doesn't matter, any of the two would be miles better compared to what has come out of that camera until now. My best guess is that they will not include any and within few months they will cut the price of this camera in half. And if they don't improve the quality somehow, it will be a hard sell even then.
