No offense meant to you personally, but the more people throw over the top teal & orange grade to everything, the more I f..king hate it. For me this video looks great in terms of image quality but its ruined with that grade.

I don't know how many people use Auto focus on cameras for shooting anything. We shot a short film on a Canon 80D. The focus is pretty good. But in low light, close distance focus and when no individual is in the frame (or someone walks into an empty frame), the focus jump and the ability to figure out who to focus on is a joke.
The problem is not so much of whether is can focus accurately or whether there is any focus jump. The problem is there are many conditions under which a camera with auto focus is just a joke, and can never replace a human being. And the fact that a lot of it is absolutely unpredictable.
IMHO while dual pixel and all that marketing jargon sounds great, the fact that algorithm are far from great right now, means, that the hit and miss rate is huge.
Samsung Smartphones (and much smaller sensor cameras), have far better focus locking on subjects, and yet those too have their limitations.
I posted it here because I am genuinely curious to see whether someone actually shot an entire short film, documentary,  wedding or music video, or corporate work etc on Auto focus on a camera with dual pixel (canon) or something like an A6300 or even A6500. I think users' exaggerated claims have kind of pushed the facts into the realm of dreams. People say things more for effect than for their actual worth.

It sounds great.  Same crop with the GH5 with metabones XL.  But if you don't already own the metabones, that puts the GH5 + metabones at nearly the same price range as the 5D4 if you go gray market.  And I'm going to guess 8-bit C-LOG 4:2:2 is more or less on par, and maybe easier to grade than 10-bit V-Log 4:2:2.

GH5 Advanages (even after 5D4 update)
IBIS Fully articulating swivel screen Video tools such as focus peaking, waveform, vectorscope Legendary Panasonic Battery life (Canon's video recording battery consumption rate is quite high). 4K 60p (vs 3K 60p on the 5D4) No 30-minute recording limit Less rolling shutter
    5D4 Advantages:
DPAF Canon skin tones Full frame 1080p (unchanged) Full frame pictures
Conclusion:  GH5 is still a great purchase.  I wouldn't cancel your preorder.

What about the large portion of video shooters that never use AF? Seems like more of a hobbyist hangup than something that'd hold back a working pro.

The main advances I see from this camera are the 1080p out of camera being of comparable sharpness to downscaled UHD, the ability to use stabilization with my manual primes, and usable V-Log files and monitoring without an external recorder.
The low light imprpvement and removal of the sensor crop for 4K are just bonuses.

This is why I don't shoot v log , you get so tweeked up correcting it back to look just normal , them you apply the grade to get the look you want , now you are massively tweeked up , then just say you need to tweek a single colour on a door or wall and next you are now hugely massive tweeked up and you start to break up the image codec ....so I shoot natural profile always , saturation -5 , contrast -5 , and it all works fine for me that way . I always try get it looking good in camera , don't crush the blacks , and I shoot Pannys warmer at 4000k not 3200k , that helps a lot on the skin tones

No lock-ups with the adapter yet but please wait and see. Very early days! The AF is good in stills mode with the adapter but nowhere near as good as with the Panasonic and Olympus lenses, which are lightning fast.
The anamorphic mode on the GH5 is a resolution feast... Seriously nice. I will be putting my anamorphic lenses on it, and with a 2x lens if you kept the vertical resolution as high as it comes off the card and did the de-squeeze by stretching 2x horizontally you end up with a 10K frame

So potential 5D customers that are more interested in video now matter all of a sudden, maybe the sales are not going so good with the stills crowd.
It seems to me that Canon relies to much on fanboyism, like old wars Canon vs Nikon, but in my opinion new generations have much less brand loyalty. For me, best example of this was NX1, yes maybe Samsung didn't sell enough units to stay in business, but just look how many forum members here own them and do some great work. All those guys weren't afraid to switch to a new player in camera business because they knew they are getting a very capable camera for a good price, and it can serve them well for a few more years without a problem.
Now there is Fuji XT2 that shoots 4K video and probably has even better colors (IMO) than Canon straight out of camera, and with those great picture profiles you even have the option to create different moods in camera without much grading, for a fast turnaround. And also lets not forget best looking JPEG stills straight out of camera in the business.
On the stills side of things, lets say I want to buy FF DSLR in that price range, why would I go for 5D IV, when there is Nikon D810 with still better DR, more than enough resolution and lower price point.
Also, switching glass is easier than ever these days when you have all those Sigmas now that are even better in some cases than their Canikon counterparts, but are much more affordable.
I really hope that they are feeling the breath of competitors down their neck, because who wouldn't go back to Canon if they do things right for us video guys in the future.

I mean, I disagree with almost every dipshit, crackpot political theory I read on this site... from both sides of the aisle... it doesn't mean I cannot learn from their video experiences...

Right, but the 4K is long form gop, correct? Am I also correct that there is no All-I at all at launch... not even 1080 8bit 4:20?
Dont get me wrong this camera is a beast at launch and I am seriously considering using my BH credit to buy one, but with the All-I in 4K and 1080p... this could be an epic camera at that price point.
I am really excited to hear your first impression review, Andrew. Please post lots of updates. It doesn't start shipping from BH until the 30th, so that extra week should really shed a shit load of light on this camera!!!

Of course, the "chip on the shoulder" is the exact reason why this place has more authenticity than others and feels more real.
Its why the articles that do appear actually are entertaining and don't feel like  slogging through some PR brochure.
Its why the forum has some juice behind it.
Its not self censored for safe or broad corporate appeal. I, for one, appreciate that, and the culture it allows, if nothing else.
