I think this is the situation for most people today.

Panasonic cameras let you shoot video down to 1/2s shutter speed. You must use M-mode and manual focus.
Better would be if the camera would automatically go to "slow SS mode" without the need of setting everything to manual.

I fixed my foggy GH4 EVF too with Novus2 polish. The EVF coating has peeled away itself after skiing trip in humid days. The result is excellent, like new.

I think the Canon XC10 has quite soft 4k video. Here is comparison charts for 4k sharpness (Sony RX10 II vs Canon XC10 from Slashcam.

Panasonic shows exposure values just in one video mode (M). If using S, A or P or auto iso user cant know what values the camera chooses. It leads easily diffraction softness, weird shutter speeds or too high iso. My GH4 has even no upper iso limit (like in photo mode) when using auto iso. There are lots of situation when I must use automatic exposure but I must also know what the camera is doing so that I can react when the camera goes to danger zones. It is also handy to use auto exposure with AE lock if I want to keep exposure locked. I use always auto exposure with photos. It would be very odd if the camera would not show all exposure values in S or A or P in photo mode. Why Panasonic wont show these in video mode.
Does the GX80/85 show these automatic exposure values? Will the GH5 show?

I know the GH5 will be excellent and full of new features. I still hope it will correct Panasonic "blind spot" and finally shows basic exposure information in video modes (iso, aperture and shutter speed). Is it too much to ask?

I found this topic after searching info about banding and dithering. I have got very good results with my GH4 by using dithering filter when playing GH4 4k videos. GH4 makes quite much banding in skies but when adding dither in playback the dither pattern is perfect because the is no re-compression when playing files. GH4 8bit 4k videos look almost like true 10bit videos because the dithering filter "rasterize" more tones for eye than a 8 bit file can record. It is just like a printing raster which is 1 bit but can still show perfect gradients.

GH4 and G7 native iso is obviously iso200 in video like in photos. I recommend iso200 for video, iso200 for JPG photos and iso100 for RAW photos if there is enough light.

Thanks, Aaron. Looks quite good. There is still some roughness in sky. GH4 codec adds dithering. It helps but the JPG photo is still better. How did you do that capture? Can you remember settings? Looks cineD to my eyes:

These new "super fast" Sony sensors cant do 4k 60P. GH5 will do it and take the lead again.

Some old people may prefer old film era motion look. (stuttering, flickering and softness)

I shooted some video clips in light festival at Helsinki, Finland. There was fire circus in the dark cold night (-12 deg celcius). GH4 has good dynamic range and I was able to get some details in difficult bright fire flames in the show. With my previous cameras the flames was usually just bright white but GH4 can capture lights better. GH4 has so many useful settings to adjust image.
I used 14-140mm II and other settings was 4k 30P f3.5, ss 1/30s and iso500-iso1000. Natural profile, contrast -5, sharpness -2, NR -5, color 0. Shadow/Highlight +2/0. iDynamic Low and master pedestrial +5. I cant share clips but here is some frames down sampled from 4k to fullhd.
There is some noise in these frames but when the video is playing the result is quite clean. With GH4 I can shoot with a kit lens at f3.5 in dark places, that is big improvement from GH3

Cine-D gives strange skin tones. I tested it first some time but I have later shooted with natural profile contrast reduced. Cine-D makes orange parts of skin too yellowish like a person suffering some liver desease.

Both have the same 100% sensor image. C4k has more pixels horizontally so you can pan in post more. If you dont use or want the wider image the UHD has little compression benefit. UHD has also framerate benefit of 30P.

New Mercalli is so amazing that we can almost forget that the rolling shutter exists in 4k cameras. Also easy to get tripod-like shots and pans handheld.

The new CMOS correction is very impressive. It corrects rolling shutter wobbling and vibration better than anything earlier. It is though very slow process.

Vesku got a reaction from Inazuma in How do you stabilize many clips?
I have tested now the auto batch setting and few own settings. It is time consuming to tweak so that my bad lens OIS (Pana 14-140mm v2) vibration goes away but it still crops as little as possible. I have used something like 35/35& pan and roll and 100% best stabilation but it is not very good still yet. Auto works fine but crops a bit too much. Advanced CMOS settings are so slow that I have not used those yet.   Own settings with batch are slow because I must first let the Mercalli analyze all the clips and then assign the own setting to all clips. So there is two long waiting time.   Very frustrating to mess with stab programs. I just watched my friends Nikon V1 handheld videos and those were very stable and no need for post stab.    The new Mercalli v4 still stabilizes GH4 videos nicely and without converting levels from 0-255 to 16-235 like the previous version v3. I found when I watched my same Gh4 0-255 nature videos stabilized by v3 and v4 the difference is quite big. When 255 levels are converted to 220 levels there seems to be some leveling and compressing of subtle color tones. The V4 0-255 stabilized result is more "photo like" quality and the fine color nyances of nature (greens in grass or reds of autumn) are preserved better.   I think the case is the same when shooting 0-255 vs 16-235. If the end product is 16-235 we loose the benefit.

One way to get better Youtube IQ is to render 1440 or even 2160 version of your video. When browser downscales it to monitor size (normally fullhd) it looks much cleaner.

Vesku got a reaction from EL Pistoffo in 16-235 vs 0-255 help
Lets think that GH4 0-255 is like "8bit RAW" camera. When you grade to 0-100 IRE you are compressing colors to 16-235 (normal video levels). Then you have a final program with proper and legas colors.

If you want to watch that original GH4 0-255 "RAW" video and see all these 256 levels you must set your player or video card to limited range (16-235). The computer is still not limiting your video levels, it only passes all those 0-255 directly to your monitor and you see it right. It is kind of confusing because the full range setting is actually limiting GH4 0-255 levels in monitor and the limited setting is not limiting GH4 0-255 levels.

If you watch GH4 "RAW" 0-255 without any settings you loose 16 black and 20 white level because video players and video cards has default settings for normal 16-235 video. GH4 wider range of levels just spill over the edges. Some players may have auto levels function and with it you may see all the levels. With Potplayer auto levels I still cant see the exact result, it is about right but not completely.

Some day we wont need this old limited 16-235 video standard and we can use 0-255 scale like with photos. Today some systems use and show 0-255 properly and some systems understand only 16-235. Then there are superwhites 235-255, blacker than black etc...

This sample video has so high contrast that there is no detail in blacks. It is very far from what an eye sees. GH4 can record more natural look with much better dynamic range even if it has some noise and dark tone blurring. I still prefer noisy and blurred dark tones compared to total blackness.
