This is the question that we are all asking, but if the Pocket cam is anything to go by, then the Micro will look stunning!
Think they are spending a lot of time on the URSA mini, so its the usual BM waiting game...

They need to have another phone like panasonic CM1 but with much better BSI 1" sensor, F1.4 retractable pancake zoom lens with IS, built in ND filter, newer processor like the snapdragon 820 or much faster one, 4K 60 fps, 128 GB storage and expandable with Micro SD U3! and manual controls.

    Also price $650 or lower!

    1. Blegh. Apple people. 4K on smartphones are a thing for a while now. 'But wooohhh, it's Apple doing it now, look at this, it's amazeballs'. I mean... really?
    2. Can't agree with the topic title. It's still a tiny sensor... it's still a very deep depth of field, it's still oversharpened... I thought that was a thing we're trying to avoid by shooting with cameras like the D750, to be more filmlike. The iPhone's footage is way too screamy and harsh for my taste. It lacks nuance. Besides. DYNAMIC RANGE. Man.
    3. Of course 4K -> 1080p is going to look sharper/crisper than regular 1080p from a Canon/Nikon fullframe DSLR. To me though, the amount of detail in a deep depth of field shot makes things flat, I need some layering

I wont say anything for sure before either using both or seeing alot of footage from both.
But if I was to guess based on current available gear, gear Ive used, specs like compression as well as hardware specs, etc.
The URSA will win in Image Quality, price and usability.

Dude... I'm 'Powered by Google search skills' but I can't find 'that lens buying it off of ebay.  Looks like you can get it new for $350 off from asian sellers'.
So go ahead and please enlighten us rather than just saying 'Ebay.' to enforce your claim.

Best news I've read all day! The BMD Video Assist is shipping now. Very keen to see a head to head comparison vs the Atomos Samurai Blade which is also US$495 (am using a Ninja 2 right now on a music video shoot with a Sony F3. It is nice, aside from the low resolution screen and no SDI)

The Panasonic 20mm f1.7 is a long time favourite of mine.
The Sigma 19, 30 and 60mm f2.8 are also good and cheap.

So do I. It looks like BM are heading in the right direction. They just need some time to work things out (like RED 10 years ago). If they get that 4.6k sensor right... I think we got a winner!! Every time someone complains too heavily about BM cameras, I think they should just think of that price again. For low budget "cinema"... best bang for buck any day (IMO). Spoilt little buggers!!

Biggest challenge for 4K60p is heat dissipation. D5 is a huge body.
If canon could do 4K30p 3years ago in a D5 body (1DC) don't tell me it cannot be 60fps on D5

Strange isn't it... Samsung tested the NX1 sensor at 6.5k @ 240 fps. I'm pretty certain 4k @ 60 fps would be no problem. So what's with all these other manufacturers? Are they truly this far behind Sammy?

This is totally plausible as Nikon does not have an "EOS line" to protect, and we all agree they have been pushing a little bit in video since last DSLRs (D810 and D750 with specific cine package, flat profile, clean 1080p) so I assume they would bring video killer features on the D5 and then push it down on the other models, it makes sense. Plus they have the A7RII to fight now and 4K is everywhere and if this body is supposed to last 3-4 years they can't go without 4K.
Well, if those specs are true that is good news for us because:
    - It means the next affordable FF (D750, D810) and APSC will have those feature next
    - It will push Canon. If Sony has 4K but no canikon it's ok cause they try to make Sony look like a spec oriented geek company, but if Nikon has 4K@60 fps and Canon releases 1DXII and 5D4 without 4K, then they will look ridiculous.

The CION has no drawcard. It's much more expensive than offerings from BM, and the only real difference is the form factor. The image is okay, but not 'blow me out of the water, especially at this price' good. The Blackmagic image is not 'blow me out of the water' good either, but at the price, it's pretty damn good.

Slow motion. Weather proofed body. Headphone jack. Unlimited recording length.

These are all very solid reasons why (and I'm sure I'm missing a few, such as does the G7 have live HDMI out now? Sadly my G6 lacks it) as to why a person would get a GH4 over a G7, beyond simply the obvious YAGH and V log reasons.
Though yeah, I can totally see why some people would prefer buying the G7 over the GH4. Just like how I personally feel the G6 is a stronger camera to buy than the GH3!

RED Raven or URSA Mini 4.6K? Which to go for if their body price is the same & you could pick either? (which they're not! URSA Mini is clearly going to be many thousands cheaper to own)
Clearly the URSA Mini comes out the winner here, as I don't think the Raven is better specced.
    URSA Mini is:
    a) has 4K ProRes (Raven doesn't)
    b) has XLR inputs
    c) better ergonomics
    d) global shutter option
    e) sensor size which is a better match for the Canon EF mount (URSA Mini is a little larger than APS-C vs GH2 sized for the Raven)
    f) as well as PL/B4 (and more??) mount options available instead
    g) cheaper media (and rapidly getting cheaper!! You won't see the same rate of price drops happen with RED's media)
    h) I half suspect URSA Mini will have the edge over Raven in low light (though not by a huge amount,. a stop or less). I suspect dynamic range to be close too, given how RED overstates theirs. Will have to wait for each to ship however before this can be really clear which way it falls.
    i) way cheaper EVF (and better too I reckon)
    j) better slow motion (same fps, but Raven's is heavily compressed RedCode at 13:1 while the BMD URSA Mini can do it in uncompressed raw!)
    k) better input/output options.
    l) BMD wins with the higher resolution (ironically so.... as that is RED's big obsession, resolution)
    m) free copy of the industry standard DaVinci Resolve (which you'll need to purchase if you wish to colour grade Raven's footage with it)
    n) and last but not least.... URSA Mini will ship earlier!! (yes, even with BMD's record of always being late)
Of course the usual caveats apply with this analysis: nobody has either of these in their hands yet, so specs analysis vs real world use might be far apart!

For me the last Zacuto Shootout showed that no more shootouts needs to be made. Its still 100% current and adding the c300ii, fs7, ursa mini etc would not ad anything valuable to the test.
The result would still be, given a good DP and enough lights, they can all look good.
Thats why I a while back tested and imo sort of proofed the opposite. If you take a couple of cinema cameras and a couple of cheap once but pay zero attention to lights and grading. It will again look pretty much the same.

IronFilm reacted to dahlfors in Nikon users about to get raw via their version of Magic Lantern?
    Indeed.
For you non-developers here: It's a whole different world to work with something like Canon Firmware & Magic Lantern where you actually have a nice code environment with a higher level programming language like C on ARM instruction sets vs working with Nikon firmware where there's no such development environment publicly available - and you must patch hacks in binary.
Nikonhacker project's slow progress isn't due to the developers being bad at development (I believe some members of Magic Lantern project are also contributing to Nikonhacker project ). Nikonhacker work on proprietary custom hardware that isn't as common & well documented as ARM - and have no proper higher level development environment. It doesn't matter how good of a developer you are and how much experience you have - something with less documentation (or as in this case, no public documentation at all) and without a proper development environment will always take longer to work with.

I find if I show up with lights, a pro-looking set of lenses, a rig, and a mattebox, they don't look twice at the name on my camera--especially once they see the final product. YMMV.

You could also look at a set of Contax Zeiss glass. If you're okay with f/2 or 2.8 lenses, you can pick up a basic set fairly inexpensively. The thing to watch out for with Nikon glass is that the focus rings turn the opposite direction of every other lens manufacturer. It makes it hard to develop muscle memory if you ever use anything else, and, personally, drives me bananas.
The ones on the Personal-View FAQs? I found those pretty helpful. The Minola Rokkor and Contax Zeiss Survival Guides are also worth looking at if you want the lay of the land.
