IronFilm reacted to Flynn in New Canon 4K camera!
For me, I have no interest in buying a lens that is the full frame equivalent of f7.6 to f15.2 in terms of depth of field. Having said that, I'm sure people will be able to produce beautiful footage with it. But I'm not gonna limit myself with a lens like that.

IronFilm got a reaction from Liam in Canon's GH4 "Competitor"
At best, this might be a somewhat decent competitor vs FZ100 and RX10. But I'll be skeptical if they manage it, hope they do! Would be nice to see more competition in that market.
However, this certainly is no way at all the "GH4 competitor/killer" which was rumoured to come from Canon.

IronFilm reacted to SleepyWill in Rokinon 10mm f2.8 or 12mm f2.0?
Just wanted to say stab, that the video you posted was gorgeous! I could never be brave enough to do any wedding video and on the basis of what you just showed, if I were in the Netherlands when I got married, you would be top of my list!

There actually is a very nice wide, bright and native solution coming up: the Voigtlaender 10.5mm f/0.95. Won't be cheap though. Probably well over €1000
http://voigtlaender.com/10,5-mm-f-0,95-nokton.html
Or the Kowa 8.5mm f/2.8, same price range...

Expensive, but good: http://whimsical.nu/2014/12/01/a-kowa-prominar-8-5mm-f2-8-micro-four-thirds-lens-review/

IronFilm reacted to Stab in Rokinon 10mm f2.8 or 12mm f2.0?
Thanks JFR. First, would you mind editing your post and deleting the link that I've posted and you quoted? I just wanted to show it to you, not have it here online forever. Thank you very much. If people are interested in my work, they could visit my website http://www.cinematicwedding.nl .
The video you posted is indeed 'the next level'. Great looking footage, editing, grading, etc. But that is nowhere near 'run & gun' like we wedding filmers do. These shots are prepared and prepared well. They used lights, production design, etc. I'm sure most shots are done in multiple takes. This is more like a short film. Although I get your point, this isn't really a fair comparison.
When I bought my GH3 2 years ago, there wasn't an alternative that could shoot 1080p at 50 or 60 fps. There is now. Of course I will be upgrading along the way, but the camera is not my limiting factor at the moment. Neither in my creativity, nor in what my clients think of my films. Quite the opposite, they are often amazed by the 'clear image' and slowmo. Unfortunately, my business is not high enough ranked in Google yet to make enough money to constantly upgrade all my gear. As you understand, the camera is only one of the tools one needs to buy to make good films.
And as much as I agree there are better camera's out there in terms of DR, colors and low light, the GH3 and GH4 are more than great alternatives. You are right that ISO 1600 is the maximum ISO one can use. We never go over it. But with a Speed Boosted f1.8 lens I've only once encountered a venue where it was slightly too dark and that was in the film that I posted here.
Anyway, will check out more work of Delivery Men. Cheers.

IronFilm reacted to noa in Rokinon 10mm f2.8 or 12mm f2.0?
This particular video has nothing to do with weddings, it's a preplanned production set, everything you see in that film is staged, you can make any camera look good in such a situation. Don't know if you ever have shot a wedding, their is no-one that says "action!" , there are no second takes and if you have to shoot from inside a venue directly into the sunlight during a ceremony that's just bad luck.

IronFilm reacted to noa in Rokinon 10mm f2.8 or 12mm f2.0?
I have shot 6400 iso on the gh4 in 4k and it looks fine when downscaled into a 1080p project, that's why low light is not a issue for those camera's, ofcourse a c100 or a7s will shoot cleaner and can go higher in iso but why would you, if I can show a candlelit venue the way I can see it with my eyes when using a gh4 I don't need a a7s to turn night into day, I just need to show it like it was and then 3200 iso and a f2.0 lens are already sufficient.
Also remember, we are not talking high end commercial productions here for corporations, these weddingsfilms are for regular people that can't tell the difference between a image from a sony a6000 and a canon 1dc, as long as you manage to get the content right and have sufficient skill and talent to use your camera's at their best and edit it into a compelling piece then the gear doesn't matter. Almost all current camera offerings below 1500 dollar are suitable camera's to cover weddings, even high end, with.

IronFilm reacted to Stab in Rokinon 10mm f2.8 or 12mm f2.0?
Are you serious? A GH3 + Speedbooster + Sigma 18-35 f1.8 (f1.2 with SB) is not bad in low light at all. Sure, there might be better low light camera's, but this isn't bad at all. Also, I need the 50p 1080p for slow mo and I simply like the current look I'm getting. At the time I invested in these camera's, C100's couldn't even do 50p/60p at 1080...
Many people don't take these Panasonic 'toys' seriously but I guess that's actually a good thing.
By the way I forgot to mention that I need this wide angle mainly for the 2nd camera, in this case the G6, to record a wide view of the ceremony.

IronFilm reacted to BrooklynDan in The art of downgrading
I recently had to give my laptop in for repair. It's going to take about two to three weeks. I had been working on a feature film screenplay at the time, and had started on a second draft, but the work was proceeding very slowly. Browsing the web and watching stuff was what was taking up the majority of my free time. I don't have cable in my house, do not have a smartphone, and my computer was also my DVD player. Without it, I have essentially been sent back to the 1950s. So I order to stay productive, I decided to continue working on my script....longhand. And writing it out on paper without the benefit of instant rewrites or having the first draft in front of me has really boosted my productivity. I write more pages per day, and think about things very carefully before putting them down on paper. Because if I want to rewrite something, I have to remove the page, and rewrite all of the stuff on it. I have a growing stack of rejected pages in the folder of my binder.
Then, after I finish writing, I go to the gym (something else I was loath to do with a Netflix Instant account constantly in front of me), then I retire with one of the many books I have on my shelf that I was meaning to read but never bothered to before I lost my computer. It's a true creative's life.
That said, I will hug and kiss my laptop when I get it back from repair. This little vacation from the world of electronic devices was fun, but eight hours of web-surfing is one of the few things that makes me forget about my stresses. It's like a bottle of liquor or a joint. It helps you escape reality. I just hope that I maintain at least part of the discipline I have developed.

Totally and blatantly FAKE! The PDF was awful.

IronFilm reacted to Jimbo in That GH4 Firmware Update...
I think Panasonic are safe to boost the GH4 firmware without affecting sales of a rumoured AF200.
My hunch is that they will release a firmware update with v-log etc. alongside the announcement of the AF200 so that the GH4 becomes the perfect B Cam for the AF200 with matching colour profiles.
Maybe a hunch, maybe a hope ;-)

IronFilm got a reaction from Xavier Plagaro Mussard in Why so much slomo shooting
It helps a *lot* for a camera to have (at least) one "killer feature" for it to get attention
For instance the GH4 was first (ICL at a non-insane price) with 4K. Killer feature!
A7s has insane low light. Killer feature!
NX1 lacks a similar "key feature" that can instantly sell itself to the average joe out there. 240fps FHD would be that!

IronFilm reacted to fuzzynormal in The cameras used for the films at SXSW
Unfortunately, this is not the site for that. This is pretty much a gear-centric place. I think that people of my ilk congregate here because we're involved in production, but since we're all on a lower level of budget and skill it's a heck of a lot easier to talk about specs than ideas. I can testify that in my own case I have more gear than I have ideas.
BTW, does anyone know of a website where talking about ideas and collaborations happens? When you consider it, does does that sort of online interaction even seem viable?

IronFilm reacted to fuzzynormal in Why so much slomo shooting
Once I got my hands on the FS700 you better believe I abused the slow-mo. Had fun doing it too.

IronFilm reacted to Xavier Plagaro Mussard in Why so much slomo shooting
Film emulation for video (with noise, hair, flickr and frame movements), plant growing animation, black bars to simulate 16:9, too shallow DOF, slow motion and now color correction abuse. What will be the next video cliché??

IronFilm reacted to Zak Forsman in The small film festivals and the good vs bad of the democratization of filmmaking.
You've got to research your festivals. And then have the willpower NOT to submit to the shitty ones just because it looks like an easy in. There are 100% legit regional festivals that have huge sponsors and attract audiences to the festival. They don't simply rely on who the filmmakers can bring.
I'm leaving in a few days for the Phoenix Film Festival. This is a regional fest in a largely conservative state that attracts more than 23,000 ticket buyers of independent cinema every year. I had a feature-length movie world premiere there in 2013 and we sold out 2 of our 3 screenings without lifting a finger. There are many more like this... deadCENTER in Oklahoma City, Dances With Films in LA, Cinequest, Austin, Sidewalk in Alabama.
It takes work but there are ways to learn which festivals to submit to. Moviemaker magazine puts out yearly lists of great festivals worth the submission fee. This makes it easy to avoid festivals like the Buffalo-Niagara Fest that pressures filmmakers to buy advertising in their program and whose screenings are routinely attended only by other filmmakers who happened to travel in for the festival.
All in all, there are too many festivals, I agree. Most suck. But there are a select number that do a great job and serve a large audience that's hungry for independent movies. They might be harder to get into, but that's the point right? They have to be more discerning because they've built a reputation based on the movies they program each year. Which points to the real difference i see between successful fests and unsuccessful ones. Successful festivals make the experience of the festival AND the films they screen into the main attraction, unsuccessful ones rely only on who the films attract, which as we know, often doesn't amount to jack shit.
I've learned to navigate through the garbage and thankfully, it's been more years than i can count where i had the misfortune to attend a festival I'd describe as "lonely".

IronFilm reacted to tosvus in Canon Rumors says GH4 competitor will be fixed lens in smaller C100 style body
I think the problem I that Canon have shown themselves to be very cynical with lower priced cameras in the past.. Withholding features to protect their own high end equipment won't win them any favor with the majority of visitors to this site. By all means though, if the can come out with a price competitive camera for once, that would be great!!

IronFilm reacted to Mattias Burling in NX1 Lens
It's just upscaled.
I did some tests a while back that showed that youtubes compression is so bad that hd upscaled and 4k looks pretty much the same.
But when upscaled youtube enables three times the bitrate and when viewed in 1080p the resolution is back to normal but you still gained the higher bitrate.
Same with good HD from the bmpc and 4k downscaled, on youtube it looks the same.

IronFilm reacted to AaronChicago in Canon Rumors says GH4 competitor will be fixed lens in smaller C100 style body
Sales doesn't mean jack shit to you and I. We don't profit from any of these companies. We only benefit from forward thinking technology and manageable price points. Look at Beats headphones. 2nd worst reviewed headphones on the market, yet they're extremely popular and have killer marketing.

IronFilm reacted to lafilm in The small film festivals and the good vs bad of the democratization of filmmaking.
I will never understand how any human being can be offended by anything...especially art.
In the last 10 -20 years, I've heard so many stories like this about a movie, or a song, or what a celebrity says (like latest Charlie Sheen incident when he called out Obama for being a douschebag).
Dont let other people sway your emotions in such a drastic way/ in any way. It's human nature that were all different and like different types of entertainment.
If someone like porn, or death metal, or rap music about killing cops, so be it.
Until someone does it for real (rape, murder, cop killer, etc...) it's all FAKE.
I don't subscribe to the theory that Entertainment: Movies, Video Games, Pornography makes someone in real life go out and kill someone.
Kids today that respond violently in real life and blame entertainment for their actions are very weak-minded followers..and frankly already had a few screws loose before they watched "that movie".
People that are easily offended should ask themselves why?
I believe its a generational concept.
10, 20, 30 years ago when me and my buddies went to see violent movies at the drive-ins, we never heard the words "offensive". Never.
This new "politically correct" generation (I like the term "brainwashed generation") is becoming a (what this Obama government wants) sheepish, follow the leader Socialist society.
Which in the long term will be far more dangerous to kids than violent video games, movies, and hard core rap music.
Use the brain you were born with people. Don't let other people have the power to "offend" you with their art.
We're all different.
If someone wants to shoot a film about guys raping "whores", or a movie about neo-Nazis torturing and murdering "Niggers" and "Kikes"...or if Ice Cube wants to shoot a movie about his song of "Killing LA Pigs " (cops) let these artists create without getting your panties in an uproar.
Grow a pair and accept it.
Like filmmaker Spike Lee says: "I'm a black man, not an african-american, and I don't think brothers should be fucking white girls. Let whitey fuck his own and lets keep our black people whole".
You think that comment is going to stop me from enjoying a Spike Lee film like "Do The Right Thing"?
Hell no.
Dude has a right to say or do whatever he damn well pleases...without being called out in this ridiculous PC society as a racist.
Wer're all different and we say and shoot and enjoy different things in life.
Accept it and don't let some strange filmmaker get a rise out of you.
Man, bring back the 1970's.

IronFilm reacted to theJesusHorse in Am I stupid to consider a D750?
I just got a D750 yesterday and I'm very impressed with it's performance. Lots of detail, no moire, great dynamic range. I have it matched with the optically stablized Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 and the results are excellent.

1 year too late. I'm sure Panasonic will release a forward thinking camera this year that will render the Canon competitor irrelevant.

IronFilm reacted to jpb in New Fairchild Sensor - Same DR of the Pocket and Cinema, but in 4.5k
this Fairchild LTN sensor is a dream for a camera manufacturer, with its 4608x2592 pixel count,
it scans images from which you can extract 4096x2304 Super35 16x9 images for 4K delivery
while you send to the viewfinder the entire non cropped image displaying the standard +12%
out of frame field of view that all professionnal filmmakers request.
When designing the Aaton Delta Penelope, to clearly differentiate the extra field image
from the recorded one we were showing it in +/- bright b&w as shown in the attached image.
It would be good if a manufacturer could offer that option which better emulates a film camera OVF.
