IronFilm reacted to Jimmy in Canon's GH4 "Competitor"
Here's the thing though John... I was invested in Canon, both camera and glass.... Then Sony bought out the FS700 and it ticked more of my boxes, so I sold up and moved on. I have since moved on yet again.... I wont cry that Canon or Sony didn;t constantly meet my ever changing needs... I just move to whoever does, say in the knowledge that my needs are not the same as the next man.
Canon glass fits everything, so I don't see the issue with moving to another platform. Then if Canon do make your dream camera, move back.
and when I said "These things" I meant canon having an attempt at a niche market... why knock it, choice is great.

IronFilm reacted to Andrew Reid in Canon XC10 4K camcorder
So what if it edges out the RX10? That concept is 2 years old and sells for less than $1000.
This is supposed to be a cutting edge 2015 Cinema EOS camera for $2500!

IronFilm got a reaction from Julian in rumors: NX1-LX
Classic case of salespeople talking utter BULLSH*T! Which I put down to 95% them simply wanting to make a sale at any cost, and 5% due to being utterly clueless and out of touch.
As seriously come on... do you really believe the 16-50mm f/2-2.8 (which sells for merely a little bit more than US$1k) could perfectly cover FF too?

Policar - I'm perfectly ok with Samsung's Lens line as I am NOT invested in the Giant sleeping "Canon" or Sony (Indeed SOny is better than Canon in innovation).
Providing a camera that can get close to RED's results that introduces /utilizes the H.265 where footage takes a 5th of space, still photography and AF is close to excellent - at a sub $1.5k price is indeed a revolution (Referring to the NX1)
Why woul'd I buy a RED for what $10K not including the storage needed and lenses ? We can all argue on ISO and DR performance - but from what Ive seen - unless youyre trying to shoot at 1lux - the NX1 does a fine job. At 800-1600 ISO I could not see a major diffeence between the NX1 and the high end cameras.
So if I can shoot a theatrical film using NX1 - I will - at the end of the day 80% of the result is dependant on the DP's knowledge and even MORE important in the story/substance behind the film.
That being said - would have loved to see 4:2:2 recording internally and at least 10-bit so Green Screen work would be optimal - though I have seen some amazing results in 4K 8-bit and even 4:2:0 pulling a clean key.
Policar - I'm assuming you are on the still photography side of things and video is not your primary concern?

IronFilm reacted to Marco Tecno in rumors: NX1-LX
Eric (a guy posting on dpr) did some tests on the lenses, and those resulted in the lenses covering at most an aps-h sensor size.

What other 4k s35 camera is there in the price range that can use native mount as well as M39, MD, AR, m42, ef, Nikon and so on, because I would love to buy it.

IronFilm reacted to ziggy123 in rumors: NX1-LX
True indeed. Looking at the specs of the earlier versions of RED camera I was surprized to see the sensor was only 14MP - I believe the new one (Dragon Epic Camera) is 19MP - now I understand why Samsung wants to drop the Sensor resolution from 28MP to 20MP as you can gain much higher DR and fps by using less computing power.
I wonder to how mch f-stops that would translate to (I think Red claims up to 18 stops using HDRx? - not sure what HDRx is :))
It feels however that Samsung is creating a revolution just as RED did when it took Prices of High End 2K/4K cameras to a 10th of the price - exciting times no doubt
Cheers

IronFilm reacted to cjwilliams0013 in Samsung nx1 Price Drop
Even if they do come out with the LX, its not like the NX1 is a bad camera and I can't see Samsung isolate or drop off their firmware updates with the product and create an issue with many people moving to Samsung for video and not getting support.

IronFilm reacted to Simon Shasha in Tempted? Should you get a $6499 Canon C300 or wait until after NAB?
Very serious. I've never had a problem with aliasing and moire on my BMPCC.

IronFilm reacted to j.f.r. in Your realistic hopes for NAB?
Two things I really want......
* Blackmagic Pocket Camera in 4k with at least 48fps in 1080p, even if it's only 30 second bursts it would be greatly appreciated
*Sony A7s II incorporating new in body stabilization + tweaks over their first camera

I'd also like to see more accessible global shutter cams.

This 'rumoured' GH4 update.
Ninja Star 2 4K
As I'm looking at a "Cinema Camera" in the next 12 months, I'm very interested in the Panasonic AF200 that is meant to be coming out. Plus some lenses for that camera.
I'm interested, though expect it'll be massively out of my price range, the C300 MKII. I'd love Canon to firmware unlock 4K out via HDMI on the C100 MKII, not gonna happen though. Possible 5DC as well?
Software wise, as a FCPX user, a big update to that software. Again rumours are something is coming around NAB even though Apple don't do NAB itself.

IronFilm reacted to Ed_David in A Walk Downtown - Samsung NX1 - 4k Cinematic Test
Yea those videos weren't really that impressive to me. Andrew's flim and his articles convinced me. Josephe Gordon Levitt is an amazing person and filmmaker - Don John is a great film - but yea, his little hit record short didn't really move me.

IronFilm reacted to Geoff CB in Nikon 1 J5
I don't know what the hell is wrong with nikon. All they would have to do is add a 24 fps mode and I would use the camera with small c-mount lenses for short films. Why they continue to shoot themselves in the foot when as others say they have NO cinema lineup to protect just completely baffles me.

IronFilm reacted to Danyyyel in Nikon 1 J5
People here should see this camera for what it is, a $ 500 interchangeable camera with a Kit lens that will cost $ 400 in 6 month, which is not meant for enthusiast and pro filmakers. Yeah the marketing sucks like all those 4k cellphone that barely reach this level of resolution because of their sensor and lens. If you follow Nikon product cycle you will know that the main advancement come in two ways. Once every four years with the releases of its flagship D3/D4 and D800 type camera, which themselves get a mid term update evolution in between and some test bed tech that they implement in entry level camera like the moire/alias free, very good lowlight D5200 camera that first used pixel binning. This camera has it purpose, can you imagine that it has a better processor than the top of the line D4s and D810 camera!!!! The latest D810 and D750 already have some of the best 1080p out of any dslr. This indicates that you will have at least 4k in the next update of the D4/d800 and all future Nikon bodies in the next two years.
Their update might be incremental but they are getting their, contrary to the A7s and Nx1 their camera don't have big flaws like rolling shutter, or lack of DR and low light in the NX1 or crappy colour science that needs an expert colourist with the Sony cameras. I see the same analogy made about Canon on internet board where the geeks can only comprehend resolution. But yet when you see pro usage or more artistic usage like film festival, the Canon is everywhere because the C100/C300 line are balanced cameras with no big flaws like appalling rolling shutter or colour science.

Nikon are turning back the clock! Soon they will be giving us silent movies!!

IronFilm reacted to Micah Mahaffey in Samsung NX1 dynamic range comparison
I've used both a c100 and an nx1. I'll just say that to me personally the dynamic rand is definitely close! I honestly didn't see that much of a difference at all in Dr on the nx1. I'll also add that the nx1 is a great camera that'd I'd personally choose to shoot on over a c100 or c300 at this point.

IronFilm reacted to arellaTV in Samsung NX1 dynamic range comparison
To be fair (and you're probably well aware of this), dynamic range tests are in a lot of ways subjective. It depends on how many stops is considered usable to that particular tester (noise levels, exposure clarity, etc). Add to that, people conduct the test in different ways (using different charts, profiles, differences in transcoder, firmware version and knowledge like you said), and it becomes even more confusing.
I personally don't own the NX1, so I can't give you a definitive answer, but from all of the footage I've seen, it feels like the NX1 stops a little sooner in the highlights compared to other cameras, but that the highlight roll off is a fair bit more attractive. It seems like the NX1 benefits from underexposing a little bit instead of the other way around (though again, I may totally be wrong about that). According to Andrew's findings against the C300, "If the C300 can do 12 stops the NX1 can do 11.5." Cinema 5d pegs it much more harshly at 10.1 stops.
To my unscientific eye though, I've seen footage that squeezed a lot of detail from contrasty situations in a great way, and some that fail dramatically. It really depends on the context and how much you really need for that shot imo.

IronFilm reacted to Jimmy in NAB build up - Canon working on GoPro competitor and next Cinema EOS camera will target 'wider market'
Not sure GoPro can be considered niche anymore?
I was on vacation this week in Iceland, we went to a place called the blue lagoon.. A big tourist attraction, and I would say 1 in 4 of the younger tourists had a GoPro to take video/photos of them in the pool. I was shocked.

IronFilm reacted to JazzBox in NAB build up - Canon working on GoPro competitor and next Cinema EOS camera will target 'wider market'
I really hope in this GH4 update: I'd love to have cropmarks for safe area (2.35:1 etc...), RAW and ProRes 422 (HQ) files direct to SD cards in BPCC style...
And, since I never liked the GoPro "look", it would be great if Canon could offer an alternative!
