@DBounce Like you, I believe it was technically impossible to put IBIS into the GH5s without altering the body; and I don't buy Panasonic's excuse that they removed IBIS to satisfy the .0001% of filmmakers that object to it.

Panasonic didn't say they *chose* to remove IBIS, the benefits of not having it was just a thing mentioned in passing to point out "hey, it isn't all bad!"

Anyway, this video didn't need IBIS:

Not overly fond of bright night scenes that are more intense than direct sunlight. Maybe in small doses? I use lights - in fact, I love having control over lighting - so high sensitivity isn't a big deal to me.

I generally want a scene to look *realistic*, doesn't mean it should look identical though! I might go a little brighter (or even a little darker, if that is the mood desired), but to be massively different in appearance to reality? Unlikely I'll take that path.

David, nice scope you have on topic. I thought that had been written by me (except the fact you left the REDs outside), can you imagine? My finest vote would end on Blackmagics anyway. They fully deserve it!

    @IronFilm

    RED? What is that?

These cameras can film ALL colors! Not just red ;-)

Show me how to use a monopod swimming where you can't touch the bottom... hahaha.

    Simple.

You use a very very very very very very very very very very very very tall monopod.

  5. Was so extremely excited and happy over the Panasonic GH5S announcement:

     http://ironfilm.co.nz/leaked-the-specs-of-the-panasonic-gh5s-finally-we-get-the-first-stills-camera-with-timecode-i-o/

But now I'm starting to get very worried, extrashot just replied in the comments of their YouTube video:

I agree... it's a major disappointment the way things are at the moment. The GH5S isn't constantly jammed to the input... it jams when the menu option is pressed and then runs on it's internal clock until you jam it again.  And yes, the internal clock loses 9 frames each time the camera sleeps or is turned off.  I'm used to cameras that will stay perfectly sync'd to timecode for as long at you leave the BNC connected... so this is very frustrating.  If you're running a multi camera shoot on mains it could be useful... or if you remember to jam to the audio mixer every time before hitting record.  I was hoping that this T/C function wasn't quite right because we were using a pre-release version of the firmware... and I haven't heard any other reviewers pick up on it yet?

Wait... what?? No way, it can't be constantly jammed to the input??? I hope this isn't true in the shipping product. Otherwise I have to ask what were the Panasonic designers smoking at the time?! This is a major major issue that Panasonic needs to address asap!

  6. Is tricky to give advice without knowing your budget range, but here are some suggestions I'd give:

Varicam LT: arguably "the best" camera right now (short of an Arri 65 or Sony F65 etc... those truly ridiculous priced ones!). Yes, even better than say the usual Arri Alexa. Plus, you can pick up an EVA1 or GH5S as a great B cam for the Varicam!

Sony F5 / F55: the F5 is going very cheap these days secondhand, is packed with more features perhaps than any other camera at this price point.  (and you're F3 could stick around as a lovely B cam for its "free" price! ha)

Sony FS7: basically is a "baby F5", very similar in picture quality, & capable of 4K 60fps 10bit as well. But lacking many of the extra bonuses you might see on the F5, such as TC or genlock, but you said you don't care about those anyway.

URSA Mini Pro: best bang for buck of all of these that I'm mentioning! (unless you get an absolute bargain for an F5, which I've seen occasionally them go for FS7 secondhand prices) The URSA Mini Pro is a lovely evolution forward from the URSA Mini 4.6K (which is itself a *lot* better than its brother the URSA Mini 4K, so don't get those two mixed up when reading reviews!)

Kinefinity Terra 4K: gives the URSA Mini Pro a hard run for "value for money", coming close behind. Has an eND option with the Kinemount with EF lenses. (also can do PL lenses, but I don't know of an eND for PL, however I imagine with PL lenses you'd be more ok with using a mattebox as well)

EVA1: the most compact 4K 10bit on the market! Super lightweight for a camera with those specs plus S35 + NDs + TC + SDI + etc... and you've got the option between EF or PL with a third party accessories.

Ones I would *NOT* consider  (but you might, but probably won't... as you're stuck with EF *or* PL, not both! But all the cameras I mentioned above, at a minimum, can switch between EF and PL):

Canon C200: lacks a middle codec, you only have the extremes of 8bit or raw!!
C300 mk2: overpriced (although, its price has massively come down since launch. So not so crazy to pick it now)

From his explanation it is 16.6 stops with the 3-4 stop getting increasingly noisy, but 14 stops is usable. So depending on someone noise tolerance, it could be between 12.6 to 14 stop. The whole blog workflow is very interesting and very deep technically, so looks to be very credible.

Or even "seventeen stops" if someone is pedantic and totally ignoring noise levels!! :-P

This is why it can be so tricky to trust stated DR numbers, unless you see them side by side.

(for instance reduser fanboys are well known to overstate DR!)

There are a couple GH5's listed at $1600 on Fred Miranda's buy and sell boards - one comes with 5 extra batteries, a double charger and Vlog.

Not sure they're going to drop dramatically from there - 20% off in less than a year.

If only that GH5's in your sentence lacked the apostrophe!

That awesomeness of own Nikon lenses is you can very easily use them on any EF camera.

As for your concerns about IBIS, I can tell you with certainty that temperature affects the noise of the image, and placing a large heat sink on the sensor can give a much better image. For example, this is the heat sink that ursa mini is using:

Damn, look at the size of that thing!

GH5 is clearly a better hybrid, and has distinct advantages for hobbyists without support gear, but the S definitely gets me hotter under the collar.

Maybe you need one of those URSA Mini heatsinks/fans to cool you down?

As Ironfilm pointed out, Panasonic is doing the smart thing by chasing the niche's that CaNikon ignore. IMO, if Panasonic would add a top notch hybrid AF system, they could really put a hurt on the C1/200. Though Olympus and Fuji can't come close to Sony levels of AF-c, much less Canon's with the DPAF - so maybe that's a tougher nut to crack. I can live without IBIS (though I prefer it), but I'm not a fan of DFD at all. That's why I'll wait for used copies of the GH5s so I can take one for an extended test drive without losing any cash in the process.

Agreed about "tougher nut to crack". Even if Panasonic just got par with Sony (which isn't really that far off?) then it would do wonders for them.

But makes business sense for Panasonic to target the "low hanging fruit" that they can do to "get ahead" of the competition, such as 4K DCI 10bit or better lowlight

Agreed also about waiting for used copies of the GH5S, what is the rush? I am going to try hard not to buy any cameras this year! (although I am discussing with one person about buying a RED ONE.... oops!)

In February 2013, Red filed for an injunction against Sony, claiming that several of its new CineAlta products, particularly the 4K-capable F65, infringed on patents the company held. They requested that Sony not only be forced to stop selling the cameras, but that they be destroyed as well.[23] Sony filed a counter suit against Red in April 2013, alleging that Red's entire product line infringed on Sony patents.

Hahaha, patent lawyers are hilarious! :-P

Hey Raafi, how do you find the audio on the body (Without the Kineback)? Do you think it will do fine with a Rode mic in the 3.5mm?

A camera mounted mic on *ANY* camera is never going to be a great option.

But please, give us a break when someone pops up with the everlasting R&D argument. When the Panasonic man comes to honestly tell us both models were developed at same time.

Just because they were both developed at the same time, doesn't mean the R&D costs for the GH5S was "free".

Like the title says, should I get a good body like Canon 80D and a "regular" lens or get a T3i body with a more expensive lens?

From the long term perspective, a lens will depreciate slower than a camera body will. Thus in the long run you'll come out ahead.

But no way on earth would I ever be buying any of those Canon DSLRs! :-o

With your teeny budget I'd suggest:

    Secondhand Panasonic G7
Secondhand Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 in Nikon F mount (or similar lens, such as from Tamron)
    Secondhand Nikon 50mm f1.8
    RJ Lens Turbo
    Panasonic 14mm f2.5 pancake
    Panasonic 25mm f1.7
Tascam DR10L (your budget is too low for true wireless, but at least having this will massively improve the quality of your talking head videos)
Sirui tripod & monopod with a fluidhead
    CAME-Single gimbal

I'd like to also add the suggestion of redheads and a 1x1 LED panel. But I suspect we've already blown your budget!

Nothing about greed but business. Let's differentiate : ) That's the reason why GH6/GH6S will come, not if will ever come. That's pointless :-)

"Greedy" there was jokingly referring to us the consumers, who are complaining even though Panasonic has been showering us with wonderful cameras!

Full frame is more desired in photography, but there's a growing movement to go medium format as those systems come down in price.

I purchased cheap medium format lenses secondhand on the anticipation of this happening in the future! ;-)

As once medium format digital is cheap, then secondhand prices are going through the rough! (like what happened when APS-C / MFT mirrorless became popular, or heck even once the RED ONE became famous that pushed up prices of old PL lenses! To go even further back in history)

I'm not touching mirco four thirds with your 10 foot pole. A simple physics issue for me.

GH5 drains a lot more battery than the GH4. It is not even close, it is reaching Sony territory really (people are carrying similar amount of batteries in jobs I've noticed).

So, we already are talking about the GH6?! I have to accept that human race is so greedy. After 3 (+ EVA = 4) new cameras in less than 9 months, that cover -almost- all bases, people will be still waiting for the GH6 that may, or may not, ever come. Whatever..

Very greedy! As Panasonic truly has been on a roll lately with a string of great cameras for us: G85/GH5/G9/EVA1/GH5S/etc

It is astonishing how many cameras lack TC!  C100/C200/FS5/FS7(if without XDCA)/FS700/FS100/EX1/etc etc etc

Seems five figures for a camera is the point at which then TC becomes "normal". Sub $10K RRP then TC is quite rare :-/

With a few exceptions, such as: Panasonic EVA1 and Panasonic GH5S!! Thank you very much Panasonic.

Maybe, just maaaaaaaaaaaaybe, Panasonic saw the writing on the wall with the Tentacle Syncs and Zoom F8/F4 (Tentacles + F8 is a GAME CHANGER!! For bringing quality features + TC to a very low low price point, in very small packages too!) and thus Panasonic decided to implement timecode more widely with their products?

    10 minutes ago, jonpais said:

Just comparing to entry level cinema cameras, not mirrorless. hehe

Thus when I was commenting on how unusual it is for GH5 to offer TC in a couple of their cheap cameras, I was quite clearly referring to cameras in general and not limiting it to mirrorless (or DSLRs).

What other cameras have you used, RED ONE / FS700 / URSA / URSA Mini / Arri Alexa / F3 / F5 / etc? And out of those cameras, when you say "giant" how does it compare? Bigger/smaller/heavier/lighter? Both in reality, and in how it felt to you. (because a camera can be technically bigger, but "feel smaller" due to a good design. Or the opposite!)
