Lars Steenhoff got a reaction from greenscreen in Sigma FP - 4k RAW Dynamic Range
Dynamic range seems fine in raw, just protect the highlights and pull the shadows in post if needed

Lars Steenhoff got a reaction from Stathman in Sigma Fp review and interview / Cinema DNG RAW
Went into the garden to test the new firmware
I opened the CDNG's in photoshop, shot at full-frame with the Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar® T* 3.5-4.5/28-70, I'm happy with the results.
all shot at 25 fps with firmware 2.0

The CDNG's are never sharpened, but they are line skipped/binned at the higher frame rate 100fps, I will check at 60fps, I think that will be better.

Lars Steenhoff reacted to zerocool22 in Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K
My main worry is the DR and highlight rolloff, but nobody is letting this cat out of the bag right now.
All the video's so far have bad looking DR, shirts, faces with blown out parts. Amazed nobody is talking about that, prolly still busy counting all those pixels or running around in the desert trying to overheat the camera...

Same data rate as the sigma fp, but at 8k dci instead of 4k
Only time will tell if the internal storage will get cheaper soon, good thing they already have 2tb cards for it.

Clearly environmental factors play a role... Andrew K @5:06 says that over the three days he had with the R5, the camera did not overheat.

What about enviromental temperature, yes in the desert you will overheat quickly, this does not mean it will overheat in a siberian winter too.
This should be tested in realworld environments to see how bad it is

Well I dont think I will ever run into the problem. I dont shoot long clips + where I live the temperature rarely exceeds 23 degrees.

Maybe Canon will come out with an ice pack option:

Why are we bashing Canon for including 8k raw INTERNALLY? They also could have just left it at that, but also included All-I and IPB in 8K - a pretty amazing inclusion. Add on to that that they do give you all of the great internal 10-bit codecs (All-I and IPB) in 4K and HD and up to 120fps in 4K, why are we complaining?
If you don't want the giant file sizes, just use one of the other modes. Solved AND you still get 10-bit 422. If you want the highest quality and don't care about thousands of dollars of storage, use raw and All-I.
Or use every other camera manufacturer (outside of Panasonic) and just shoot in 8-bit 420 up to 30fps or to an external recorder.
What Canon has done with these two cameras is pretty mind-blowing. I thought the S1H would be king (and in some ways it still is) for another year or two, but these cameras are close to top of the heap.
Yes, I would have preferred the Canon R6 to have 4k raw at much smaller file sizes, but hard to complain when they have given us so much in a seriously compact form factor. I love the S1H, but it won't ever be my photo camera due to size and weight, so the R5 could easily become both video and photo for me (or the R6).

I also like BlackMagic 4K Film to Rec709 V3 for a quick grade and using your setup in Camera Raw which is IMHO 100% the correct way to work with CInemaDNG files.

Use "color mode off"for monitoring exposure in raw.
It gives the most accurate image for zebra's
And if you use an external monitor you can load the LUT for the final intended look.

Thanks for explaining the steps to achieve a proper lut, I may look into making one at some point
Right now I'm not too worried about achieving the final look at shooting time myself, I just want to know if I'm exposing properly.
The rest I can deal with in Resolve

Wonder if Long GOP codec is improved? Or is ALL-I still the way to go. I'll do some shooting tomorrow.

Lars Steenhoff reacted to Vintage Jimothy in FDTimes "sin-sin" director interview (Sigma Fp RAW)
Incredible read. I got a good laugh when the author immediately referenced The 400 Blows and Yamanaka-san confirmed that it had been an influence on Sin-Sin, because that movie was the first thing that came to my mind after watching the short.
Also, holy cow this short was originally set to debut at Cannes. I was already gushing over how great the short was compared to other company shorts made to promote a new camera in one of the other FP threads, but that little nugget of info speaks volumes as to how good it is compared to what else we typically see done to promote these types of cameras.
Sigma hit a homerun with the cinematic qualities of the FP. While there's definitely a number of things they can do to improve for the next model, I'm very happy to see just how stellar a camera they made with the FP.

I know everyone here only shoots raw, but MOV files from the fp have a lot of potential, if not for the moire issues. It is *bad* in real-world usage, especially with foliage or any fine pattern. It disappears COMPLETELY when shooting MOV with the new Color Off mode, so I really believe it is mostly an issue with sharpening being applied in-camera. I thought it may also have been the lack of OLPF, but I can't seem to provoke any artifacts whatsoever when using Color Off, so I'm almost positive it's a sharpening issue.
