Thanks for posting Aaron.  Took in the film today.  I enjoyed it.  Action filled.  The cinematography is amazing.
Not sure if this link has been posted too.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTazMnFF-Rs

Awesome link, @AaronChicago. Saw it last night in 3d, and it was a visceral, visual feast. everything I was hoping for, and I left the theater super pleased with the film. It was just a really good time. I have certainly have some critiques but, overall, I really enjoyed it.

Thats really why I like it. Sometimes I find the less plot or story the better. (loved Sucker Punch for the same reason) I don't think Mad Max 2 had much of a story either. Loved it as well. Don't think the new one ruins the old ones at all.

After buying the Blackmagic Production a Global Shutter is my #1 priority. I can of course not always get it but I will trade it for Resolution and even DR at any given moment.
After evaluation of what I missed in the Production Camera and what I wanted to add to the Pocket Camera it was clear as a summer morning. The D16 already had it all.
The Organic texture, the motion and the color combined is the most filmic looking stuff I ever shot.
Im actually going to start experimenting with how to get it to not look like film, in case I would need it.
And spec wise it holds up very well. 5 hours internal battery, analog audio gain, 2h internal storage, above HD res, Raw, we all know the rest. Short story is that it's a serious piece of kit.
Of course there is trade offs but so has every camera. Its just about figuring if one can deal with them.
In the next firmware that's being tested right now is also background off load and last clip deletion.

here's the thing about the sony f35 since I have two of them - you can record 12 bit 444 DPX files out of them into the odyssey 7q and it has a lot of professional features like XLR inputs and multiple hd sdi outputs
the digital bolex looks absolutely amazing - that footage was gorgeous - I think the only issue I saw was the video noise in the image - but that's pretty minor - all the footage I'm seeing looks incredible - I just wish the camera was built better - with removable ssd cards or cfast cards and a viewfinder that's more logical.
her skintone - her face was gorgeous - I would be curious about this camera - but also though you have to have a viewfinder and all that too
anyway the d21 is really lovely too - it's a 250 ASA camera though - the f35 is 640 ASA (that's what I rate it) - also I rate the red dragon at 320 ASA - the OLPH sensor - I rate camera's ASA based on my own artistic likes and wants in highlights and shadows. I don't listen to the "camera makers" - but
motion to me is also really important, so is natural sharpness, resolution, skin tones, highlight handling, and the userbility of the camera and the weight
a lot of factors - paired with lenses and filtration and you have tons of variables.  Also I like how it gets people to use vintage glass on their cameras.
also the control over the image you can output - so many amazing things to obsess over.
also motion is magic - digital cameras may have a global or mechanical or rolling shutter - but it's also the compression and resolution of the sensor and how it interpolates this data that creates the motion feeling -  one camera's 180 degree shutter will feel different than another on many complex algorithms.
also the look of film - we are seeing it thru a telecine - we aren't watching 35mm film prints anymore - we know and love about film is how it got processed in its pipeline to digital or vhs or dvd or blu ray. degredation of the image this way.  so film is complex too.
this is all digital, nothing is organic - this isn't as simple as a bunch of photos taken together 24 frames a second - it's how the codec and interpoloation of all that data comes together and streams together to make motion and also how we view this motion on our monitors or iphones or god knows what.
Before I shoot a movie I do tests then project and now projection doesn't even matter - it's how it looks on a tiny iphone.

    They are not tv spots.
BMW hire out a race track in south Portugal to test soon to launch models. We shoot promo stuff that gets sent out to various big players in the industry to start wetting the appetite.
We have used GoPros, then when we moved to GH4, people noticed the quality upgrade.... Pulling photos is also part of the process, so 12 stops would help. We have to shoot in some really harsh daytime sun. Maybe the XC10 can take it up yet another level? I look forward to testing it.
Would I prefer a larger sensor, a nice F2.0 12-35mm lens,,,, hell yea,,, but I do see uses for this niche camera.
The BM micro would be a dream for 1080p, for our needs though, 4K is a must

I do drone work for BMW mate... Not excatly enthusiast level.
In the real world, DR and image quality counts. GoPro will not be enough for clients like BMW, but the nnature of the work doesn't allow for RED/Octo level budget.
GH4 is good, we use it often... Why not try something that could be better though?

i´ve send a mail to BM and asked whether its only uhd monitoring or 4k downscale recording too, that was the answer:
    Hi Christoph,

    Thanks for getting in touch.

The information that is available about the video Assist at the moment indicates that it will only offer UHD monitoring, not recording.

this may change between now and when the product gets released, however information is limited about this at the moment.

    Many thanks.

I can assure you it is not.
They have indeed enabled raw video. At what frame rate and at what maximum resolution for continuous recording has yet to be determined.
What sort of headline would have satisfied you sir?
"Nikon Hacker Enables Raw Video And Further Development Needed To Determine Final Usable Form It Takes Along With Resolution And Frame Rate And File Sizes And Whether It Will Arrive On the Nikon D750 Or The Soon To Be Rumoured D900 Please Wait To Find Out More"
Is that specific enough for you?
    Headline writing lesson for Araucaria.
    A headline such as that above isn't a headline. It's a sentence.
The purpose of a headline is to grab attention with as few words as possible.
    For example:
    Forum User Is Negative Wanker
    That's a brillaint headline.

Developer "leegong" of Nikon Hacker has made enormous progress in getting raw video from the live view function of the Nikon D5100. Early builds of the patch output raw frames to the card and A1ex of Magic Lantern has written a prototype / test DNG converter.

Yeah getting a single from the image buffer is the first step, but nowhere near full video out. I wish these guys the best though and hope they pull it off, love shooting my D800 with their hacked bitrate firmware. Getting RAW on that camera would be a dream.

andrgl reacted to reggeee in Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera: does it make sense to buy it now?
First off, Blackmagic did themselves a great disservice by calling it the "pocket" camera. That name led everyone to believe it was a "point and shoot". While technically it is, if you are shooting professionally, it isn't. And really, a pro wouldn't expect it to be anything more than what it is. It's a small compact platform that produces pro quality (all be it cropped sensor) images. But as with any pro camera, there are support accessories required. ALL pro cameras require external batteries. 45 minutes on a battery is pretty standard stuff. All pro cameras require external monitors for viewing and focusing. So does the BMPCC.  The images this little camera produces are amazing. i've used it extensively to shoot background plates to put behind arri raw foreground elements. beautiful results. If you want to be happy with this camera, buy a good external battery or two, an atomos ninja for recording and viewing and for 3K or less, You've got an amazing B cam than can be a saving grace on any set. If you're looking for a point and shoot.......stick with the GH4

Yes, in this two days I tested the Pocket I started to questioning my normal workflow and I started to look at this little camera like a "teacher": I have to plan more before shooting and to be more pragmatic in the exact moment I have to shoot. That's good, because limitations always push me to better results and to be more creative.

Of course the Pocket is something I have to get used to, but I'll start using for some personal projects, then I'll try to use it for the works I normally use GH4.

Thank you very much Alex (and all you guys!)

I agree. I still love using this camera, especially when I see how flexible the image is to grade. Feels akin to what a 2.0 darkroom would be like.

I started creating a tutorial for good skin tones on the A7S- higher priority projects have taken my time. There a many ways to get good skin tones on the A7S- creating custom profiles can help, though stock PP6 can work very well as is. Slog2 gamma with Pro or Cinema also works well. It is possible to get good skin tones with the A7S using Resolve and no LUTs at all: everything from scratch (scopes are indeed helpful). Casey posted some test images shot in Slog2 on dvxuser. Here is the thread: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?334239-a7s-skin-tones-slog2-vs-pp-off-(shogun-4k) (IIRC, account login required to view images). Here are the stock Slog2+Sgamut images:

Here are my grades (no LUTs- just the basic tools in Resolve):

More blue to separate the foreground actor from the background, also changes the mood:

    Casey's PP Off shot:

I prefer graded Slog2+Sgamut vs. PP Off. I use mostly tweaked Slog2 + Pro color and CINE1/CINE2/CINE4 + Pro or Cinema (tweaked).
Casey also created some useful Stock PP7 (Slog2+SGamut) LUTS: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?334831-a7s-slog2-3d-luts (based on the F65/55 LUTs).

Doubt SSD would happen in a future 4K recorder, but instead CFast. However having CFast *and* SD would be nice. Recording the main 4K ProRes HQ to the CFast card, with the SD for a backup ProRes 422 1080p.
