The whole 5 pages of this topic is why pre-production models and firmware makes zero sense to me. How am I supposed to get anything from these videos if everything they show is subject to change? How am I supposed to know if the jerky warpy IBIS is just pre-prod firmware or will be there in the camera I can ACTUALLY buy? How can I make a decision about the autofocus performance when everyone says "oh it's just pre-prod firmware it will be improved"?
All I can get from these videos is that the camera looks nice, but I could also take it from reading a spec sheet and looking at the images online. Everything else isn't representative of what I'll find in the store.

I just want a GH5 with proper autofocus.

In the UK the other day there was a news piece on this guy... Karl Popper
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradox_of_tolerance
It's interesting because it shows the paradox of today's liberal society...
The US society is tolerant enough to allow the display of nazi flags outside houses under free speech laws and right wing protests in the streets under expensive police escorts, and it's tolerant enough to allow these people to arm themselves with several automatic weapons at once.
The more tolerant we become, the more the door opens to the intolerant ones, the more freedom they have to wreak havoc and destroy tolerance. So Karl Popper argued (in 1945 no less) that for a society to be truly tolerant it has to be "intolerant of intolerance".
I suppose in the case Ed raised of alleged discrimination by a photo company, we shouldn't tolerate it, he's right on that. But I am also against building a wall between us and every single person in the company because of the wrongdoings of a few of their management, and I still really don't know if Ed is talking about a shop or a manufacturer.
I suppose the point of Ed's post was to get us all talking and I'm fine with a bit of politics every now and again.
I just don't agree that race has much to do with talking about cameras. It's a privilege but not just a white one.

Kingswell reacted to mercer in NETFLIX: Which 4K Cameras Can You Use to Shoot Original Content? (missing F5! WTH?!?)
I am warming to the idea of a GH5, but I'm not ready to pull the trigger on one yet. There's definitely some better material popping up from it now.
I still think the 5D3 with ML Raw looks more cinematic and filmic but as a run and gun cinema camera, the GH5 is a great tool.
Now if it gets approved by Netflix, and I decided to make a feature, I guess it would make sense to shoot it on a GH5 as a sales tool for the film...
I'll just have my people call Mr. Netflix and tell him I made a not horrible film but at least it meets his tech requirements...
That's a pretty good pitch, right?

Kingswell reacted to aldolega in Panasonic G85 review - is there any need to get an Olympus E-M1 Mark II for video?
I have a BMCC booster on my GH4 (I got a good deal on it and the XL wasn't out at the time). It presses on the shutter housing, which inhibits the shutter's motion. As a result I can't shoot photos with it, or manually white balance with it. I've been planning to sell it off and get the XL, as that's the same "strength" but clears the GH4 shutter, but with the GH5 having full-sensor 4K and IBIS, I think I'm going to get an Ultra instead.
This of course isn't a direct answer to what the BMCC booster will be like on the G85, sorry. But personally I wouldn't risk it.
Something else to consider is that the BMCC and BMPCC boosters have optical designs meant for Blackmagic's much thinner sensor glass. Panny and Olympus m4/3 cameras have more than twice the glass thickness over the sensor, and the XL and other m4/3 boosters are designed for this.

I can see this is pushing creative thinking to the brink. The fact is they are doing a lot of construction and planting to prepare for the summer or as a part of the planned expansion of the gardens, and there is an area I took both camera--and noticed the problem after that---but the LCD was covered with a viewfinder on both camera--I was shooting hand held, and I never bag the camera. What's more the sensor was covered by a speed booster the entire time--but the sensors seem fine--nice and clean, so it's not even a part of the equation. Really, there's nothing at all I did that is different from what I've done for years. It's frigging crazy!
The white specks are odd shaped, randomly placed, and seem to be inside the LCDs---not on the outside surface like some kind of mold. The EVF shows the image perfectly---and as long as the video is not affected I'm content to live with it as long as it doesn't metastasize--but I sure would like to know how the hell this happened and what it actually is--and if anyone else has seen anything like it. I've owed a number of cameras and been shooting for quite a while, and I've never seen anything like this on one camera--let alone two of two different brands, which are both new---really new--- and well cared for. And besides, I always thought the LCDs were sealed. Right?
PS: Love the a6500--would love it more in a better body with a larger battery.
There was a smoking man I noticed hanging around the begonias.

Kingswell reacted to independent in Ursa mini...is this the end of blackmagic?
Give Blackmagic credit. First, they're a relatively tiny manufacturing operation. They deadlifted their chances of success in a tough market. Samsung left, for crying out loud. Digital bolex, done. A few others tried too, and failed.
Blackmagic brought innovative products at an accessible price point - many of us are direct beneficiaries of that. Years ago, I replaced my red scarlet with the fresh BMCC, which had a better overall image with far less fuss. And the camera was ready to shoot at a cost 1/10th of the price of the red scarlet, which itself was the cheapest real cinema camera at the time.
And even if you don't like their prroducts, you still benefitted indirectly from that. Blackmagic is an industry disrupter. They put a lot of pressure on a lot of companies (Red immediately responded with a failed 4K for 4K campaign) and raised the quality and features of competing products.
Don't forget the fact that Blackmagic also offered a class grading software free with Davinci resolve (again disrupting the industry) as well as integrating a NLE into it (again disrupting the industry).
All their moves have helped the independent filmmaker.
Yes, they've had delays (not nearly as bad as RED) and some minor flaws (that other companies had too), but these are the growing pains of a small company. They don't have the resources that Canon and Sony have for QC and supply chain management. If they raised prices that would obviously help, but they're intentionally pricing their stuff very aggressively.
They're probably operating at a loss or very slim margins to stay in the game. If they go under...that would be a painful loss. Because they are approaching products with an intelligence and practicality that are sorely lacking in the competition.
The ursa mini 4.6k is not for extreme low-light situations, or autofocus, or drone work, but for traditional filmmaking, there is nothing out there that provides a comparable image at its price point.
This forum has a lot of dslr/mirrorless users, who complain a ton about their image. What's funny, so many of their complaints are answered....with blackmagic cameras. Color science, simple straightforward menus, no overheating, motion cadence, filmic, thick codecs, etc. It's all right there.

Not enough times for some people, judging by the way they are STILL going on about this again and again. Here's how Philip Bloom has started responding to this "just use a cinema EOS / insert video camera name here" bullshit -
"thats such a boring, dull, oft repeated, lazy. apologist and close minded comment! Smaller cameras like this are incredibly important...gimbal work and documentary work for example PLUS the whole joy of 5Dmk2 when it came out was FULL FRAME. There are NO full frame video cameras. I should have this reply on copy and paste."

Ever since I started EOSHD people have been saying "just use a camcorder" blah blah blah it's a stills camera not a video camera
    It totally misses the point!

I'd buy an F3 as a B or C camera, but not as a main camera these days. Wouldn't go higher than a £1k for it.

It's a really great camera, has built in XLRs, I really like slog1 and sgamut - and man for the price, it's a great deal.
Is it better than the canon 1dx which is probably now cheaper at the same price?
Or the blackmagic MCC or pocket?
That's where you need to do some testing.
    Check motion, color, etc.
I think at this point a rigged out BMPCC with a nice monitor maybe a good alternative too.
If you need the extra resolution.
Anyway it's any interesting time to be alive.

100% wrong Ed. Radiologists are medical doctors specialising in detecting and curing disease via medical imaging techniques. Maybe you're thinking of radiographers who are trained (degree level) to perform X-Rays, MRIs and CT scans, so it's nothing to be snobbish about.

This is yet another example of where I think in some ways we have actually gone backwards with this whole race/gender thing. Where ’progressivism’ becomes effectively re-gressivist, instead of just evolving society beyond such things.
The example that stands out was whole deal about Finn in the Star Wars movie- I have never in my life once thought about the skin color of stormtroopers. Faceless fodder, no attention paid. But in 2015, it’s a call to war for both smug, insufferable race-baiters and actual, real racists to rage endlessly on about. Instead of, oh wow, putting a face on a Stormtrooper, that could be interesting, the actual discussion being had make me take note of the skin color, whereas I would have never thought about any of it in the first place.
And apparently, nothing much has changed in 2016. I don’t care who you cast; I have little interest in any Ghostbusters without Bill Murray, and I’d assume many others feel the same. But that doesn’t stop the race(gender)-baiters and the real sexists (although sans 12yo YouTube trolls, I doubt many actually exist) from entirely shaping that’s the discussion here.
Oh really? Go point out those terrible, awful, hurtful misogynistic comments. Oh wait it's a YouTube comment section, where anyone who's been on the internet for more than two days knows as a cesspool of tween-age trolling.
I'm not reading a whole YouTube thread, but the comments on the first page are hardly "obvious misogyny" when the majority of them are basically "this sux, stop ruining classic movies hollywood" or obvious blatant trolling and baiting.

I thought Ghostbusters was a comedy. Just watched the original and Pt.2 last week, they were funny even though the sequel was an obvious cash grab. RIP Harold Ramis, was hoping they would get together for a Pt. 3 as it seemed like Murray was hinting about the possibility, but his passing meant that was never going to happen.
Don't care about the gender of the cast, comedies should be funny. The trailer isn't funny at all and it looks like the reboot is exactly what I thought it would be -- Bridesmaids (not funny either) ripping off a classic. Melissa McCarthy = Adam Sandler to me, can't stand either one.
I'll wait for the DVD on Netflix.
Many of the comments are from morons, the anonymity of inter web strikes again. But this one was funny: "Sony next venture is telling the story of the black panthers...staring 4 white dudes"

Kingswell reacted to sanveer in GoPro stock plummets 90% in less than a 1.5 years
There are far more innovative GoPro options out there. The GoPro expanded too much as a company in terms of size, and very little in terms of innovation and competitive pricing. Despite so many resources and so much experience at hand.
There is absolutely no reason that they cannot make much cheaper and better action cams. At the end of the day, the sole reason GoPro came into being, was because they had super affordable cams, that could withstand some element of punishment. They now make far more expensive cameras  (especially compared to the Kickstarter and IndieGoGo Funded and Chinese Made ones), that offer very little above the older ones. As a matter of fact a friend of mine is part of a startup that is bringing out an action cam in the form factor of a watch.
Basically GoPro needs to get back to having a Lean team, and having salaries related to profits  (I am guessing the Top guys take a few millions in salaries now).

Otherwise it will be another Kodak.

    Only Olympus do effective stabilisation.
Only Panasonic do cheap 4K in Micro Four Thirds cam
Only Fuji do a film-inspired shooting experience (although Olympus run them close)
Only Sony max out the specs and do a full frame mirrorless camera
Only Samsung do a really responsive fast ergonomic DSLR-style mirrorless camera
Only Canon... I mean only Magic Lantern do raw video.

The A7S II is closest to the perfect camera but the handling is just...so soulless.
Currently I am thinking of keeping hold of the E-M5 II as a stills camera, second to the NX1 and A7S II as my main video cameras.

The A7R II review will start with boxing footage... a good test for rolling shutter, motion cadence and whether the colour comes out as nice as the 1D C which I will bring with me as well!!
Then A7R II versus A7S in low light... this is one thing giving me pause for thought "shall I wait 6 months for the A7S II?"
Then versus 1D C shot A-B comparison, especially with regards to colour and what it is like to grade!
I think the 120fps mode should be interesting vs NX1 and GH4. RX10 II will probably beat it there.
Let's see if moire is a problem vs 1D C which is very clean.
And I also have the Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q to test the HDMI output. Wonder if it is better than the one on the A7S which had issues especially with S-LOG and the smudgy APS-C upscaling to 4K.
