I'm with you man. I'm loving the BMMCC footage way more than the Ursa 4.6K. A good analogy of how I feel: You're driving down a highway looking for an exit with a good place to eat. You pass 3 or 4 exits thinking you'll find something better soon. Suddenly you're at the edge of a town and realized you passed up the best option. You turn the car around and go back an exit to the best choice.
For camera tech we've been chasing the perfect camera and I believe we've hit the point where it's passed "the sweet spot" and we're taking back a notch to find the best images.

EDIT: Image quality is subjective, but I'm speaking for the people who want something similar to 16/35mm film. The classic look.

Remember folks that LENS choice has a HUGE impact.
The 4k cameras can very easily suffer from TOO sharp an image. That's one reason the NX1 usually dosn't look nearly as smooth as the 1DC or the BMPCC. The Samsung lenses can be extremely sharp.

Motion cadence is unique to each camera maker usually.
Some folks can see the difference, others can't.
If you ask enough people, the Blackmagic Cinema and Pocket cameras frequently rank very high, as do the Canons if they are shooting an all I-Frame codec

Having seen many test comparisons done, I can tell you this - you'd be shocked by how similar many cameras can look when you put the exact same lens on them and shoot the exact same scene.

Alright,  I've about had it with all this nonsense, tell you what,  I'm going to sitdown this afternoon fire up my engineering workstation and create a brand new stabilizer that will blow this away. That way we can stop this silly thread once and for all.
Expect my product on kickstarter... Mark my words, it will work, it will cost less and it will be easy to use. And everyone will want one. This camera stabilization thing is not really that tough of a nut to crack.

Plus you'd be forced to pay for those components, even if you don't need them. With BM, you can shoot as stripped down or as rigged up as you want.

Exactly! If they put all that stuff in it would double the price and more importantly it would never be released because they would never finish it.

But it won't have Raw, Prores, 13 stop DR, as cinematic colors or a global shutter.
Quite a few trade of for a remote control, which can be bought third party anyway.

Astral photography isn't the first thing I think of when I consider the type of photographer I am, but the experience of researching and going to this spot and tirelessly researching the techniques it took to get this shot I think really does sum me up. This is why I love this forum and what Andrew has done with EOSHD. I'm constantly reading what you all share and love the community aspect of being a creative person in this day and age. I very easily could've died getting this shot as I almost was bitten by a rattlesnake in the dark when helping another photographer with her camera settings. Makes it an even more memorable experience for me.

    Thanks mate!
Here in the USA, under that section called "UPGRADE THIS VIDEO" - beneath it "Choose the HD format(s) for this video" is now greyed out and I cannot make any selection.
But here's the biggest problem, as I wrote originally:

"To be certain - ANYTIME I have watched any of YOUR Vimeo videos recently, my stream defaulted to their "Auto" setting EVEN THOUGH THE "HD" INDICATOR WAS STILL ON.
My system and connection plays 1080p perfectly smoothly all day long - and ALL of YOUR videos are displaying at a drastically reduced quality for me because of this "Auto" YouTube-style setting."

When I say "drastically" I mean LESS than 720p.

It won't "say" what it is because it just says "Auto" until I go in and change it to one of the other quality sizes.

Again - we PAY for the ability to control; that - YouTube already has that "default to 'Auto' thing"  and so for many of us Vimeo users it is the ONLY reason we PAY for Vimeo instead.

If viewers are going to randomly get DEGRADED playback streams ONLY UNLESS they take the extra step and go in to the playback settings and change that - then what the hell am I paying for - that's already YouTube.
But we know that MANY users won't do that EVERY SINGLE TIME. And we also know that that choice is very often not even available if the video has been embedded.

My R1 has windowed modes for slowmo. IMO its all good. Im not experiencing any "issue" with it.
And also, its a crop, so no line skipping or slowmo-aliasing like previous cameras Ive owned.
My point I guess is, don't let it ruin an otherwise "perfect" camera (if thats your only beef that is).

The Raven's EOS only mount and crop is ridiculous at this level of investment. I'm interested going Red when I get higher end, but Super 35 or bust.

Used Epic with the Mysterium-X sensor. That's what I have my sights on currently. Rented a kit last week. Blown-the-fuck-away.
You're right Oliver. Dat redcode is so thick and dense.
Fuck it, even at $20K, it's a cam I can use for the next decade: 16-ish usable stops with HDRx. 120 FPS 4K, RAW format... Bonkers.

Got a great deal on a new BMPCC during a Black Friday sale for nearly 50% off. It's my first Blackmagic camera (I have the Micro pre-ordered) and have been eager to pair it with the Trump lens set I ordered from Richard Gale. I took possession of the set a couple weeks ago and have started shooting a short film with it. I love the versatility in terms of contrast control (from standard to ultra-low) and the variety of aperture discs. The 2x and 3x ovals are my favorite. Made a quick comparison of the two here.
But this week I finally started shooting a short I've wanted to do for some time. I work professionally as a freelance editor so this project is being done as schedules allow. Shooting RAW has been an eye-opener for me. For the last year I've been trying to wrestle a GH4 into being something it just wasn't capable of. And have come to the conclusion that I should have traded 4K for color science and dynamic range a long time ago.

Dont know about the D5 or D500 but the D750 has 13 usable stops. Neck and neck with the bmcc raw in my side by side test.

Probably going to be the Ursa Pocket or something. Maybe an ND adapter/module for Ursa.
Whatever market gap exists now, Blackmagic are on it now - shipping in July.
To be honest, it would be more respectful to not release any cameras and make the Ursa Mini 4.6k the best thing ever in cameras ever made ever.

I love it. I've rigged it out to be just heavy enough to avoid micro-jitters. And I loving how skin tones are rendered. I struggled to get the GH4 someplace it didn't want to go for six months. Should have traded resolution for color and DR a long time ago. I'm much happier.

Yeah, it's likely that store says "sold out" because they don't have any inventory (for obvious reasons). HOWEVER!!....
This might be the first actual functioning BMMCC in the wild. by way of Noam Kroll.

It looked great, as his stuff usually does. Interesting little story, even though the writer in me thinks the video shot of her should have been in the present, since Noam already introduced a supernatural element when the stalker vanished into thin air. But I digress, it looked great... If only it had an LCD.
