  1. Probably the silliest auction yet, broken, missing all the anamorphic glass, fungus, everything royally f**ked. A bargain at $1700.   -_-   Just absurd: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LOMO-Zoom-Anamorphic-lens-35opf19-1a-for-Konvas-Kinor-Arri-Red-/360615187571?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item53f6571473
  2.   Are we betting on this? Cos I do like a dead cert... ;)
  3. I might get myself a box room above a kebab shop, unless I pull the trigger on the penthouse above the Shard :D
  4. Indeed, The last innovation was the 550D really, because it brought the shallow DOF S35 video of the 7D to a budget body. The best of that bunch is the 600D with crop mode and flip out screen, and Magic Lantern.   Since then, only the 5D MKiii has actually improved on video quality. That's expensive, the C series of video cameras are extortionate.   Unless they depart radically with the 7D MKii or a similar DSLR leaning towards video, we can't hope for anything other than the disappointing 720p for double frame rate, and huge price if you want aliasing-free video without an after-market filter.   Taking 720/50p out of the C100 just to separate the C300 was just scandalous really, considering their cheap SLRs do it from an 18MP sensor. I don't think anyone could quite believe the level of "f**k you" in that camera!   And as you quite rightly say, how can we expect anything like innovation when they refuse to even come close to matching the other companies, and even hold back their top-of-the-line C500 unless you use external recording?   It's just so disappointing, from the people who started it all in the first place.
  5. Sigh    I don't get it... I mean... why bother?
  6. Seconded, try Grain 35 or FilmConvert for starters. Great ways to make your footage look film-like and remove unwanted banding. Like an organic version of "dithering".
  7. 100% inevitable and equally tiring. I think it's best we all ignore it and teach them a lesson ;)
  8. Why not try the 5R of those two choices? Cheap enough, takes any lens, good quality video and nice and compact! That'd be my pick of those two.
  9. simpleDOF is good for depth of field calculations.   My most used app is Artemis. It's a viewfinder that simulates the field of view of various lenses and sensors. Saves me getting the wrong prime out.   Helios is quite brilliant at predicting the golden hour. I've used this on nearly every shoot.   Those are all iOS, but I'm sure there's similar for Android. Well, perhaps.
  10. I missed the UK screening of this, I wish they'd do it again!
  11. View here:   http://www.hsilondon.co.uk.php5-20.dfw1-1.websitetestlink.com/cat/music-videos/director/walker-matthew/benga-ft-kano---forefather-1916     The ultra wide aspect ratio bubble must be about to burst in promo land. Taylor Swift, Hurts, now this Benga video. Any wider and you won't be able to watch it on a normal monitor!
  12. Interesting... yet more power to PR just like in music. I can upload an album tomorrow to Spotify, iTunes and Amazon via a distribution company. But no one will buy it unless they know about it.   It doesn't change who is in charge of the media that spreads knowledge of content, it just means you don't have to go through a filter to have it hosted. The hard part is making people aware of it and watch it... that's how none of the big labels are dead yet, they still control it.   So it's positive, but it doesn't change the world, same as digital distribution of music didn't.   Remember when they pretended Lily Allen "made it" via MySpace, when actually she'd been on a major-label development deal for years (doubtless through her father's contacts)? I expect similar stories in film...   But then the arts becoming colonised by the children of the elite and wealthy is a different subject.   Either way, curation is more valuable now than ever. I like festivals because they're often well picked. Wading into the sludge of online music or film can be quite a negative experience, there are more minutes I wish I could have back than films I would have paid for... but there were some gems... so perhaps some people who otherwise wouldn't have, will make a living from it.   interesting.
  13.   An undeniable fact, and the reason I'm happy to ignore most of what they pump out! Personally I don't want to watch their films, work for them, or really have anything to do with them, so I'm kinda happy this way! :)
  14. It's a shame they didn't do SD at 200fps, that was my favorite speed on the FS700
  15. Cheers guys! Now i feel that the empathy with the main character could be improved, the intro is a little long and the pacing is off, but I still enjoy it!   Thom and I are working together on some more videos soon so I'll be sure to share...
  16. A lot of these analyses assume that the world of film is going one way: to VFX driven pieces. None of my favorites last year included many VFX at all, just small things to compliment good storytelling. I'm not interested in big CG blockbusters. I'll watch then if a friend torrents them, but I wouldn't even make that effort myself, let alone sell an organ for a cinema ticket in order to get a sterescopically induced headache.    Give me a film like The Hunt or The Master though, and I'll be at the cinema every time. One Alexa one 65mm. Both awesome to look at.
  17. hmm. Seems like an afterthought of a feature...
  18. I'm sure I'll buy from such a retailer at some point again, especially if I go for 5D MKiii, as it's about £400 cheaper. But I don't think I'll use one that's appeared yesterday and has a business registered to a residential address in a random British town like a few of them do. It always pays to google...
  19. With regard to price and staff, agreed, that's why Jessops closed here in the UK. Angry college kids or odd blokes who lived with their mum, all stuck on minimum wage and selling you kit at a huge markup. I didn't work on any level. They once asked for £40 for an HX9v battery. I actually laughed! It was quite ironic that staff posted notes about "thanks for supporting Amazon" when in fact the growth of Jessops is what wiped out the majority of knowledgable independant camera shops through buy outs and fierce competition in pre-Internet times.
  20. Don't get me wrong, 20% tax is absurd, as is adding duty. Also I've never used a warrant yet. But the point of the post is that some of these look distinctly fly-by-night and dodgy! B&H, Digital Rev, these grey guys have been going forever. But every time I search there seems to be a new one. I think people should be careful...
  21. https://vimeo.com/18743558   After completing a few fesitvals, we've made this short film public now. It was shot a couple of years ago all on 550D. That was before I used Magic Lantern, mosaic filter, knew half of what I do now!    We're still pretty happy with it now, though we're also confident of doing better on the next one.   It was also way before Black Mirror ;)

    Grey imports

Has anyone noticed just how many grey importers there are now in the UK for camera gear?   This is the latest to appear in search terms.    The stylish Union Flag at the top and stock photo of businessmen really inspire confidence... LOL   jeez... 20% VAT really is taking its toll   http://www.igadjit.co.uk/about-us-1-w.asp
