Emanuel reacted to Caleb Genheimer in TSA bans cameras in cabin baggage, on flights to the US from 13 countries
NSA agent here, can confirm: @Orangenz's body is a flawless Greco-Roman specimen that would make any Renaissance artist worth their salt spontaneously break out chisel and hammer to immortalize it in marble glory.
Also, he carries his keys in his front right pocket.

Until Edward Bernays effectively created 'Public Relations' based on concepts from his uncle, Sigmund Freud, marketing was based on people's actual needs. Bernays changed everything and marketing evolved into emotion and fantasy-illusion based and thus the world has been changed. Now marketing is based on emotion and desire, and not actual need for daily living or survival.
The Universe Loves Drama, so combined with the emotional-fantasy-based social reality we now live in, explains the current behavior of social interaction, especially in social media. It's enough of a challenge for logical thinkers to effectively communicate with emotional thinkers (and neither side being able to communicate with the other). It becomes a deeper communication challenge with the added fantasy layer, which affects everyone at some level (including me: for example I too used to believe in the 'Full Frame' look until I studied the math and performed my own tests). What we really 'know' changes with time and it's important to remember that.
Another interesting social element is that most of the people discussing cameras, and all gear for that matter, spend far less time creating with the tools than focusing on the tools themselves. The tools become a form of entertainment in and of themselves: playing with them, doing 'tests', debating online, discussing deficiencies in the current model(s) and yearning for the new model(s), buying and selling, etc. And for perhaps the vast majority, not actually creating any content other than writing, discussing, and debating the tools in social media. This is not a judgement, rather an observation of another form of creating and fellowship of like-minded enthusiasts: people who focus on the tools themselves for entertainment vs. using the tools to create content, for entertainment or for a living. Every now and then someone will post, "get out and shoot people!", but that's not why most of the people are on these forums.
The GH5 of course is a major improvement and is an excellent content-creation tool. Is it a baby ARRI? Who knows, let's see some side-by-side tests as were done with Canon 5D3 RAW, which with 14-bit Canon color is indeed like a baby Alexa as shown by various tests done over the years.

Emanuel reacted to JazzBox in Panasonic GH5 starts shipping in 3 days. How's the 180fps slow-mo quality?
I sold my 5inch Video Assist after ecording both GH4 and G7 on it.
The files from GH4 were not really better then internal, the G7's were a lot worst. I tried on a second unity, same results. Not the same thing on an Atomos... so I sold it... (just my personal experience, nothing scientific).

Emanuel reacted to JazzBox in Panasonic GH5 starts shipping in 3 days. How's the 180fps slow-mo quality?
I tried on my G7 with my VA, and after the bad experience I tried with the same units from a colleague, also changing HDMI cable.
When recorded on the VA the G7 had a strong noise pattern. Not on the Atomos. But I cannot afford the Atomos, so I'm recording on SD and I'm very happy with the G7 (the only drawback is that you cannot use HDMI for monitoring, you can only record, while with GH4 you can do it).
Anyway I'm a big fan of Lumix quality, even if I love the BlackMagic ProRes from Micro Cinema Camera, which I sold for the unpractical (for me) workflow.
For the way I work, GH4 (which I sold in order to buy the GH5), G7 etc... are the best way and I love them.
I think that shooting with @andy lee settings you have the freedom to do pretty much what you want in post.
I tried to match G7 files with BlackMagic Micro (straight from the card) files in 5 minutes
.
I just can imagine what you can do with the new GH5 and a solid V-Log!
p.s.: Andy, what about GH5's 24p ProRes files playback/preview without transcoding? I tried Luke Neumann's files and I cannot played them in preview. Thank you!

Hey, my production company made this! Thanks for posting. The movie will be released this year on VOD.

Emanuel reacted to Juxx989 in New Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro looks great, but where's the new Pocket Cinema Camera?
Seems like they are trying to really change the game like maybe you keep the same body for years and they sell you a 6k sensor to stick in it in 2 years....
I just came across this vid
@ 30min he talks about URSA Pro he was sponsored by them last year and says he has some connections and claims BM is DEFENETLY releasing more gear at NAB
What else could it be? Must be BMPCC 2.0? or a capture card for Ipads...

Emanuel reacted to Hanriverprod in Ursa Mini Pro - BM will sell 20,000 of these
Has BMD addressed the magenta cast, corners and fpn even at 800 iso? If so, this camera looks like a beast for the price.
-
Emanuel reacted to Andrew Reid in Ursa Mini Pro - BM will sell 20,000 of these
Don't URSA Mini 4.6K EF owners get a hefty discount on the new camera, bringing it down to something like $3500 so I heard and you get to keep your existing camera.... bargain.
4.6K sensor looks nice, it's a custom design and not off the shelf scientific.
And the old Mini 4.6K is still nice.... Pro is just the same camera with NDs and more buttons!

Emanuel reacted to dantheman in Cinema5D slates the Panasonic GH5, calls V-LOG and 10bit "unusable" - They're wrong
I like Johnnie Behiri's mini-docs a lot when he tests new camera's and I wish more sites that do reviews would follow his example instead of only talk about a camera, pixelpeep and use blown up framegrabs. Ideally it should be a combination of both, a detailed test like Gordon Laing at cameralabs does but geared towards videofunctionality only and then add a nicely shot short documentary. Until that happens our only choice is to look at as many reviews and uservideos, try to filter out the crap and try to make a informed decision before buying to eventually find out the camera has flaws that have not been mentioned by anyone so far.

Emanuel reacted to Oliver Daniel in Panasonic GH5 - all is revealed!
The implementation of 10bit is the major benefit as compared to 8bit.
The codec, the processing, the data rate and sensor all play a factor - 10bit is not going to work at its full potential if these other factors are left behind.
The FS7 is a great example of well implemented 10bit. Absolutely superior to the FS5 in 10bit internal.
That said, with most watching video on smart devices - the "final" image quality of 10bit doesn't offer a huge, life-changing leap.
I'm caring much less about specs and focusing on improving the content in the frame.
Understanding light and composition is far more powerful in improving image quality. We're at that time now. The tools are awesome. Beyond enough.

It's like you invite someone over to a prescreening of a movie that hasn't been audio mastered, and instead of telling you that there were issues with audio and hearing what you have to say about it, they publish an article to the world saying the movie is unwatchable. Then they make assumptions and state that the audio issues probably can't be fixed. Should anyone ever let this guy prescreen movies ever?

At the end of the day, it will be the 4K 60P that most people will be buying it for. A feature currently not found in any other stills camera in that price range.

I haven't been following the GH5 drama nor do I regularly read cinema5D, but I do like that Johnnie Behiri's test videos are usually shot nicely often as mini-documentaries, with decent lighting etc rather than the somewhat random heavily graded montages that you usually see.

Some are more impartial than others, put it that way.
When you have personal relations with a nice man or nice woman from a marketing company or a camera company, you're not going to risk burning that bridge for the sake of a fully honest review which focuses on a number of negatives. You're just not.
Yes I myself have felt the pressure as well. I resisted and continue to do so.
If I cared about my relationship with people in the camera sales industry above the one I have with my own readers and followers, do you think I'd be blasting CInema5D on Twitter? I certainly wouldn't. For me though the blog is more important and shouldn't be 'sold' to the PR world.
It has indeed.
Well the latter part is fine by me. We can have different opinions based on experience and figure out which opinion suits our own experiences and how we intend to use the cameras we buy.
It doesn't.
Regardless, whether you call somebody out or not is a personal freedom.
Especially when it comes to your own blog and some flawed test that claims the rather wonderful GH5 is unusable.
The hype machine is very persuasive... These types of articles get the most attention.
The truth is there is no silver bullet, you cannot buy your way to filmmaking greatness with camera purchases.
But it helps to put your $1000, $2000 or $3000 on the right horse!!

That's one example. No sharpening nor noise reduction applied (-5 both).
I never saw any GH5 footage without any sharpening applied in camera, lol.
The only answer I got from these Panasonic marketing guys was like: "All the DOPs loved the sharpening"... WTF

Emanuel reacted to webrunner5 in Panasonic GH5 - all is revealed!
Hell I can't stand using them to make something for fun, I sure as hell can't see them as a main A camera in a 200 millon dollar film, with what little outward controls they have, not counting the cramped space, and no weight to talk about. I am sure it Can be done, but why? It's not like one person is just operating these high end cameras, they are surrounded by people. Now a guy up on a boom, well yeah, but that is not the Main camera all the time.
This Miller guy has to be one of the best graders of Pansonic stuff I have seen LoL. Is this camera, the GH5 That much better! 10 bit adds that much, and they are not even using the higher bit rate stuff. What gives?

Hey guys, no mention on film, cinematography and so on but there's something written right there to guarantee is PRO!
-
Emanuel reacted to Fritz Pierre in Panasonic GH5 - all is revealed!
No beef actually...but if you're shooting a feature with a reasonable budget, the cost of the crew is high....so I would default to something like the Varicam LT or another cinema camera as A-cam with the GH5 is B-cam...If I was shooting a short...or a commercial or extremely low budget film, I would use it without any hesitation...so, at some point it becomes an issue of false economy....up to the director to evaluate which is which....as far as GH cameras form factor, IMO in the world of hybrids the Pannys are unequalled....and as for the image....from what I've seen, I would not hesitate shooting with it next to a Varicam....

Emanuel reacted to sanveer in GH5 Noise Reduction @high ISOs simply sucks...
Actually, the EMD-1 Mark ii seems to have quite impressive noise reduction (on par if not better than the A6500). If Panasonic can replicate that, it would be amazing, especially for video.
