    sanveer reacted to canonlyme in GX80 in 2020? Graded AVCHD 24mbit 24p 28mbit 60p!
    Hey Guys,

Since starting in this forum I progressed from the GX80 to buying a Pocket 4k which I use for all documentary shoots and trying to built a showreel.
Meanwhile, the non rigged out GX80 is way easier to take on trips and fun shoots and I still think it is one of the most underrated cameras in terms of price/performance.

For the last trip to Loen in Norway (where a rock falling into the lake caused a 70m wave extinguishing to villages in early 1900), I took the gx80. Normally I shoot CINE D with all settings around -2, but this time I decided to shoot a dialed down natural, and furthermore I heard on youtube that AVCHD supposedly holds up way better to grading. So I tested it and used the internal noise reduction and grain from davinci.

What do you think? I am quite pleased with what I can get out of the 24mbit files, even with several nodes, vignettes etc. The opinion is well established that the Full HD on the gx80 seemed to look softer than on the g85 or g7. Even the slow-mo to me looks way better than what I am used to from the 24mbit 60p in mp4.
Way easier to edit than 4k as well and easy on the storage.

At 250 Dollars or Euros used, often including a lens, I think this camera is still a steal, especially for people in the mft ecosystem who need a second/third camera. In my backpocket I had a tascam dr05 to record audio and a short interview with a habitant of one of those villages.

Hey Andrew, what a great idea!
    1. my most used camera is the GX85 with either Fujinon Cmount 12.5mm 1.4 or boosted Canon FD 28mm F2.8. Most current camera is the Lumix S1 with different flavors of FD mount lenses like Vivitar 90mm Macro or Canon FD 20mm. Super fun focal lengths and lenses on the larger sensor. So here is a pic of my most recent camera which puts out an incredible image even in its 8bit 709 profiles, coupled with the Vivitar 90mm.

To this day I admire old school Eoshd articles and the film making essays of Tony Zhou, which are magnificiant for everyone who wants to learn film. Film making to me is a rather personal than industrial affair. I enjoy to be on creatively challenging sets with limited resources. Have been a gaffer for quiete a few gigs now and hope these guys don´t forget pay me back on my sets some day:)

Ah it's that age old argument again... if it doesn't shock you, it must be ok!

It seems we have found a man so apt at missing the point, that if the point was the size of Matterhorn he would still miss it.
The lab in Wuhan had a range of natural viruses and the animals carrying natural pathogens. If scientists believe SARS-CoV-2 to be of natural origins, that still does not disprove the theory it spread from a lab accident or corrupt trade in exotic animals.
Pangolins smuggled into China illegally have been found to contain viruses similar to the one now sweeping the world.
    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-52048195?fbclid=IwAR09mfAnXmBjClzGsLDiKh6PmdXJvMKSYbO4bpw_CtKYXRICw2l-jWDifwg

sanveer reacted to Andrew Reid in Creation of a chimaera
I should be editing my footage from the F1
However I can't get this out of my head... It's extraordinary...
In 2004 Chinese researchers in a lab working on SARS coronaviruses became ill. They had become effected with the very viruses they were researching. Suddenly SARS was back out in the community. Big scandal at the time but thankfully these workers were isolated immediately and SARS doesn't have a very big contagion vector. https://www.the-scientist.com/news-analysis/sars-escaped-beijing-lab-twice-50137
In 2013 researchers in China showed that one of the coronaviruses circulating in horseshoe bats could bind to human lung cells. The Chinese government didn't really do much to stop the trade in bat meat and kept it on sale at markets.
In 2015 researchers in Wuhan went further...
    Creation of a chimaera
From the scientific journal Nature, November 2015:
    https://www.nature.com/news/engineered-bat-virus-stirs-debate-over-risky-research-1.18787?WT.mc_id=TWT_NatureNews

"An experiment that created a hybrid version of a bat coronavirus — one related to the virus that causes SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) — has triggered renewed debate over whether engineering lab variants of viruses with possible pandemic potential is worth the risks.
"In an article published in Nature Medicine on 9th November, scientists investigated a virus called SHC014, which is found in horseshoe bats in China. The researchers created a chimaeric virus, made up of a surface protein of SHC014 and the backbone of a SARS virus that had been adapted to grow in mice and to mimic human disease. The chimaera infected human airway cells — proving that the surface protein of SHC014 has the necessary structure to bind to a key receptor on the cells and to infect them. It also caused disease in mice, but did not kill them."
"The findings reinforce suspicions that bat coronaviruses capable of directly infecting humans (rather than first needing to evolve in an intermediate animal host) may be more common than previously thought, the researchers say.
"But other virologists question whether the information gleaned from the experiment justifies the potential risk. Although the extent of any risk is difficult to assess, Simon Wain-Hobson, a virologist at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, points out that the researchers have created a novel virus that “grows remarkably well” in human cells. “If the virus escaped, nobody could predict the trajectory,” he says."
    Some of my thoughts...
    1. The reputable journal Nature has added a disclaimer to the original article, saying there's no proof the current coronavirus is engineered
    2. However I find it an incredible coincidence that the ONLY level 4 microbiology research lab in China handling deadly coronaviruses is in Wuhan, of all places.
    3. Then there's the strange reaction of the Chinese government in December and January, including towards doctors who reported the initial cases of what we now know of COVID-19. Intimidation, cover-ups, you name it.
    4. Maj. Gen. Chen Wei, China's top bioweapons expert and others were dispatched to the Wuhan lab in January (According to - https://nypost.com/2020/02/22/dont-buy-chinas-story-the-coronavirus-may-have-leaked-from-a-lab/)
    5. As early as 2013, the Chinese government researchers knew SHC014 and similar coronaviruses could bind to key receptor ACE2 in human lungs... But the wild animal markets stayed open. Why did China not open up about what they knew and take action on the markets? https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26552008
    6. Many in the scientific community questioned the grave risks of such research at the time but China pressed on. Their government clearly wished to know if SHC014 could bind to ACE2 if it made the leap to humans. I am not suggesting they were searching for biological weapon ingredients... But damn, did they find one. From Nature: "[The study findings] move this virus from a candidate emerging pathogen to a clear and present danger”. Useful to know, but it didn't stop certain people eating the hosts of such pathogens... or potentially trading ex-lab animals on the black market. In fact some Chinese researchers have been previously jailed for doing exactly that.
    7. Going so far as to make this chimera virus, an engineered bat virus tested on mice, strikes me as incredibly dangerous research, open to all sorts of abuse and accidents.
    8. In Wuhan, the "gain-of-function" research on viruses seeks to understand the genetic makeup and specifics of virus-host interaction... In other words, how can we gain the function to effect other hosts like humans, and what can we learn from it? Risky science, or purposefully malign?
Either way, the Chinese government owes the world a massive apology.
The bat meat and wild animal markets selling bats should have stopped at least 5 years ago.
The Wuhan research lab safety standards need to be transparent and any cases of corruption made public.
And an agreement with the rest of the world should be signed by the Chinese military, promising never to conduct research for the production of bioweapons.
Harry Patch, the last surviving British soldier of World War I said before he died - "the next war will be chemical, and they will never learn". Guess he was right.

I agree with many things Trump does and disagree with many others. Anyone who completely agrees or disagrees with anyone, including God, is probably a Communist, not because he doesn't have opinions, but because there is an absolute ban on expressing any opinion, not in complete compliance with the dictats of the top leadership.
This post almost seems like it's right out of Communist China or USSR under Stalin or Lenin or Germany under Hitler.
In any civil world, one can Agree to Agree or Agree to Disagree, and both choices are respected. Lack of choice is the foundation of Communism, whether disguised as hard left, or modern age liberals trolling anyone and everyone on social media and in public, even their own brethren, if opinions aren't expressed by an exact expression of phrases and words, including calling everyone else in disagreement with themselves (including non radical liberals) as fascists and racists and evil and (ironically) intolerant and other names.
If the whole purpose of this post is about politics, maybe politics should be kept out of discussions here. Or dedicate a thread to political discussions (if political discussion can ever be called that).

If the EOSHD site was solely about cameras, and that was it, full stop, then I say a ban on politics is fine.
However, Andrew's site has always been a place that is non-corporate and "unsterile," if you will.  He's not afraid to drop his opinion and that's why I stick around.  If I want bland regurgitated information, there's plenty of on-line options for that.
Crossing the line is something all of us but the most rhetorically disciplined have been close to doing, but erring on the side of staying respectable isn't too hard to do.
And, ultimately, EOSHD is a site that prioritizes gear, but also exists as a refuge for aspiring filmmakers.  Filmmakers should have passion.  Otherwise, what are we?  Just content creators?  That's okay for some I guess, but standing for one's ideals with integrity and rationality should be a filmmaker's or artist's ethos.
One of the most influential people in my life was a high school teacher that was willing to engage us students.  He would talk about the world and encourage us to participate in it as productive citizens. His lectures were fascinating revelations about his value system and why it worked.  Often times we would stray from that semester's syllabus and spend the whole hour just chatting about ideas.  We were a room of equals simply by the way he behaved and respected us, a bunch of dumb high-schoolers that really didn't deserve such treatment... but there he was giving us agency when every one else in the system, it seemed, wanted to make sure we stayed in our place.
Funny thing was, he was an auto-shop teacher.  The other funny thing was that he was a staunch conservative.  An 'all-in' Reaganite; can't even count how many times he went on about Thatcher either, to give you an idea.
I thought his ideas about society we're complete and utter rubbish.  Still do.  But the fact that he didn't beat me down with ad-hominem attacks because I disagreed with him, and encouraged me to debate made him the best teacher I ever had.
I still can't do a valve job properly and fix a timing chain, but he let me realize how important it was to have integrity, a slightly more important lesson.
Meanwhile I had a liberal English teacher so far up her own ass you couldn't say one thing to her sideways without her feeling insulted.  And she was teaching writing for god's sakes!
So there you go.  My anecdotal response.  Whoopie-de-doo.  Bottom line, conservatives ain't all bad, but some are.  Liberals ain't all bad, but some are.  Be kind and try to ignore the true jerks that just don't want to respect you.

The world is in a really dark place at the moment, but I think we need some hope.
Let's assume by July or August, we'll be through the worst of it and have a Canon EOS R5 to play with.
Maybe Fuji will surprise us with an X-H2 by then and Sony with an A7S III.
And hopefully some sport will be back on as well. I was going to film some of it!
So I think we should have one thread for the virus crisis, where we share tips about staying safe, hygienic, etc. and are free to discuss our fears too. Many will lose their income streams and they will need a place to talk and get help.
But I think my role now is to boost the camera side of the forum, get some camera related blogs out and stop my own coronavirus worries taking over from that. It's very hard to turn off the news when you have loved-ones in high risk groups and places. I will now try to do that and get back down to business.
