  1. I don't like FF as much as s35 and s16. So if what you say is true, it would be sad. Having to settle for the FFs crop factor. No tele, heavy ND and so on, no thanks. Btw, I doubt Steve Jobs is located inside his tombstone and there for not turning in it either ;)

It's basically an Alexa look for only $5k. Won't be too hard to sell to producers. We live in crazy times. The amount of color information - the ability for high speed. The weight. Man things are getting nuts. I think the KineRaw has a big challenge since Blackmagic is so established - but we won't know till the camera comes out.

    I hate the fact that I want this camera because it looks pretty. Still, it looks like it'll be a great option beyond pure aesthetics. Can't wait to see what's in store for the GX8!

    Why APSC is dead

    ​Not me and I currently own two FF and two APS-c cameras, and have owned a few m43 as well. The beauty of APS-c is that it really falls in the middle of M43 and FF -- smaller/cheaper lenses than FF, bigger sensor and higher IQ/DR than M43. APS-c isn't going anywhere, look at the Amazon rankings for ILC's, all of the top sellers are APS-c. There's a small advantage with FF in terms on noise/DR - though not much and in many cases there's no advantage at all (Canon FF vs. Sony/Samsung APS-c). DOF is really the only place FF has a clear advantage, but even then its only one stop. And geez, look at the size/price of the new FE 35. FF has its advantages from an IQ standpoint, but lenses are more expensive and much larger. Depends on your needs and budget, but APS-c is the biggest part of the ILC market because it offers the best IQ (talking stills) for the money. A better test from your original post would be to put the FE 35/1.4 on the A6000 and the A7, so you're comparing two 24mp images with the same sensor bloodline. Fuji and Sony are so different because of the X-trans rendering. The A7s is the outlier in the discussion because of its crazy ISO's, but you're limited to 12mp and below 3200 it isn't anything special compared to any current FF and some APS-c sensors when you downsample the images to 12mp. APS-c is the midsize sedan of the ILC market - bland and boring, but sells better than any other segment.

  6. It is almost perfect, especially the global shutter and DR. I will be very interested to see if DJI or others make a nice gimbal for it (the marketing images look very much like a DJI gimbal?) I just wish they had though about post stabalisation. The 2.7k sensor would have been so much better. No matter how good your gimbal, adding a touch of stablisation in post just gives it that floaty, filmic feel. Hopefully the 1080p will be good enough that you could stabilise and resize it back up and still have a detailed image. I would also like to see 48p and maybe a smaller battery. It is pretty damn exciting though. My "bread and butter" work is now calling for 4K, but this camera would really suit a more narrative based work (where I don't think 4K means alot, personally).

  8. Not exactly, but similar. The breakout cable I posted includes an additional (2nd) cable, that provides 3.3v power to power the drive, directly from the CFAST card connection. The fellow who put together the C-Box seems to have only the single SATA data cable coming from the CFAST adapter, and instead, has chosen to power the unit via 5v adapter option. My idea was not unique, only sought to put together a similar unit with an enclosed drive and existing tech, on the cheap.

    Professional Film is going FF and larger while photography is as well or honestly has always been (medium format). You can still create beautiful images though with most camera's, even smaller sensor ones. The advantage from my experience of larger sensor cameras is first and foremost noise performance, wide angle and dof. While Blackmagic with their pocket/micro camera may have smaller sensors it's really the lovely dynamic range and color science that make the image look so "film like". Talking cameras is cool and fun, but honestly everyone needs to focus more on their own work with the tools they have which is more than enough to get to where you want to be and then you can always use better gear.......

HI Jimmy, just wondering what your thoughts on the new Black Magic drone camera are ? https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/blackmagicmicrocinemacamera/expansion peeps are saying stuff like "I think some of the big points for us are: Global Shutter, RC control - including lens functions, Compact package, Interchangeable lenses - not a GoPro or DJI style camera Expansion interface which the controller can interact with, and they will publish the specifications. Speculation on my part is it looks like it could be balanced aerodynamically as well the weight distribution. " and talk about " S.Bus and PWM pins on the expansion port let you set up remote or wired camera controls for total flexibility so you can build a setup that allows you to control everything from exposure to focus and even zoom from a remote location. A stabilized drone camera with a remotely controlled zoom lens on it? " - so I'm just wondering what your thoughts are on this one.. I'm sure the next version will have 2.2k/2.7k/4k for sure cheers Tony. ​

For the german version, there was a slightly different phrase, translated by Kubricks german wife and approved by him: Was du heute kannst besorgen, das verschiebe nicht auf morgen! (This sentence, typed on hundreds of sheets in different layouts, forever. And ever. And ever.) Quite literally (from phrasen.com): Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today! Kids hear that often from their mothers. Do your homework first before you go outside to play, that's typically meant. Alternative suggestion from phrasen.com: Procrastination is the thief of time! If you consider the situation autobiographical (to some extent), Kubrick knew what wasting time felt like on the long run. He didn't shoot a lot of films. And he was a gear nerd too. ​Agreed. Just let me say that I really wasn't aware of being offensive. EDIT: Navel-gazing leads nowhere, it's not only irritating others, it's de-motivational for everyone, including oneself. We shouldn't mud the water, we should stay abstinent for a while and concentrate on actually executing our plans.

    ​True. But lens size will always be linked to body size. I also prefer full frame for photography. That doesn't make aps-c or m43 dead. Of course Sony 'admits' it, they have been focussing heavily on fullframe cameras. Sony is a good example of the lens size 'problem' though. Most of the FE lenses are huge. On the other hand, that is a design choice. Sony could make more small full frame lenses. The 28mm f/2 and 35mm f/2.8 are perfect examples and lenses I'd love to use if I had a A7. I don't like huge beasts like the 35mm f/1.4 or 70-200mm f/4 OSS. I wish Sony would make more f/2 - f/2.8 lenses. 20mm f/2.8, 24mm f/2.8, 35mm f/2 OSS, 50mm f/1.8 OSS (just a cheap one :)) would be nice. They could be small and not crazy expensive. One thing that does disappoint me is cost of lenses for smaller sensors and the inability of Olympus/Panasonic to make really FAST lenses. Take the new Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 for example. It's compact, 534 grams, costs €1299. I'm sure the image quality will be great, but essentially it uses half the glass (and is half the weight) of a full frame equivalent like the Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8 (€1679), but it is not half the cost. Volume is probably a problem here and again - the quality of the M.Zuiko will be outstanding, but so is the Nikkor. I just wish M43 lenses were not only half the size and weight, but also half the cost. Or the same price with an aperture that makes the lens actually an equivalent. In theory a 7-14mm f/1.4 should be possible with the same size as a fullframe 14-28mm f/2.8. So far only Sigma has accomplished something close to this with the 18-35mm f/1.8. Lenses like that show the value of aps-c imo. Would be great if there were more like them.
