I had the chance to interview Elle Schneider today of LA based Digital Bolex. Their D16 camera is a 16mm Bolex using existing off the shelf components and raw processing software developed in Canada. It shoots 12bit raw with no rolling shutter, although the sensor is much smaller and less sensitive than the one in the 5D Mark III.
Now I love this kind of enterprising spirit. A passion for filmmaking, a passion for technology and a “let’s build a rocket” mentality. The Digital Bolex project which seeks to build a digital cinema camera for indie filmmakers has now succeeded in passing their $100,000 target in just 24hrs – helped by taking pre-orders for the camera at $2500 each. In fact it is set to break $200,000 in just…
Japan’s national broadcast corporation NHK has developed a large CMOS 8K sensor for Super Hi Vision. At 21.5mm x 12.1mm it is the size of Super 35mm when cropped to 16:9, and does 120fps at a resolution of 7680 x 4320.
This is big. Samsung has begun mass-production of a new screen technology which is also sensitive to light like a digital camera. It has hybrid pixels which display an image as well as sensing it. It represents the start of a complete merging of display and imaging device. The surface of the 40″ panels contains optical sensors in every pixel. The panel is not just a mix of sensor and…
Canon’s new Cinema EOS camera is here and it is 5D Mark II inspired in terms of design although not price! Costing over $16,000 the Canon EOS C300 has a far more compact and less cluttered design than the Sony FS100 or F3. The camera takes on the look of a DSLR with built in EVF. The camera will be available in January 2012.
Canon have just announced they are opening a Professional Technology Centre in Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard. Needless to say the November announcement now looks almost certain to mark a huge push by Canon into RED’s back yard.
iPhone have chosen Omnivision’s OV8830 sensor for their iPhone 4S and the module has a surprise up its sleeve along with some some quite startling technology we’re not unfortunately seeing on the consumer handset itself. Can’t wait for the jailbreak!
