Above is the new EOS 5Ds, a high megapixel full frame camera from Canon. Specs have been leaked online ahead of the official announcement next week.

Japanese website Digicame-info have leaked specs and a picture of the upcoming Canon 5DS.

With 50MP full frame sensors the EOS 5DS and 5DS R will likely not be able to do 4K without a significant crop factor, or 1080p without significant line skipping.

    • CMOS 50.6MP full frame sensor (by Canon or Sony?)
    • Dual DIGIC 6
    • Magnesium alloy body (weather proof)
    • ISO 100-6400 (regular)
    • Max 5fps continuous shooting
    • New picture styles including “fine detail”
    • Crop modes of 1.3x and 1.6x
    • New “quick control screen”
    • Built in Interval Timer
    • Built in timelapse
    • 64 AF points
    • EOS iTR AF
    • 150,000 pixel RGB + IR photometry sensor

Curiously the leak does not make any mention at all of any video specs!

Doing a full pixel readout on a 50MP sensor is going to be very hard even if the camera is living on the current cutting edge of technology. The much more expensive 50MP+ full frame cameras such as the Pentax 645z for example Philip Bloom has been shooting stills with unfortunately can’t do good video.

However it would be foolish to write off a camera because of some leaked specs and a lack of information about the video side, so let’s wait and see!

Ergonomically the camera looks very similar to the 5D Mark III but with a slight ridge on the front of the body where your hand rises to meet the lens focus or zoom barrel.

For stills this looks like an excellent camera though and it will be interesting to see if Canon have broken the 12 stop dynamic range barrier of their previous sensors. I’m expecting 14-15 stops out of this one.

The official announcement is next week and I will dig out those video specs soon… be sure to check back for updates or follow EOSHD here on Twitter or on Facebook here.
