Updated: Canon 5Ds does not feature 4K video

Canon 5Ds

Canon Rumors suggests the 5Ds records 1080/30p (translated from the Japanese source at DCI). Looks like we will have to place our hope in the 5D Mark IV and a continued reduction in 1D C prices on eBay to get 4K from Canon anywhere near in line with the pricing of competitors.

Here are the detailed specs…

The 5Ds R is the same but without the anti-aliasing filter. (As per the D800E).

The Pentax 645Z has a similar effective megapixel count to the 5Ds, at 51MP.

In case you’re wondering what the actual resolution is, the Pentax clocks in at 8256 x 6192.

That compares to the 24MP Sony A7 at 6000×4000 and the 36MP A7R at 7360 x 4912.

Although the difference between 50MP and 36MP seems enormous on paper, the internet excitement over this camera doesn’t seem to justify the reality.

8256 versus 7360?

That’s what it comes down to.

It’s an 8K sensor but what I really need is a 5Dv with 4K. V stands for video!

The 5Ds is so far the ultimate pixel peeping camera.
