Not sure about that one, I've never not used my tripod on a shoot. The movie business is booming in Detroit. I'd say camera equipment is a short term investment anyways, you make a bunch of money with it and the equipment itself loses value. Aside from maybe cinema lenses.

I don't know man, tripod is honestly the way to go for most things. Most people don't have the budget to do good moving shots outside of really basic stuff. Everyone wants to be Euphoria without having any of the resources to pull it off.

The Raven is a good deal these days. Seeing kits with everything for under $4k. You still gotta stock up on redmags though, probably another $1k.

In the few tests I have done the C70 matches pretty well to Alexa.

I pre-ordered my camera back in January has no information on when this will be shipped. But Amazon pushed the estimated delivery from February to November!
But I'm glad that it's available to order here: https://camix.co.uk/product/sony-fx6-cinema-camera/

Magic Lantern isn't undependable. 1080p 14 bit RAW is a staple. It's just an annoying workflow.

Yup it's some kind of filing system you download so then you right click your mlv folder, scroll down and choose MLVFS, assign them to a different folder and open them in Resolve. Then somehow or another it tricks Resolve into thinking they're CDNG files.

Exactly, but the workflow isn't really annoying either anymore. With MLVFS, the MLV files can be brought into Resolve as if they're CDNGS... then you can color and edit them like any other files.

You don't need tripods unless shooting on long lenses. Most wedding photographers are still using DSLR's with no IBIS and no tripods.

OP didn't say he was shooting birds on 300mm lenses. I don't think he is gonna be shooting his child 3 blocks down the street.

Fuji is my go to choice for family stuff. Small and nice looking images/video. Not great for narrative as there is no 12 bit option but for family stuff it's great.

TomTheDP got a reaction from PPNS in Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
    @PPNS

Making a film is really difficult and your frames are looking great. I am sure you didn't have a big crew possibly none at all and you probably weren't being paid much if anything. Don't be hard on yourself. Skill isn't the only factor in a film looking good trust me on that one.

I've been looking at the S1R because of how cheap they are. I've been thinking at getting into photography, but would also use it for video too. Gonna need to watch some videos to see if it would be okay for video use.

TomTheDP got a reaction from SRV1981 in SLog vs Clog c
CLOG 3 has more contrast. There is also a cutoff in the shadows making it appear cleaner but also giving you less information in the shadows. There is also probably a bit less highlight retention. It's good if you want to just add a bit of contrast and saturation and call it a day. CLOG2 is a more conventional log where the full dynamic range of the sensor is maintained.

I am Co-Producer of two feature films I am trying to place them on the film festivals circuit in Europe right now.
One of them (shot on Pochet 6K) was selected (for official competition) this week.
I won't write here what cameras were used for the other one... but one thing I can assure you: there have been feature films shot on ARRI and RED cameras beaten by our precious Pocket series footage FYI :- )

The nice thing about RED is that tint and WB can be adjusted in post if you shoot RAW. I feel the Komodo is really close but I guess not quite the same. I'd be down to share some of the files if you are interested.

Surprisingly it's not that uncommon to find an Alexa with a Pocket camera as the B cam. Not on super high end productions but on mid tier stuff. I am trying to see what matches best as a "cheaper" B cam. I was pretty happy with the Sigma FP but I need to post a comparison to see what others think as my eye isn't the best for color subtlety.

TomTheDP reacted to PannySVHS in $60 Pentax that's actually a $800 Zeiss with optics by designer of Stanley Kubrick's NASA glass
@TomTheDP gives me an idea. We all could do a 28mm at F2.8 challenge. Btw, I will reread this tasty thread now, with some scrambled eggs with grilled tomatoes on German Brötchen and a big fat coffee with milk.
Glimpsing at our friend @andy lee mentioning the beautiful and cheap Canon FD 28mm 2.8 gives me chills. One of my all time favorite and for sure dearest lenses. Filming with it wide open in S35 format is a thrill to me. It has almost as much resolution as the Panny 20mm pancake and can still be bought for 20 to 30EUR if lucky.
So for a great image it does not take a Pentax Hollywood, but many other 28mm lenses can do a great job. The tiny Canon FD delivered most spectacular images to me. So how about that 28mm F2.8 challenge?
By the way, I couldnt resist and grabbed a Hollywood for 450EUR with postage and fee. A lot of money for me but I am so happy, after seven or so years of drooling. Not only that, but I got the Pentax M F2 as well a couple months ago.
Still, the challenge 28 at 2.8. Let´s do it, cool cats! 🙂

Thanks, if you check the comment section I pinned my own post where I show which camera is which. The give away is usually dynamic range, that or the Alexa is warmer looking.

I unfortunately have never worked with the Varicam but I have definitely considered it.
