PaulUsher got a reaction from ntblowz in Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K
Wanted to see what a 2K delivery looked like. Just dropped on my custom lut for the R. I'm seeing a lot of information, beautiful rolloff

I enjoy his channel but if ever there was a wrong camera for him it is this one as it would have overheated by the time he got to his second point.

Looks stunning to me as well. Interesting how it seems people on the internet these days get more frustrated when people saying something positive, rather than getting frustrated at people for saying something negative. Here, let me chime in - I don't give a shit what the weather is like. I don't give a shit what every other camera does. This particular footage looks "stunning" to me as well. The colors look fantastic, with great skin tones. It's not overly sharp like certain other cameras with a nice smooth/cinematic feel to the footage and it has great motion cadence. To my eyes, who has shot and watched thousands of clips from various manufacturer - it seems to hit above its weight class on just what I'm seeing in this video and the clips that I have downloaded. Super easy to grade and it looks very similar to my C200 files. I can appreciate the S1H AND Canon R5 or any other camera.

I am relieved to see this...
No NOBS sponsor Tony's videos, unlike the NOBS at Canon who sponsor Peter's.

Stand corrected. I agree it looks great.

Yeah agreed this style needs to evolve. The problem with these guys (not just the tech tubers but the lifestyle YouTubers etc too) is that they too readily become salespeople. Audiences tire of that. That they don’t use their influence / activate their audience to fund and produce their own films is telling. It seems they’d rather be YouTubers than filmmakers...

PaulUsher reacted to Video Hummus in Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K
Will be interesting to see if he sticks with using the R5 for vlogging. Sounds like the overheating issue will pop up every time he vlogs with it. The DR in video hasn’t caught up with Sony either.
Still a huge void left for someone like Panasonic to take advantage of with either a GH or S camera. They just need good AF, and that’s all they need really.
Its pretty clear messaging from Canon. They view these as kinda hybrid cameras but mostly photo cameras. If you want Canon for video is currently C200/300/500.
Honestly the R is still the better YouTuber vlog camera. R6 falls short with all the gotchas.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see a video from any of the Canon YouTube personalities that they are sticking with the R.

And what Canon EOS R6? Is there any overheating issue too? Today I watched one Youtube video and R6 has overheating issue too. 😞

I think you'll find others here shoot as a fulltime job too. 😉
Canon hasn't given people want they want. I don't recall people asking for 8K RAW. In fact, 4K RAW is arguably needed far more than 8K RAW. I don't recall peole asking for clip limits, overheating issues. In fact, Canon users have always spoken against Sony cameras for overheating, praising Canon for not chasing gimmicks whilst taking their time and releasing a reliable camera to use. Very few asked to lose that for the sake of 8K.
I'm not denying this is an innovative camera that is pushing what technology can do. I've no doubt it will be a great tool for photographers who are also shooting the odd video and videographers who are primarily shooting short clips. Most cameras has issues of some sort or another. I use the Pocket 4K a lot. No flip screen, no IBIS, no AF to speak of and no weather sealant. Its not a perfect camera. Neither is the R5.

PaulUsher reacted to Chrille in My thoughts on the Canon EOS R5 8K monstrosity - 1TB footage per 50 minutes
I guess in ten years some 18 year old will shoot something great with 8K on the old used Canon R5 that he bought for cheap. 🙂

PaulUsher reacted to ajay in Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K
For what it's worth, one early-on reviewer of the R5 responded to my question about the camera overheating and stated that during the time they were able to test the camera they had no heating issues. No warnings. No problems. The reviewer also stated that they will be testing this issue with a production camera as soon as they can get one and will do a complete and honest review once in-hand.
Could it be an issue with preproduction cameras only?
Could it be that it's only an issue in extreme heat?
Hard to know for sure but I think we do owe it to Canon to not prejudge the camera beforehand. Seems like a reasonable approach to this issue.

PaulUsher reacted to josdr in Canon EOS R6 shoots 10bit 4K/60 (but NO RAW) - How it compares to the EOS R5
My "previous gen" X-T3 shoots 400mbit h265 all-i 10 bit in 23.98 so I am quite surprised in what Canon did here. This is heavy handed to say the least . the r6 does not make sense for cinematography as it stands. They could have easily given it the 23.98 All i treatment . You are of course right in saying that " true 24p and ALL-I being more desirable for filmmakers especially as ALL-I has fewer motion artefacts"..
I would have loved the Canon AF but this makes it a no go...

PaulUsher got a reaction from Emanuel in Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K
Yeah this whole thing is a marketing ploy. Anyone who has worked in marketing will recognise this is simply a classic loss leader -type strategy, where the R5 draws consumers into Canon and interests them in the ‘cutting edge’ RF line.
In sales, there’s this thing called the alternative close - where you give the customer a choice of two (instead of ‘buy or not buy‘ it’s ‘buy this or buy that’). You always pitch the product you WANT to sell after you’ve presented the loss leader. It’s a very effective strategy and it’s working wonders for Canon: ‘Yeah that R5 looks neat but it’s expensive and I don’t need 8K, so I’ll get the R6 instead...’

PaulUsher reacted to Eugenia in FAKE ANAMORPHIC - CANON EOS M2
I received the modded Helios 44-2 today, from a Ukraine seller who mods them for both anamorphic, declicked aperture, and cine gears. Looks less swirly than my other Helios, but I think it also looks more convincingly anamorphic. Massive flare at f/2.0 (wide open), but thankfully lots of it goes away if using a filter (any filter) in front of the lens. I loved the results.

PaulUsher reacted to Andrew Reid in Canon 9th July "Reimagine" event for EOS R5 and R6 unveiling
GFX100 is medium format! 100 megapixel. 28ms in 4K is a small miracle. Also, doesn't look like 28ms to my eye so not even sure if that's correct.
S1H 4K 24ms is also very good, given it isn't pixel binning or line skipping from the 6K.
Sony A9 has fastest sensor in the business.
Canon seem to give us great rolling shutter performance in 4K/60p but cripple it in 24p to protect the Cinema EOS line.
It's same old, same old!
Yes £4k new standard pro price for mirrorless cameras.
It's far cry from the GH2 days isn't it!
Companies have finally realised how much money pros have!
Or did have until coronavirus.
I think we'll be seeing some discounting quite soon after the initial hype and pre-orders have died down.
The R6 is more interesting for most people. I may just review that and leave the R5 till later.

PaulUsher reacted to currensheldon in 1D X III vs EOS R5 and R6
Definitely appears the R6 will be second in command to the R5 - a powerful camera but just without 8k and high megapixel count. It may ultimately be better for video shooters with lower megapixel, probably better noise performance, probably downsampling from 6k sensor to 4k, IBIS, 4k 60fps, 10-bit. Basically a 1DX III but without the 5.9k raw (which is fine to lose, really, for 90% of shoots). Might be a much better B-Cam to C300/C500/C200 than the R5 will be.
I just hope they get their gunshot-loud shutter under control. Give me a Panasonic or Fuji sounding and feeling shutter, pleeeeaaaase.

Yep both Nvidia and Intel QuickSync currently they don’t support h265 4:2:2.... Nvidia 20xx platform can do 4:2:0 and 4:4:4 but not yet 4:2:2
Hopefully with more camera using it they will improve.
I’m sure even software only the NLE could optimize more.
On windows / resolve a i7-9900k can do it software only.

PaulUsher reacted to Dave Maze in Deity D4 DUO - Best Run and Gun On-Camera Mic?
I actually helped develop this mic over a year ago when I had a meeting with Andrew from Deity. I was sharing how I really hated how muffled audio sounded when talking behind camera for vlogs. I wanted a solution and they delivered. Not only does the mic have two mics on it... but you get an input that allows for a lav or other audio source to feed into your camera or recorder. The Rode Wireless GO is perfect for it and can clip right onto the Rycote mount.
Just wanted to share these vids with you guys. Jeven and I are the only people who have posted hands on reviews so far... IDK if we are the only ones who got them or what... but this $89 mic is well worth the $$ in my opinion.

I've tested on my iMac Pro, CRM files from 1Dx Mark III, and they struggle and fans of the iMac come to kick in. It's still not optimized well.

Worst thing you could do is bog down your production with footage your computers can’t handle. That causes a ripple effect along the whole production line. If your clients are happy with what you are shooting now, they will be happy with it for 6-12 months until you can have an editing rig that can handle H265 and the RAW that will be coming out of the R5.

PaulUsher reacted to Video Hummus in 1D X III vs EOS R5 and R6
I don’t think it’s a software problem. It’s a hardware one. H.265 or AV1 won’t become mainstream or useable unless there is some serious hardware encoding and decoding acceleration AND for all the major profiles.
FCPX has been overhauled under the hood on using Metal 2. I think we are going to see a major push by Apple for performance improvements and integration with their accelerator cards and maybe future acceleration chips in MacBook Pros (think next gen T3 chip).
It also appears camera companies have chosen HEVC as their next codec of choice future generation cameras...especially since its in Canons new cameras.

Yikes. Just when it feels like the battle is won, there’s another one... We may finally get super cameras (look at the three on that list!) yet we’ll still need external recorders / transcoding? Even H.265 seems too much for NLEs right now. Let’s hope the software catches up fast!

PaulUsher reacted to Lajos Nagy in Sony A7S III wish list and the not-NAB 2020 no-show today
Just to add a more easily digestible, more immediately obvious way to show what's happening, here's the chart shot from the video in high-res.
Top to bottom: 1080p full sensor width, Video crop mode 1080p, then 4k on the bottom. 4k is scaled down to 1080p and exported to DNxHR HQX before being put next to the other footage to make it fair. The comparison is then rendered to a 4k timeline to remove the bottleneck there. Staggering how much of a difference there is between 1080p FF and 1080p crop. The jump from 1080p crop to 4k is nominal, comparatively.
