To be brand agnostic can be the right medicine... : ) Just sayin' ; ) Let's focus on topics and not throwing stones to whoever has a different opinion from ours, please? :- )
We won't nor need changing the planet or opinions of the rest of the world.

No need. You have a point. Just ignore when people want a monochromatic world. No matter what, your point stands.

It is even worse as I don't have a R5 and I'm not even defending it for the overheat in video as is a big question mark for any video usage. I also praised the A7S although it has also issues including possible overheating.
But this guy joined 3 weeks ago and did 90 useless posts and attacking people and is not banned..... maybe is time for me to move somewhere else...

    5.1K mode apparently is safe.
Insulting R5 adopters with fanboyism is no sense. At a certain point this dead horse as well flogging the issue, any attempt of finding a workaround, becomes a disservice.

Nice to know, I hate to swap formats and throw away my lenses collection. Really.
Counting with the same performance as with native Canon R mount glass means I can only focus on the price for body + accessories.
Lenses should not be included in the same pack. They are the pyramid's platform. Looks like most part of posters here tend to forget it.

Once overheating will be under control or more news how to handle a workaround will pop up around, I see this camera as the best current offer to fit my needs and liking.
Seems pretty clear to me that this 5.1K option route will put this device in some upper degree, in point of fact.
Isn't it in behalf of this we are using a camera forum to exchange ideas and information we can adapt for our shooter's life? ; )

If “multiple solutions” or “a full statement and plan in the coming weeks” will kill the fair overheating concerns, who won't try to have one?
I predict this camera can be as much revolutionary as 5DII was a decade ago. We also had to wait until no more workarounds were necessary along that late 2008 and early 2009, even though, much easier from a mere firmware update then, it finally happened:

Thanks, was looking for this. I'm interested again!

What would happen if you put that speed booster on the R5? Is the crop similar to the Eos R?

For anyone interested, someone finally pointed me to a video showing the 1.6x crop mode footage.  To me it looks very sharp and detailed.   It is at around the 2:14 minute mark.  If  you look at the regular 4k mode before it there is a big difference in the pixelation of the street lights.    Canon's heat sheet claims this mode does not overheat.  So unlike the R you get IBIS and 10 bit internal, and maybe a little bit better autofocus in this mode.   Not ideal for the price, but at least there is a decent 4k mode for longer record times.

Man oh man, all those other TY channels that made multiple videos hyping this thing and making fun of people concerned about overheating (they are tying to be smart about how to spend their hard earned money) only to finally release a video telling us the major deal breakers with this camera and its marketing...those channels are anti-consumer and you should steer well clear of their bullshit.

You can always add an EF to RF mount speedbooster adapter and work FF from there avoiding overheating issue @ 5.1K resolution.
This information has already been advised before in this post and successive ones a dozen pages back along this same thread:

It is. Pro cameramen don't go to a gig without a couple of cam units at least anyways.

So we can get the worst AF in the industry? Thanks but no thanks.
Canon should just put a passive cooling system à la A7S which is much easier for them to do than for Panasonic to have a great AF.
Unfortunately for some weird reasons Canon decided not to cool the R5. Pretty sure someone at top management said « well at least that recording limitation will differentiate with our Cinema line. »

I can't remember what reviewer mentioned that they were amazed that after the camera cooled down to the point that the body didn't feel hot any more that their record times were still severely hampered. It does make you wonder if Canon's firmware is designed to purposely cripple this camera. I usually don't buy into conspiracy theories but one does have to wonder with Canon's history of intentionally crippling cameras.

This is what is upsetting. Not the overheating but the recover timer. It’s unusable.

The rolling shutter is super impressive too, blows me away how much better it is compared to Sony's high MP sensors when for years people said Canon would always be behind and Sony would always have the class leading sensors. Someone posted some E-shutter shots of a hummingbird and the wings look really good. Its a great achievement by Canon.

Seems crippled by the firmware in order to protect their high-end, so let's be optimistic they will stop to be jerks and give us what the technology is able for to begin with. This cat-mouse game does NOT dignify the brand.
As good customer of theirs (aside cameras, we are currently using a C500 in a feature film + three short films to be shot in Santander, Spain and I still have 2x units of a large format printer as workhorses, let alone another half-dozen of Canon units around), I expect a change.

I had the R6 in my shopping cart....but Peter McKinnon's review where he hinted that their were overheating problems then quickly glossed over them made me pause just long enough to find out just how bad it really is, I planned on replacing my GH5 with the R6 and if that went well eventually replacing my 5D with the R5. I would then be all in on Canon C200, R5, and R6....instead now I'm wondering what the GH6 will look like and will hang on to my 5DIV for a few more years.

There are workarounds at the hardware level, they can implement though ;- )

About the time to wait for having the camera back to full capabilities back shorter than 6+ hour long?
This can be fixed by firmware.

My beloved Canon 5dmk 3 was stolen in January, and I held on to the insurance money to see what new cameras would come out by the time I started getting regular gigs again (winter in Canada is always slow, and then we had a pandemic).  I use a Sony a7iii as my main workhorse, with all Nikon lenses adapted to ef (and then ef-e for Sony) but the Canon was a wonderful B-Cam, or A-Cam when I had the time to use Magic Lantern.
Everything Canon has made since the 5d3 has been a huge step backwards (first losing ML in the 5d4 and then the ridiculous 4k crop in that and the R).  Now it looks like the R5 is too risky to be used professionally, so I won't be buying it either, and that saddens me as the specs looked beautiful and I know that with a heatsink it could have really performed better than any other camera.  But I just can't risk it overheating, especially with those ghastly recovery times.

Sony's new camera will still have the severe flaw that has plagued them for ten years now: unchangeable file names.  In a multi-cam situation it is incredibly easy to make major mistakes, and that problem is compounded when you add proxies to your workflow.  Also, B&H says they won't begin shipping the a7siii until late September, so we're looking at waiting until at least October for that camera anyways.

The Panasonic S1H is great (a friend of mine uses it) but would be a huge investment not only in body costs, but also for lenses (L-Mount adapters cost way too much).

So given all of that, I recently rented the Nikon z6, and found it to be pretty equal to the Sony a7iii for video, minus a couple cool but unnecessary features (digital zoom, in-body proxies), and absolutely fabulous for photography (see photos below).  It's a solid professional, dependable camera that's about half the price of the Panasonic S1H, so I'm going to buy it tomorrow.  Using Andrew Reid's Z-Log on the Nikon and his Pro Log on the Sony matched perfectly for video.  Maybe in 5 years I'll give Canon's next camera a chance, but no professional can work with a camera that can brick at any moment, and then stay cooked for the rest of the day.

Not buying now. Was going to before this. We are on a camera forum. Certainly there is many things to be upset about in the world today. Doesn’t mean I have to ruin other aspects because of it.
