The other advantage Sony has with E-mount is they can coordinate the entire E-mount roadmap and strategy, under one roof.
With L-mount, Panasonic, Sigma and Leica cannot collaborate fully over strategy due to antitrust laws.
So if they both end up releasing a similar set of lenses or similar cameras that cannibalise each other, there's not much they can do about it.
In my opinion Sigma would be wise to invest in more than one mirrorless mount.
The SA2 mount I suggested to Kazuto in the interview could do really well, with adapters from SA2 to E-mount, L-mount, RF-mount, etc.
It gives this range of lenses a unique selling point (buy one lens for multiple systems), to differentiate it from Panasonic L-mount lenses.
Sigma were going to develop their own mirrorless mount anyway before the agreement was signed to use L-mount.
Also Panasonic need to push like crazy on the camera side. GH6 should be L-mount and APS-C sensor. New cinema cameras with L-mount to compete with Sony FS cinema line. They really need to up the investment.

I am getting goosebumps only by thinking this. It’s the only established company right now that prioritizes usability and reliability on low cost hybrids. I am going to buy the S5 and ignore the R6 and whatever Sony will announce this month.

If Panasonic would only give some freebies for the S1 users, 10bit VLOG please, 4k60 10bit please. Thank you. 25p in 6K photomode. Thank you super much, Panny! A rigged GH5 is still an indiecinema beast. But that image quality from the Lumix S series is just another league. But is that so? I filmed some very spiffy stuff this weekend and I am amazed again about the material shot with the GH5 if applying some digital diffusion in post. Great looking image. But, S series is indeed in another league. Now, that update for the S1 would make me keep mine and buy a S5 later.  🙂

Ding ding.  Upscale your vids for online platform viewing.  Take advantage of whatever IQ edge you can squeak out of their systems.

I don't think its that big a claim to day that Youtube is rubbish and that quality isn't all that great uploading 4K over 1080p.  Aside from small videos, most of what I deliver is 1080p.
But to say I'm making my life hard shooting 4K - nah.  I'm loving it.  I shoot nearly always 4K BRAW and the pleasure editing these files compared to H264 and even worse, those AVCHD files that for some reason struggled to playback in Premiere even though 4K H264 were okay.
It use to be that after I graded the footage, I had to render to see any benefits and that was just a simple grade.  Now I perform complex grades in Resolve that playback fine on BRAW, whilst stuttering with H264.
Probably about 95% of my work I am doing things where 4K is an advantage.  And should the Industry move closer to 8K, 4K will upscale better than 1080p.
I doubt I will ever go back to shooting 1080p for any project.  Most modern cameras now don't give much thought to 1080p anyway.  I wonder how long it'll be before it is missing altogether from new cameras.

I agree about the financial pain of moving to L mount. If I were to do it I think I'd stick to my EF lenses and just manual focus them like I've always been doing. The image is nicer than the GH5. But would any of my clients notice? Probably not!

    Not the reason at all.
Both Nikon and Sony do heavy processing on their footage. Strong NR creating all kinds of artifacts and strong sharpening with halos around corners.

If you want a proper Sony camera which doesn't look like video, the FX9 and above are your only choices. While Panasonic starting with the S5/S1 and above looks really organic.

Guys.. it is amazing how much the NX1 still holds in 2020 (not considering ISO limitations).
I continually compare the footage of the NX1 with that of the other cameras I use and still continue to prefer what the damn NX1 sensor produces.

The panasonis S1 has the exact same video image, the same full Vlog in the exact same 4k 10 bit 422 codec.
The s1 has better Ibis, better battery life, better weather sealing, full size hdmi, better evf and unlimited recording in 4k 10bit 422.
You can buy it used (like new condition) for $1600 US pretty often. These usually include vlog.
It's a little bit bigger than the s5, but for a solid filmmaking machine, a used s1 is probably the better option for an affordable cinema camera.
There are firmware updates confirmed for the future too. So the s1's value as a filmmaking tool will increase.
The s5 is an incredible camera though, it's insane we're at a point where cameras this good are releasing at these prices

At $2000 I would much rather buy a used S1 with it's better battery, EVF, and handling. The only thing it lacks is the 10-bit 60p.

Edit: And unlimited record time and a full size HDMI instead of micro.

You have had the camera for a year. That's a fairly long time when it comes to tech but, your camera is just as good as when you bought it. It's still a great camera. You have either made your money back on that S1 over the last year and if you haven't......then the S1 is still better than what you really need and will still serve you well. I know a few ACS (Australia) accredited DP's who still shoot on FS7's despite better cameras coming along since it's release many years ago.
Oh, and full articulation screen is only an advantage if you are a Vlogger. Personally, I hate fully articulating screens. If you ARE a Vlogger, don't stress, the S1 is still more than up to the job.
Established DP's don't just run out and always buy the latest and greatest and neither should you. Nor should you feel like you've been conned.
I really don't understand why many are always chasing the latest and greatest when what they have still does the job perfectly. The S1 is still great!
People making a living from cameras are NOT upgrading or changing systems every year!
    Invest in lenses!

I'm just saying that the S5 really isn't that much better. Everyone is talking like its this huge upgrade that somehow makes the s1 obsolete.
While the S1 with VLOG goes for around $1600 like new.
The s5 might be $2000 and if so, technically what are you losing for $400 less? 4k 60 10bit? a couple different aspect ratios? maybe marginally better AF?
But what does the S1 have over the S5? Better build, better EVF, Better battery life, full HDMI out.
I guess it's a no brainer if you prefer smaller cameras, in that case the S5 is 100% a better choice. But what if you like big cameras?
Honestly the S1 and s5 seem like comparable cameras made for different shooting styles.
Most retailers include the VLOG upgrade for free now anyway.
I'm not in the market to buy another S1 because I already have one, I might potentially replace my a6300 with the S5 as my gimbal cam if the price is good.
I'm only saying this because I noticed a lot of people saying the S1 in kind of pointless now, but really I don't think it is. Now if the S5 is like $1600 then yeah I think the S1 will sorta be pointless.

IMO hybrid cameras like the s1 and s1h have reached cinema level image quality, even with the internal codec.
Motion cadence is probably the biggest struggle for non cine cameras but panasonic has motion really well handled.

Would still be great if Fuji put a full frame crop mode in there for 4K as well.

I am trying to work out if the GH6 is a thing or not.  Owning a vast amount of MFT lenses makes it a better buy than starting from scratch with the S5 or another fullframe.  Though I have enough MFT cameras and welcome at least one fullframe to balance my gear out.
I wonder what Panasonic would bring to the table with the GH6 to keep it relevant given what we are now seeing in fullframe cameras.  I hope more than just 8K.  Internal ND filters, internal RAW maybe.
So far Panasonic are putting more effort into their fullframe and I question if the writing is on the wall for their GH line.  Maybe I am wrong.  But with Olympus pulling out, MFT feels like an endangers species relegated to cheaper camera releases.

My sony a6300 is my gimbal cam, The S1 is my main cam. (My personal cameras) I've used and worked with many different cine cameras as well. Pretty much any camera with a half decent codec/bit depth can be made to match anything in post.
Things like color science are less important than they used to be. Although most modern cameras have astounding color regardless.
Hybrid cams are not replacements for CINEMA cameras, because cinema cameras have lots of features and a specific form factor needed for large productions that the mirrorless cameras just lack.
But when it comes to the final image you obtain from these cameras the gap is pretty much as close as it can get.
Also external recorders are great on cameras like the s1, enabling prores and cine camera equivalent codecs to go along with its cine quality color and dynamic range.
I honestly know "real" cinema cameras are better, I've used them and wished i could own them myself, but if we're being honest, the images in these mirrorless cameras are just as good, or at least as good as it needs to be. So for the prices cameras go for now, we are very spoiled IMO
Also the hacked GH2 is such a cool camera! Ive been tempted to buy a few just because its image has this pleasing classic 16mm film like character when pushing for it.

    Love your footage! 😄
This is my dream sensor size, I just got an s1 earlier this month and through many tests have concluded that its absolutely stunning!
I was debating grabbing the medium format focal reducer for the s1 and just shooting in 16:9 to achieve that look. But honestly, I think the s1's full frame image has enough of the characteristics I like in larger sensors to tickle my fancy for now.
Maybe in a few years when medium format cameras are more accessible I'll take the plunge. But as a rental for a project, this camera is looking very tempting.
I say the bigger the sensor the better, so seeing cameras like this come out is kind of a dream come true. 😄
its also really cool to know some full frame lenses work!

The s1's internal codec is 100% good enough for a theatrical feature.
But if you plan to RIP into the footage with extreme grades then yes, the All I codec is better.
Just like raw isnt nessesary but it's nice to have.
For a low budget indie film with a small crew, the Panasonic mirrorless cameras are a great tool for achieving a cinematic image with their dynamic range, color and ergonomics. Especially now with the S line and the varicam look these cameras produce. Plus they're 10bit 422 which opens the doors for post.
I dont think the s1h is lacking that magic. Looking up films shot on it, I feel its image is right up there with the cine cameras of today.
Once you get a great sensor on your hands an equally as good lens is a must to truly experience the potential
