In this regard, the best thng that could happen to m43 is DJI entering the market full stop. That Lidar AF is amazing.

    But it will not happen.

I use a GH5 and it's enough camera for my skills and modest ambitions. But for the sake of MFT survival, if the GH6 is evolutionary and not revolutionary then they might as well call it a GH5 III -- just how well did the GH5 II sell anyway?

Not so sure about that Kye…
I just need AF tracking to work for anything where someone is walking towards me.
On a wedding day, the total time this happens for us about 2 minutes out of 9-15 hours coverage.
Those 2 minutes are critical stuff though; entrance of the bride/bridal party, exit of the couple, confetti aisles, sparkler aisles and maybe some exclusive couple stuff.
This is where DFD is totally unreliable.
Sometimes it will work near faultlessly.
    Other times not at all.
    Mostly it’s somewhere between.
I have come close so many times to just biting the bullet and trading it all for something more reliable just because of this specific issue.
Ultimately though, I have decided against and instead found a workaround as the rest of the package is too good to junk.
The workaround is on camera, hotshoe mounted action cam as backup.
OK the footage won’t be the same quality and some (hopefully most!) of the time, I will be able to extract a 3 second in focus clip from the 5-10 sequences per wedding where I need to use AF tracking.
But if not, I’ll just have to cut in some action cam footage creatively so it doesn’t look out of place. After all, I have been cutting in the same size sensor drone footage for 3 years so why not?
The rest of the time, DFD is pretty decent/no issues.
However, I am going back to manual focus for anything that isn’t the 2 minutes of every job that needs AF tracking in order to eliminate 100% any potential for even slightly OOF shots.
I’m also ditching IBIS for 90% of the day and going back to freestanding monopod as that eliminates that weird sideways jump glitch that IBIS sometimes throws up!
It will almost be like working like a proper pro… Even a Canon R5c would make sense to me now 😬

Well to me the biggest thing about DR that most people don't realize is that you Have to stay at the sensor's base ISO or you are just wasting your time at any other ISO.
Now some of the newer cameras have dual ISO and that does really help on that front.

Sony use to own stock in Olympus but sold it back I believe several years ago. Will be interesting to see if OM System will fizzle or if they will be acquired. You would think Panasonic would be interested but their camera division is probably not high on the totem pole to the rest of the company interests since the market has constricted.
I'm still very interested in the latest OM-1 camera. I have a feeling it was already a blueprinted product at Olympus and very little changes were made since the spin off company from Olympus.

I have a bit of a conspiracy theory about the new OM digital company.
I think Sony will help it along, and maybe Sony has some interest in taking a stake in a competitor who was formerly more close to Panasonic.
Rumours of a Sony Quad Pixel sensor in the new OM digital camera, could make it surprisingly advanced tech.
As for video... Olympus had a few fans but the masses always saw them more as a photography brand like Fuji, and unlike Fuji, Olympus did not do a big video push later on or any dedicated hybrid models like the Fuji X-H1.
Plus if you had a bunch of Micro Four Thirds lenses and wanted video... You wouldn't choose an E-M1 II over a GH5.
Personally I liked both. Olympus did do some things in a different way, and it's up to opinion whether that was better than Panasonic.
Plus, E-M1 II had phase-detect AF.
E-M1 X is a nice body, they went out on a high.
Of course it lacks all the myriad video features of Panasonic and 10bit.
But it has a seriously nice image and great ergonomics, plus superb IBIS.

The restriction is only mentioned in the manual as a footnote on page 39 ('Selecting the AF target mode'): "The single target mode is automatically applied in movie shooting if the group target mode is set" - it took me a while to work it out too.
I know what you mean... I like the 'Super Control Panel' (probably better than the Pana 'Quick Menu' equivalent), but the Oly main menu system badly needs needs a total re-design.

Albeit I've departed from m4/3 to Fuji, I love the m4/3 system, because of the small lenses - for an amateur like me, m4/3 have more than enough quality for both stills and video (switched only because of the incertain future, both Olympus and Panasonic were never officially sold here, and I use mid-range bodies and looks like the format will become specialized in high end video / wildlife / telephoto).
The body of the OM-1 already leaked, is a child of the E-M1 MKIII and the E-M1X after a party full of booze. 🙂 No big changes from the other Oly bodies (good to see a dedicated AF-ON button, though).
More of my concern were the high and strange bitrate numbers - looks like they are using the same codes, which were the problem of the Oly cameras. They never get to the said bitrate, are kind of soft (compared to Panasonic - which for some could be an advantage) and lacked in chroma department. Let's see how they perform in the new camera.
There were interface problems too. Never had advanced video tools, like waveforms. I bet that they will keep one of the things that I hated most with Olympus - fixed screens layouts, like if you want a histogram you have to sacrifice something else.
But their colors are good. When I had the E-M5 MK II, it's video quality was very bad compared to my GX85 - until a firmware with a video upgrade came (I guess that was v2. 0). Still never bothered too much, when shooting the Olympus was for stills and the GX85 for video. Just for the sake of testing, one day made a short clip in a Jose Gonzalez concert - oh boy, until this day just wish that I've recorded the full song. Still was a little bit soft than the GX85, but it was MUCH more organic - was probably the best image that I've got from that venue.

AF, yes, looks the one that everyone wants in the GH6. @Dave Mazealready shown how good it is, and you can search for a guy named Nigel Barros that uses cheap gear and now is using a E-M1 MKII. From what I saw, is not Sony / Canon level, but looks like better than my Fujis. And the hated Jordan and Chris used an Olympus in the recent video review of the newer Leica, you could looks and takes some conclusions.
I don't think that the OM-1 will be a contender for the GH6 for video, but for hybrid work, and with (probably) better AF and stabilization, could be an interesting option (and for stills will probably be better than the GH6).

Yes, the inconsistences on the E-M1 MK II get annoying - a few of mine:
DCI not being available in 25p or 30p No AF-lock capability (other than an 'AF-off' function that can only be programmed to the lens function button, not to any of the camera buttons - so is unavailable with most lenses). A central single point focus area that's larger in video mode than in stills mode (undocumented, and very awkward for wildlife video e.g. filming birds through surrounding foliage). No 9 and 25 point area AF for video (just central single and all points) - you can use LCD screen 'touch AF' to get a small/medium area, but you have to remember to do that before hitting record and it's not persistent. (The Mk III does have 9 and 25 point area AF for video). The DCI 4k/24p/LOG/Flat situation feels like product marketing wanted some 'Cinema' feature tick boxes added, but never considered that some of those features are just as useful and appealing to video users who use other frame rates...

Just to add a historical footnote...
The E-M1 MK II actually DIDN'T have PDAF in video until firmware 3.0, which was two-and-a-half years AFTER the release of the camera (E-M1 MK II was released in 2016, Firmware 3.0 released June 18, 2019). That also means the firmware was available only AFTER the GH5 had been available for two years and a couple of months.
And I am with you in that I wasn't sure Olympus still even made cameras until I saw that @Dave Maze video, too.
There are a few things that drive me mad with my E-M1 MK II, such as the fact that LOG and Flat Profiles are ONLY available in 24fps DCI (not in 23.978fps, nor in UHD 16:9), and you have to do a bit of menu diving to get in to those picture profiles. On the other hand, for non-log, using the Natural profile with reduced contrast, sharpness and saturation is really nice as long as the dynamic range isn't overwhelming.

I must admit that I have always been confused by their model numbering system.  Something like the Panasonic lines (G, GX, GH) or Sony (Ax, AxR, AxS) or Canon (xD, xxD, xxxD) etc make it easy for people to navigate.  If Olympus had a system in their model numbers, I never saw anything that explained it.
That makes a lot of sense.  I would have been surprised if I was choosing between an Olympus and the GH5 and the Olympus brand ambassador I was talking with just failed to mention the Oly had PDAF!
I do remember that the Olympus was more about getting it right in-camera than the GH5 which had the log profiles and 10-bit, which would allow more flexibility in post.  That definitely matters to me as I shoot travel in available light and really appreciate the flexibility in post that I can get.
Yeah, it definitely smells like a rebrand from some marketing people.  I'd imagine that such a thing would be a pretty standard process - failing brand comes on as a client and you do the normal brainstorming / focus group / market research / graphic design / blah blah blah stuff.

I also use all Godox. I use the Canon version and they worked just fine with the S5. I only use all manual settings though so I do not know if the TTL features work with the S5 and the Canon Godox flashes.
I only use my S5 for video so I only briefly tested the flash functions, but they all worked with my current setup. I have almost every flash Godox makes including the V860's (on camera or off camera wireless flashes), the AD360 (off camera) the AD600 (my favorite and most used flashes for off camera fashion and studio work), and Godox QS 1200's for studio work. I trigger them all with the Godox Xpro-C (Canon version) wireless trigger.
Keep in mind that if you are going all in on Panasonic that the S5 has a builtin wireless flash radio system that I think can control up to 4 flashes natively, so if that's important to you then you may want to look into lumix or Olympus flashes. I have too much invested in Godox to turn back now and I would rather use a hot shoe mounted trigger vs digging through menus when I need to change flash settings, but I know a lot of people probably don't know the S5 has this capability.
I also recommend that for any flash you buy that you verify that it has a wireless receiver, I shoot about 95% off camera and wireless is critical for that.  I do love my V860's though, I can throw them on a light stand and shoot everything from real estate to weddings, then put them on camera when I need to run around a venue at an event.

Olympus as OM Systems has come back from the grave with this so-called ‘wow camera’ and maybe…and I hope it will be, - I want them to succeed.
But if it doesn’t (succeed), they are dead.
My fear with the GH6 is…and I am no tinfoil hat wearer, is that unless it’s a success, it will be the last.
If it is the last, how does that bode for Panasonic’s entire camera division?
The full frame line is hardly selling compared with the likes of Fuji & Nikon, never mind Sony & Canon.
I want Panny to succeed for 2 reasons:
A: I’m invested in the kit. Not so invested I couldn’t get out if I had to, though I’d take a hit.
B: Other than the AF issue, for so many, it could the best system available.
Except their marketing is head in the sand terrible so if the worst happens, they only have themselves to blame.
I like the underdog and will generally support them, if I can, over the bigger players, but in order to do so, they do need to make a product; I need/want, is of a minimum standard/spec and actually make some kind of effort to deserve my commitment.
In terms of kit, Panny/L Mount has been (mostly) achieving that, but as a company beyond that, I don’t care for them as I did previously with Fuji.
Ditto Sigma, I like them, their product and their company ethos. I like it that the head of the family makes launch videos he presents himself.
    I don’t care for Canon’s policies.
Sony to me is just a faceless corporation taking over the World.
    Nikon…are a mystery. I prefer them over the 2 above but I don’t know why…
Perhaps because they have became a bit of an underdog over the last couple of years, mainly in regard to mirrorless?
Ultimately, the bottom line for me is quite simple; “does it do what I want it to do?”
Will either of these new models do something/anything that my current system cannot?
If so, what and is the cost to change worth it?
Well I have few needs/wants beyond what I already have…
    My dream camera is:
1: The S1H shrunk by around 10% in size & weight.
2: Sensor size increased from 24-47mp.
3: Some form of internal ND.
    4: Decent/reliable enough AF tracking.
    5: Full frame 4K 50/60p not cropped S35.
If an SH2 only had 4:, I’d buy it in a heartbeat.
If it had some or any of the rest, bonus.
I hope the reveal of both of these new boys is not a disappointment, even if neither are for me, simply for the sake of the camera industry at a wider level.

For most hybrid shooters, an a7 IV at $2,500 is going to be a lot more appealing than an m43 camera at around $2,500 unless the GH6 is absolutely freakin' bananas.

With a name like OM-1, which is recycled from their 35mm SLR days, you'd think they'd follow their own company's history and produce the smallest full frame camera.
And with the 12bit raw rumor, I was hoping for an internal version, or internal ProRes.
If these specs are accurate, this isn't how you make a splash. I mean, no 4K all-i?!

Assuming the leaked specs are accurate, for video the OM-1 is basically a bit ahead of the (4 year old and half the price!) G9, and that's only if the video quality is significantly better than on the EM-1 iii (like 1080p that's worthy of the name, and somewhat sharper 4k UHD). It's got DCI 4k and All-I 1080p support which the G9 doesn't have.
Versus the cheaper GH5 ii it seems well behind on video specs...
